In this work, the mobility degradation after gate AC stress in the off region are examined. It is discovered that the mobility increases after AC gate stress condition 0 V to +15 V, which the previously reported model (by Uraoka, Y) may not explain. Considering the spatial distribution of the voltage and the flow of the carriers in the channel, we proposed the "slicing model" , that is, replace the original TFT by ten TFTs with shorter channel length. Then, by applying the circuit simulator, the voltage distribution in the channel under different stages of gate applied voltage may be obtained. An index considering the current flow and the channel voltage at the edge nodes are proposed to describe the degradation in mobility. The fair linearity between the proposed index and the degradation in mobility reveals the validity of the proposed model.

It is important for students getting suitable feedback information when either they are doing or completing a learning activity. This research tries to know what kind of feedback message is really useful to students. For this purpose, this paper develops a workable e-learning environment with feedback mechanism to gather the learning effects of students with different kinds of feedbacks. The experiment involves five fifth-grade classes and divides five classes into three different groups. The students in the control group have no feedback and students in the other two groups have different kinds of feedback messages. The analysis of experiment data contains two parts: the first one evaluates the feedback efficiencies for all groups;and, then all students will be separated into three clusters based on their academic achievement in order to do further analysis.

This paper presents the results of an extensive research study to develop a national model for an undergraduate curriculum in Industrial engineering. A departmental reform strategy was developed and applied to reengineer the IE curriculum. The reform strategy began with identifying the voice of the customer, including both industry and academic institutions which employ or enroll IE students after they graduate with their IE undergraduate degree. The emerging topics and desired characteristics of undergraduate IE graduates were identified in an earlier research study. These emerging topics were used in a focus group to identify high-level knowledge clusters of information that future IE graduates would need to master based on possible future work scenarios. The emerging topics were mapped to the high level knowledge clusters to generate curriculum requirements of future progress. This research effort developed a revised IE curriculum that can be used as a national model for IE departments. This curriculum focuses on nontraditional industry sectors, incorporating enhanced instructional strategies that can improve learning and retention, as well as state-of-the art technologies that support these strategies. The national model also includes material to help engineers gain knowledge that will help to prepare them for roles of leadership and management in their careers, as well as provides for recruiting strategies to increase the numbers of underrepresented minorities and women in IE programs. This paper describes the approach used in this research effort to develop the national model, as well as details of the resulting model for undergraduate IE curriculum. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

The accumulation of genomic and proteomic data of many organisms presents an opportunity to analyze entire phylogenetic trees in a systematic, quantified manner. The universal tree of life, constructed by genomic data, provides an evolutionary context for proteomic data of individual organisms. Using proteomic information mapped to biological functions, we survey the tree of life for evolutionary trends, where trends are low p-value linear regressions of relative protein diversity against an evolutionary timeline. These trends provide quantified perspectives across evolution that would be otherwise difficult to discern from the large amount of available bioinformatic data. We analyzed 22,762 functions across 167 proteomes for approximately 3.8 million information content calculations. Of particular interest is the rise of protein-protein interactions along the path of mammalian evolution. Of general interest are the numerous uncovered trends that open the door to future queries of focused scope. ©2007 IEEE.

The department of technology Systems (TSYS) at East Carolina University has implemented a new faculty mentoring process to enable junior faculty members to learn from senior faculty members as they prepare for a career in academia. Five tenured professors and associate professors in the TSYS department have recently established a new process to mentor faculty members within the department who have begun not yet completed their initial tenure process at a major university. This process includes a series of workshops regarding academic performance expectations during the early stages of an academic career. Our commitment to new faculty takes on several related, yet distinct features. Examples of these initiatives include: 1) reduced workloads for new faculty for the first two years to enable them to generate individual and collaborative research activities, funded grants, and publications, 2) periodic university-wide training to learn policies and procedures that affect day-to-day activities on a college campus, 3) periodic workshops hosted by senior faculty mentors, and 4) one-on-one discussions between senior faculty members and junior faculty members to encourage candid dialogue between professional colleagues. Another feature of the mentorship philosophy is a proposal to the dean of the college to offer newly hired faculty a contractual start date of July 1steach year instead of starting their contract one week prior to the start of fall classes, normally in late August. This additional period of time will be used to train new faculty in essential policies and procedures, to complete a variety of administrative tasks on campus, to get a head start on preparing for classes in the fall, and cleaning up those supplemental tasks that accompany every move to a new location. With myriad information being generated from high-throughput experiments such as microarrays and sequencing technologies, an ever-increasing amount of data is being recorded and analyzed with the help of hierarchical ontologies, such as the Gene Ontology (GO). We have developed a novel framework-based on the well established foundations of information theory - that allows for the evaluation of new types of hypotheses. The framework, encapsulated in Open Biomedical Ontology-Based Exploration and Search (OBOES), has already been applied in the investigation of different kinds of questions. The resulting framework enables the new field of information theoretic ontology-based analysis. We have applied this framework to create methods to re-engineer ontologies, explore fundamental questions on the evolution of biological complexity, determine optimal ontology terms for bioinformatics analysis, and quantify the usefulness of biofluids as proxies for tissues/diseases. In each case, we found that our methods provide novel, significant findings. An open source Java implementation of OBOES is available at: http://***. net.

There is a clinical need for HIV protease inhibitors that can evade resistance mutations. One possible approach to designing such inhibitors relies upon the crystallographic observation that the substrates of HIV protease occupy a rather constant region within the binding site. In particular, it has been hypothesized that inhibitors which lie within this region will tend to resist clinically relevant mutations. The present study offers the first prospective evaluation of this hypothesis, via computational design of inhibitors predicted to conform to the substrate envelope, followed by synthesis and evaluation against wild-type and mutant proteases, as well as structural studies of complexes of the designed inhibitors with HIV protease. The results support the utility of the substrate envelope hypothesis as a guide to the design of robust protease inhibitors.

Mobile Learning makes students get the advantages of both traditional learning and e-learning. How to give students learning sequence suggestions in the mobile learning environment is a big issue and is also the goal of this paper. This research uses knowledge map to store the characteristics of each learning object and designs a situated map to represent spatial knowledge in the mobile learning environment. By using these two knowledge structures, knowledge map and situated map, the system created by this research can generate various navigation sentences and ask students to observe the characteristics of learning objects. This research also takes information theory into consideration in order to decide which navigation sentence should deliver to the student first. The system calculates the entropy for each generated sentence and finds the most appropriate one to deliver to the student. At the end of this paper, an experiment system is implemented for the 5th year biology course, Plant Observation.

With the human genome sequenced, attention has been shifting to proteins and their function. Several technologies including mass spectrometry and gel electrophoresis have traditionally been used to study proteins. These technologies rely on proteins' masses to characterize and/or identify them. Once identified, the discovered proteins' are often analyzed for their functional relevance. In this paper, we present an alternative approach to studying protein function directly, based on protein mass. By analyzing proteins with similar mass ranges (bins), we discovered that certain biological functions are associated with specific mass bins more frequently than would be expected by chance. Biological functional classes found in this manner could be seen across the three examined organisms: human, worm and fly. We found no sequence-based homology across significant mass-function proteins in the three different organisms. This investigation leads to useful property that the mass-based biological functional classes are preserved across the organisms. Thus, this paper describes a potential constraint for evolution of similar function based on mass constraints. Finally, this work yields a roadmap for experimental design for functional exploration of proteomes in mass-based technologies such as gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry. ©2007 IEEE.

Recent work in blind source separation applied to anechoic mixtures of speech allows for improved reconstruction of sources that rarely overlap in a time-frequency representation. While the assumption that speech mixtures do not overlap significantly in time-frequency is reasonable, music mixtures rarely meet this constraint, requiring new approaches. We introduce a method that uses spatial cues from anechoic, stereo music recordings and assumptions regarding the structure of musical source signals to effectively separate mixtures of tonal music. We discuss existing techniques to create partial source signal estimates from regions of the mixture where source signals do not overlap significantly. We use these partial signals within a new demixing framework, in which we estimate harmonic masks for each source, allowing the determination of the number of active sources in important time-frequency frames of the mixture. We then propose a method for distributing energy from time-frequency frames of the mixture to multiple source signals. This allows dealing with mixtures that contain time-frequency frames in which multiple harmonic sources are active without requiring knowledge of source characteristics.
