Teaching engineering and technology subjects involves conveying understanding of abstract information structures and processes such as complex telecommunications protocols, complex mathematical concepts, and data structures. These are multidimensional and can be difficult to grasp quickly. Supported by a Hewlett-Packard (HP) technology for Teaching grant, the School of engineering and technology at National University has embarked on a project to enable students to grasp these complex concepts more quickly and easily, using continuous dialog among students and instructors as the structures are first introduced and then examined from multiple perspectives through real-time interaction among students, small groups, and instructors. HP Wireless Tablet PCs are used to discuss and experiment with diagrams and processes in realtime. This allows combining lectures and problem-solving sessions into a single class session. Our hypothesis is that: 1) an in-depth learning of theory is accomplished, and 2) student engagement is enhanced. Presentation of theory by the instructor is integrated with application while the theory is still in the student's short-term memory. Students no longer have to wait for a separate session such as a recitation session to apply the concepts. This approach often takes less time. In addition to accelerating the learning process, expert instructors find this approach more rewarding as students grasp new concepts more quickly. Analysis of data captured from both students and instructors are presented to support our hypotheses, and our results are compared with similar research carried out by other universities. In addition, the level of interaction enabled by the use of HP Tablets in on-line classes is discussed. The best teaching tools available in existing on-line teaching platforms are compared with the additional tools available in on-site courses when every student has a wireless Tablet PC and specific recommendations are made to on-line teachi

This article provides an overview of dictionary-based methods (DBMs), and reviews recent work in the application of such methods to working with audio and music signals. As Fourier analysis is to additive synthesis, DBMs can be seen as the analytical counterpart to a generalized granular synthesis, where a sound is built by combining heterogeneous atoms selected from a user-defined dictionary. As such, DBMs provide novel ways for analyzing and visualizing audio signals, creating multiresolution descriptions of their contents, and designing sound transformations unique to a description of audio in terms of atoms.

It is proposed in this session that the interactivity necessary in ubiquitous learning can be enhanced by the virtual tutor who mediates between the learner and the e-learning contents. Arousing students' intellectual curiosity and raising their motivation to learn are the two great goals for e-learning contents developers. It is supposed that the interaction in the communication between the teacher and his/her students in a regular classroom can be maintained in e-learning with the help of virtual tutor, which appears on the learning contents in a timely fashion to give learners advice, encouragement, reminders, and such. The session includes discussions to develop such a system making use of the most updated technology as well as demonstrations of such a system which has been experimented at department of Media Informatics. It is proved that the learning environment where human interactivity is essential can be reconstructed in terms of the proposed virtual tutor. This paper presentation includes demonstrations of QED as well as a discussion of the importance of interactivity in ubiquitous e-learning.

Recommendation accuracy is especially important in mobile e-commerce environments due to the limited screen size of mobile devices and relatively expensive connection costs. Mobile content tends to be fashionable and are geared for young users. This paper presents a novel method of building a more accurate recommender system for mobile content in a mobile ecommerce environment. The method is based on collaborative filtering, and models content diffusion and user preference transition and incorporates them in constructing pseudo ratings from implicit feedback data. In a variety of experiments, recommender systems based on the method showed significantly better recommendation accuracy than a pure collaborative filtering-based recommender system.

This paper presents the design and mechatronics implementation of a human stress detection system (HSDS) using a biomechanics approach. A simple, compact and easy to use system is developed and built on a 2-layer PCB. It consists of two transducers, an LCD display and a micro-controller chip along with their respective interfacing circuits. After characterizing the two transducers, an algorithm was developed based on the measurements to classify the human stress condition. A simple classification rule that was adopted revealed that the system can detect 78% of the stressed examinees. The overall system success rate in identifying one of three states (relaxed, half stressed and stressed) was 60%. One major application for HSDS could be in the automotive industry were the driver condition is constantly monitored, and if a stress state is detected, the driver can be notified to stop the car and relax.

Distance learning is a learning style that can overcome the limitation of time and space. Because of the distance, teachers can not handle the student's learning situation, and they do not know whether the student is attentive, drowsy or absent. If teachers can know the student's affective state, they can overcome the difficult. The research applies the image recognition technologies to capture the face images of students when they are learning and analyzes their face features to evaluate the student's affective state by Fuzzy Integral. Finally, teachers can monitor the student's behavior by the detection results on the system interface.

The identification of reliable peripheral biomarkers for clinical diagnosis, patient prognosis, and biological functional studies would allow for access to biological information currently available only through invasive methods. Traditional approaches have so far considered aspects of tissues and biofluid markers independently. Here we introduce an information theoretic framework for biomarker discovery, integrating biofluid and tissue information. This allows us to identify tissue information in peripheral biofluids. We treat tissue-biofluid interactions as an information channel through functional space using 26 proteomes from 45 different sources to determine quantitatively the correspondence of each biofluid for specific tissues via relative entropy calculation of proteomes mapped onto phenotype, function, and drug space. Next, we identify candidate biofluids and biomarkers responsible for functional information transfer (p
