The high cost for information security incident response makes organizations hesitate to possess their own expert security team. Also organizations are still reluctant to share their own security circumstances with external organizations. By the way, they hope experts will help to defend against cyber threats without losing their reputations. To satisfy these requests of organizations, we propose a security coordination model that supports security incidents response in an organizational architecture, in this paper. Besides, our model has cyber forensic functions for collecting digital evidences from real time monitoring and on-site investigation of the incidents and reporting the analysis results to authorized organizations effectively.

Sixty-two years after the first photos of earth taken by a camera aboard a V-2 rocket in October, 1946, and forty-eight years since the first CORONA satellite images were captured, the status of remote sensing research and applications within the African continent has made dramatic progress. Many African countries now have remote sensing research centers, within government agencies, research institutes and universities. Some countries in Africa currently have earth observing and/or telecommunications satellites in orbit and/or have such assets in various planning stages. The authors document such progress, in addition to the constraints to further applications of remote sensing for sustainable development in Africa, with special reference to data distribution constraints. Moreover, the authors address the urgency for bandwidth improvements within the African continent, so as to enable sustainable development initiatives to benefit from advances in high performance computing, required for ab initio near-real-time analysis of satellite-data. Such capabilities, it is argued, are propaedeutic for time-critical initiatives, such as vulnerability assessment, disaster preparedness and mitigation, emergency response, humanitarian assistance and post-calamity reconstruction, associated with a wide array of biogenic and anthropogenic disasters. Case studies of advances in infrastructure for satellite remote sensing and high performance computing, with implications for sustainable development in Africa, are provided from Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa.

A microcontroller based data acquisition system presented is designed for computer engineering students to enhance their knowledge of both microcontrollers and analog circuits, such as A/DC (analog-to-digital conversion), D/AC and integrated-circuit temperature sensors. The system also provides students real-world examples of microcontrollers application and helps students understand how a microcontroller, C language programming, and analog circuits work together to become an embedded system. In addition, it provides a tool for the students to program hardware specific driver codes and to test the system to meet design requirements. The design involves integration of an 8051-based microcontroller, a 12-bit serial A/D converter, an 8-bit D/A converter, an instrumentation operational amplifier, a keypad, and a liquid crystal display. Once the C-language code is compiled, students can download the machine-language code to the system using a PC serial port and do not need any external EPROM burner. The data acquisition system has non-volatile flash memory to hold the code, which allows students to run their code in a stand-alone mode. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

In November 2004 an innovative undergraduate computer engineering technology program based on TAC of ABET program assessment criteria was granted licensure by the State department of Higher Education. The University has considerable experience with accreditation and associated assessment activities, most recently reporting on an "Incommon Methodology for Objective- and Outcome-based programs Assessment" (Lema, L.F., Baumann, P.F., and Prusak, Z., ASEE 2005 Annual Conference) across three engineering technology programs. This study reports an assessment component within the computer engineering technology program in accordance with ABET accreditation criteria. The implementation process was conducted in an undergraduate course in the program. The initial phase involves identification of course goals, and based on these goals, the measurable learning outcomes are formulated. Using web-based methodology and course management tools such as WebCT or Vista, the learning outcomes are measured in the form of pre- and post-course survey data from students. Data can be imported to data management tools such as Excel for analysis and evaluation. This study uses computer programs as tools to facilitate data collection and data analysis, making the data intensive portion of the assessment and evaluation process an easier endeavor. Applicability towards the assessment efforts of other engineering technology programs is also addressed. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

The authors investigate the characteristics and performance of joint (single‐step) and sequential (two‐step) approaches to creating sparse and structured multiresolution representations of audio and music signals derived using sparse overcomplete methods. A joint approach, such as molecular matching pursuit, attempts to find structures in a signal as part of the decomposition process, while a sequential approach, such as agglomerative clustering, attempts to find structures in the completed decomposition of a signal. Each of these approaches have different benefits and drawbacks. For a joint approach, it is computationally convenient that the decomposition and structuring are done simultaneously, but usually only simple structural relations are possible. For a sequential approach, one is working in a parameter space of much smaller dimension than the original signal, but the computation is higher since the decomposition and the structure building are two separate processes. Results from these approaches using real audio and music signals will be compared and contrasted, and will contribute to our goal of creating an enhanced interface between the content of audio and music signals, e.g., onsets, notes, voices, and their multiresolution sparse atomic decompositions.

Faculty members from Georgia Tech's School of Electrical and computer engineering (ECE) have worked jointly with engineers from National Instruments (NI) to develop a new freshman engineering course. This course is entitled 'Introduction to ECE Design' and is constructed around the use of the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT robotics system. NI partnered with LEGO to jointly develop the programming software for the MINDSTORMS NXT, and their engineers are uniquely positioned to provide insight into the use and functionality of these kits. NI engineers have not only provided technical support but have also conceived and designed most of the laboratories for the course. This course addresses the diverse objectives of providing students with a systems-level design experience at the beginning of their academic programs and introducing them to a broad range of ECE disciplines. A primary goal is to enable students to make better-informed decisions when choosing whether or not to major in electrical engineering or computer engineering. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

The Information Age has revolutionized the way students learn in the classroom. The United States Military Academy (USMA) emphasizes the importance of Information technology (IT) through an academy-wide IT specific goal. This goal supports the USMA's mission of producing Army Officers who can respond effectively to technological changes in the defense of our nation. Courses augmented with IT can be daunting for cadets who lack the experience and confidence level to succeed in the course. As a result, these types of courses are avoided by cadets if at all possible. This is not an option for an aspiring officer who will lead the soldiers of tomorrow on a digitized battlefield. Since 1990, cadets have been issued a computer which has played a central role in bringing the power of IT to all graduates of the Military Academy. Integration of IT in the curriculum begins early with every cadet receiving a laptop computer. An integrated software package is included to support any course of instruction. Cadets receive two courses in IT, one in their freshman year and one in their junior year. The freshman course teaches the cadet the basic functionality of the laptop, a basic programming language, and creating a basic website. The junior course builds on the freshman course by teaching the cadets to create an advanced website, design and build a network, manage a database, and create an information system. IT plays a central role in several overlap courses between engineering and the humanities in such areas as information warfare, terrorism, and the legal aspects of intellectual property rights. What makes this approach unique is the methodical diffusion of IT into course design which removes the barrier between learning and the implementation of IT as an academic multiplier. An academy-wide committee consisting of 12 members is responsible for examining collected data to see how well the Military Academy is meeting its LT goal. A university that develops a program with the capability to launch, chase, and recover helium-filled high-altitude balloon satellites (BalloonSats) enables a number of undergraduate research possibilities. The program faculty and the undergraduates served can also form the engine of an exciting and effective vehicle to perform K-12 outreach related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Nearly identical to weather balloons, low-weight BalloonSats can affordably carry student experiments literally to the edge of space. When the outreach effort is extended and a partnership between the university program and a K-12 classroom forms, the outreach can be transformed from a series of "fire and forget" activities into a genuine, standards-based, educational component. This paper describes the collaboration between Oregon Institute of technology's (OIT's) BalloonSat program (LaunchOIT) and Ferguson Elementary School in Klamath Falls, Oregon (Ferguson School). LaunchOIT is an affiliate of Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium's1(OSGCs) "LaunchOregon" BalloonSat program. The paper presents some history relating to LaunchOIT, the enabling underpinnings of the OSGC, the OIT-Ferguson School collaboration structure (including some data related to student participants and performance), the benefits of the program collaboration, and how the program looks to sustain itself, particularly considering the auspices of NASA's educational mission as exercised through the National Space Grant College and Fellowship program2(Space Grant) efforts. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.
