The neural networks are successfully applied to many applications in different domains. However, due to the results made by the neural networks are difficult to explain the decision process of neural networks is supposed as a black box. The explanation of reasoning is important to some applications such like credit approval application and medical diagnosing software. Therefore, the rule extraction algorithm is becoming more and more important in explaining the extracted rules from the neural networks. In this paper, a decompositional algorithm is analyzed and designed to extract rules from neural networks. The algorithm is simple but efficient;can reduce the extracted rules but improve the efficiency of the algorithm at the same time. Moreover, the algorithm is compared to the other two algorithms, M-of-N and Garcez, by solving the MONK's problem. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

The steady national decline in women engineering students persists despite a plethora of programs and camps at engineering colleges around the country aimed at attracting girls into engineering and technical fields.1Discussions about this decline often suggest that influential cultural, media and marketing images may affect girls' career choices in ways that steer girls in directions other than engineering. When planning the first-ever overnight engineering camp for high school girls hosted at Boise State University, the planning team decided to embrace marketing methods to create realistic images about engineering that are relevant to the lives of girls. The planning team represented a partnership among Micron technology, the southwest Idaho Society of Women Engineers section, Boise public school staff, and Boise State University faculty, staff and graduate students. The team defined four messages that formed the foundation for curriculum development and communications with prospective participants: 1) Engineers help the world;2) Engineers think creatively;3) Engineers enjoy working with other people;and 4) Engineers earn a good living. Demand for the "e-Girls" camp far exceeded expectations, and student evaluations at the end of the program indicated success at affecting the girls' understanding, perceptions and interest about engineering careers. The program will continue in 2006. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

The research field of Intelligent Service Robots, which has become more and more popular over the last years, covers a wide range of applications from climbing machines for cleaning large storefronts to robotic assistance for disabled or elderly people. When developing service robot software, it is a challenging problem to design the robot architecture by carefully considering user needs and requirements, implement robot application components based on the architecture, and integrate these components in a systematic and comprehensive way for maintainability and reusability. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult to communicate among development teams and with others when many engineers from different teams participate in developing the service robot. To solve these problems, we applied the COMET design method, which uses the industry-standard UML notation, to developing the software of an intelligent service robot for the elderly, called T-Rot, under development at Center for Intelligent Robotics (CIR). In this paper, we discuss our experiences with the project in which we successfully addressed these problems and developed the autonomous navigation system of the robot with the COMET/UML method. The Wireless Integrated MicroSystems (WIMS) engineering Research Center (ERC) has developed a broad comprehensive MEMS and microsystem curriculum suitable for upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, and industry professionals. Five core courses were in the initial curriculum design. The design had flexibility that invited development of other core courses, as well as related technical electives and breadth electives. The core courses provide instruction in MEMS, Microsystems, major design and laboratory measurements, and societal impact. The course enrollments have been strong. A master of engineering in integrated microsystems degree program was developed so that industry professionals would have a focused set of coursework, while providing flexibility that would permit custom tailoring of the total course package to serve specific needs. Distance education dissemination of the courses as whole courses, or as discrete portions of course materials, was intended to be available;that goal has been realized. The core courses originate at the University of Michigan (UM), and have been distributed to Michigan State University (MSU), Michigan Technological University (MTU), Howard University (HU), University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez (UPRM), and Western Michigan University (WMU). Rochester Institute of technology (RIT) has used materials from the UM core courses in its offerings. Other institutions that have used the course web-streaming video and course materials are University of Lille, Darmstadt University, and Middle East Technical University. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

Teachers always want to know how much their students had learned in classes. The most convenient way to discover learning status is `test'. Each item on a test sheet always contains one or more concepts used to check whether a student really understands or not. Teachers can also find a student's misconceptions out via the concept relations stored in a test sheet. In order to make the diagnosis process simple, teachers always take concept maps as their test development and learning diagnosis tools. This paper implements a SCORM/IMS compliance online test and diagnosis system base on concept maps. In the system, it has more than 5000 members and generates real-time learning report for misconception diagnosis over 500 times monthly. The members are the third-year student at junior high school and come from different counties and cities all over the country. Currently, the system covers 11 courses such as Chinese, English, Physics, History, and Earth Science. It's obviously the system is useful for both teachers and students

Mobile path loss prediction model for forest areas using MIMO fuzzy logic system

This paper proposes a method to predic mobile path loss in forests using MIMO fuzzy logic system. The multi-input was classified into seven input parameters defined as, X1 is number of trees/m2 and X2 to X7 are tree structure parameters. These crisp inputs are classified by fuzzifier to fuzzy sets and then inferenced using fuzzy linguistic rule base into multi - output path loss slopes via de-fuzzifier. For this study, we classified the terrains into high-, medium-, low- density and grass area and used the simple linguistic rules for prediction the path loss slopes. We performed measurements in different forest densities at a frequency of 1.8 GHz with base station antenna height in a range of 3, 4, and 5 m above ground while the receiving antenna height was fixed at 1.8 m above ground. The results have shown that fuzzy logic approach provides more accurate prediction of path loss slopes than that of conventional empirical mathematic model. The proposed models will be useful for the local wireless network and micro-cell design of mobile communication systems in forests.

Liquid crystals (LC) have many applications in optics. Many electro-optical devices, like LC spatial light modulators (SLMs), take advantage of electrically controllable birefringence in LCs. LC SLMs are amazingly flexible devices for controlling the phase and amplitude of light. Consequently, LC SLMs are being used for such techniques as wavefront sensing, emulating atmospheric turbulence, wavefront correction, beam steering, and holography. These techniques are often used in aerospace applications like laser weapons, free-space optical communications, satellite tracking, and satellite imagery.
