- Abstract-Transport data with dynamic spatial-temporal dependencies elevates transportation flow forecasting to a significant issue for operational planning, managing passenger flow, and arranging for individual travel in a smart city. The task is challenging due to the composite spatial dependency on transportation networks and the non-linear temporal dynamics with mobility conditions changing over time. To address these challenges, we propose a Spatial- Temporal Graph Convolutional Recurrent Network that learns from both the spatial stations network data and time-series of historical mobility changes so as to predict urban metro flow at a future time. The model is based on Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) in order to further improve the estimation accuracy. Extensive experiments on a real-world dataset of Hangzhou metro system prove the effectiveness of the proposed model. © 2023 IEEE.

Art galleries play a vital role in preserving and promoting artistic heritage, but the current state of art galleries in Indonesia, particularly in attracting the younger generation, raises concerns. The general public, especially the younger generation, has shown the lack of interest in visiting art galleries, particularly in Indonesia. In light of these challenges, it becomes imperative to explore alternative approaches to engage the younger generation in the realm of art. Developing a virtual gallery platform that offers immersive and interactive experiences can help bridge the gap between the digital preferences of the younger generation and the traditional art world. By leveraging technology, this platform can provide a convenient and accessible medium for the younger generation to explore, appreciate, and interact with art, that can trigger their interest in the artistic heritage of Indonesia. This research explores the current state of art galleries in Indonesia and highlights the lack of interest among the younger generation in visiting physical art galleries. To counter this trend, a virtual gallery platform is developed to engage the younger generation and stimulate their interest in art. The platform offers an immersive experience, replicating the gallery environment virtually. Through software testing and initial user testing, the platform's performance and usability are evaluated. The findings present the potential of this platform in revitalizing the younger generation's interest in art. This web-based platform provides accessibility and convenience, allowing users to explore and appreciate art from anywhere. © 2023 IEEE.

QuarantivityVR: Supporting Self-Embodiment for Non-HMD Users in Asymmetric Social VR Games

The prevalence of immersive head-mounted display (HMD) social virtual reality (VR) applications introduced asymmetric interaction among users within the virtual environment (VE). Therefore, researchers opted for (1) exploring the asymmetric social VR interaction dynamics in only co-located setups, (2) assigning interdependent roles to both HMD and non-HMD users, and (3) representing non-HMD users as abstract avatars in the VE. Therefore, we investigate the feasibility of supporting Self-Embodiment in an asymmetric VR interaction mode in a remote setup. To this end, we designed an asymmetric social VR game, QuarantivityVR, to (1) support sense of self-embodiment for non-HMD users in a remote setting by representing them as realistic full-body avatars within the VE, (2) augment visual-motor synchrony for the non-HMD users to increase their sense of agency and presence by detecting their motion through Kinect sensor and laptop's webcam. During the game, each player performs three activities in succession, namely movie-guessing, spelling-bee, and answering mathematical questions. We believe that our work will act as a step towards the inclusion of a wide spectrum of users that can not afford full immersion and will aid researchers in creating enjoyable interactions for both users in the physical and virtual spaces. © 2022 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.

The growing elderly population and the increasing demand for nursing home care have led to a need to improve the quality of life for residents. A popular solution is developing a companion robot to assist residents with various tasks and provide human-like interaction. In this paper, we present the prototype of a companion robot currently website-based, equipped with a Dual Intent Entity Transformer to understand what the user wants. The results of the study show the prototype is capable of classifying user messages according to their appropriate intent with precision, recall, F-score, and accuracy on average 91 %, 91 %, 90%, and 87% respectively using privately owned dataset. Future works such as expanding the robot's insight and tuning the model would improve the service provided by the companion robot. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper aims to improve Llama 2’s performance by using personalized and modified datasets. Despite the impressive capabilities of large language models (LLMs) such as Llama 2, their effectiveness may be limited in specialized domains. The proposed method entails fine-tuning Llama 2 on custom datasets to optimize performance efficiently. The study focuses on the impact of quantization-aware low-rank adapter layers (QLoRA) on a single GPU’s resource-efficient fine-tuning performance. Furthermore, the study looks into the design of instruction datasets to guide the model toward desired behaviors. When Llama 2 is fine-tuned with QLoRA, performance improves significantly across tasks such as text summarization, question answering, and natural language generation in a variety of domains. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) play a crucial role in various domains, from commercial to military, enabling precise monitoring of environmental and other conditions. However, the transmission of sensitive data in WSNs poses security challenges, particularly concerning eavesdropping attacks. While cryptographic methods offer protection, they often incur high energy costs, making them impractical for battery-powered WSNs. Our problem formulation, based on graph theory, reduces to the Secluded Paths problem for which no polynomial solution yet to known. Motivated by the challenge of reducing the eavesdropping risk through intelligent routing, we propose a scalable optimization approach using heuristics and local search techniques. We present a solution framework, followed by an experimental evaluation to demonstrate its efficacy. This paper contributes to the advancement of secure and efficient data transmission in WSNs. © 2024 ACM.

Acquired medical images often contain noise due to various factors that affect image quality. The noisy image indicates the presence of inappropriate information or loss of original information due to changes in the pixel values. For diagnosis purposes, the acquired or noisy medical image needs to be reconstructed to obtain an enhanced image or denoised image for a better decision. One of the techniques to enhance or reduce the noise can be performed by normalized convolution to interpolate the change of pixels in the original image. This paper is presented to investigate the feasibility of the normalized convolution filter to enhance and reduce medical image noise. The study was performed through experiments using several types of medical images, namely Brain MRI, Breast Ultrasound, Chest X-ray, Retinal OCT, Mammogram, and RSNA Bone Age images. Experimental results show that the normalized convolution could produce an enhanced image with sharper contrast. In the image enhancement, the enhanced image obtained by this filter achieves 41.12 dB on the PSNR average. In the medical image denoising, the normalized convolution could produce better visual quality to reduce the Gaussian, Salt & Pepper, Poisson, and Speckle with PSNR averages are 28.43dB, 32.82dB, 32.49dB, and 29.30dB. This method also outperforms basic image denoising filters, such as Imbox, Wiener, and Median Filterings. Hence, this filter could be used as an alternative for medical image preprocessing, such as image enhancement and noise reduction. © 2023 IEEE.

Facial expressions are a vital component of human communication, conveying emotional information that enhances the social experience. However, for individuals with visual impairments, perceiving and interpreting facial expressions can be challenging, hindering their ability to engage fully in social interactions. This paper presents an enhanced facial emotion recognition system specifically designed to aid visually impaired individuals. Two enhanced approaches for facial emotion recognition systems are proposed. The first approach consolidates negative emotions (anger, fear, sadness, disgust) into a single class, while the second approach incorporates diverse training datasets from real-world environments. The negative emotion consolidation approach achieved 90.9% and 94.7% accuracy on the FER2013 and CK+ datasets, respectively. While, the diverse dataset integration approach achieved 84.9% and 70.6% accuracy on FER2013 and CK+ datasets, respectively. This is a significant improvement when benchmarked with other approaches available in the literature. The feasibility of the enhanced proposed systems as assistive technology for the visually impaired indicated its ability to be applied in real-world applications. © 2024 IEEE.

We consider random simple temporal graphs in which every edge of the complete graph Kn appears once within the time interval [0, 1] independently and uniformly at random. Our main result is a sharp threshold on the size of any maximum δ-clique (namely a clique with edges appearing at most δ apart within [0, 1]) in random instances of this model, for any constant δ. In particular, using the probabilistic method, we prove that the size of a maximum δ-clique is approximately 2lognlog1δ with high probability (whp). We note that, even though the random simple temporal graph contains Θ(n2) overlapping δ-windows, which (when viewed separately) correspond to different random instances of the Erdős-Rényi random graphs model, the size of the maximum δ-clique in the former model and the maximum clique size of the latter are approximately the same. Furthermore, we show that the minimum interval containing a δ-clique is δ-o(δ) whp. We use this result to show that any polynomial time algorithm for δ-Temporal Clique is unlikely to have very large probability of success. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
