Graph Auto-Encoders (GAEs) are powerful tools for graph representation learning. In this paper, we develop a novel Hierarchical Cluster-based GAE (HC-GAE), that can learn effective structural characteristics for graph data analysis. To this end, during the encoding process, we commence by utilizing the hard node assignment to decompose a sample graph into a family of separated subgraphs. We compress each subgraph into a coarsened node, transforming the original graph into a coarsened graph. On the other hand, during the decoding process, we adopt the soft node assignment to reconstruct the original graph structure by expanding the coarsened nodes. By hierarchically performing the above compressing procedure during the decoding process as well as the expanding procedure during the decoding process, the proposed HC-GAE can effectively extract bidirectionally hierarchical structural features of the original sample graph. Furthermore, we re-design the loss function that can integrate the information from either the encoder or the decoder. Since the associated graph convolution operation of the proposed HC-GAE is restricted in each individual separated subgraph and cannot propagate the node information between different subgraphs, the proposed HC-GAE can significantly reduce the over-smoothing problem arising in the classical convolution-based GAEs. The proposed HC-GAE can generate effective representations for either node classification or graph classification, and the experiments demonstrate the effectiveness on real-world datasets. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. This paper presents a practical approach to cache eviction algorithm design, called Mobius, that optimizes the concurrent throughput of caches and reduces cache operation latency by utilizing lock-free data structures, while maintaining high cache hit ratios. Mobius includes two key designs. First, Mobius employs two lock-free FIFO queues to manage cache items, ensuring that all cache operations are executed efficiently in concurrency. Second, Mobius integrates a consecutive detection mechanism that merges multiple modifications during eviction into a single operation, thereby reducing data races. The implementation of Mobius in CacheLib and RocksDB highlights its high concurrency in both synthetic and real-world workloads.

Intelligent supply line surveillance is critical for modern smart grids. Smart sensors and gateway nodes are strategically deployed along supply lines to achieve intelligent surveillance. They collect data continuously and transmit it to the control centre in real-time. It enables real-time monitoring, fault detection, and efficient energy management across distribution networks. This advanced surveillance system ensures continuous monitoring of supply lines, detecting anomalies, and optimizing operations to maintain the stability and reliability of the smart grid. However, the reliance of all participating nodes on public communication channels to transmit supply line surveillance data exposes these systems to critical cyber attacks. These cyber attacks include impersonation, physical tampering, ephemeral secret leakage, and desynchronization attacks. To address these issues, existing key-exchange protocols often fail to ensure robust security while imposing high computation and communication overheads, limiting their practicality for resource-constrained environments. Therefore, we propose a secure and efficient key exchange and tamper-resistant authentication protocol using Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) and Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs). The PUF mechanism provides robust resistance against physical tampering and cloning attacks, ensuring enhanced physical security for supply line devices. We validate the security robustness of the devised protocol using the Random or Real (ROR) model. Furthermore, informal security analysis demonstrates the protocol's robustness in rigorously resisting various attacks, including physical tampering, impersonation, ephemeral secret leakage and desynchronization. Moreover, we determine the performance evaluation that reveals the protocol's superior efficiency compared to competing protocols, achieving significant reductions of 28.64% in computation overhead and 9.96% in communication overhead. © 2014 IEEE.

Region-aware Image-based Human Action Retrieval with Transformers

Human action understanding is a fundamental and challenging task in computer vision. Although there exists tremendous research on this area, most works focus on action recognition, while action retrieval has received less attention. In this paper, we focus on the neglected but important task of image-based action retrieval which aims to find images that depict the same action as a query image. We establish benchmarks for this task and set up important baseline methods for fair comparison. We present an end-to-end model that learns rich action representations from three aspects: the anchored person, contextual regions, and the global image. A novel fusion transformer module is designed to model the relationships among different features and effectively fuses them into an action representation. Experiments on the Stanford-40 and PASCAL VOC 2012 Action datasets show that the proposed method significantly outperforms previous approaches for image-based action retrieval. © 2024, CC BY.

Integrating Experimental and Machine Learning Approaches for Predictive Analysis of Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Using Cu/G-C3n4

This study addresses environmental issues like global warming and wastewater generation by exploring waste-to-energy strategies that produce renewable hydrogen and treat wastewater simultaneously. Cu/g-C3N4 is used to evolve hydrogen from sucrose solution and the impact of reaction parameters such as pH (3, 5, and 7), Cu loading (5, 10, and 15 wt%), catalyst amount (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 g/L), and oxidant (H2O2) concentration (0, 10, and 20 mM) on the evolved hydrogen amount is examined. Characterization study confirmed successful incorporation of Cu without significantly altering g-C3N4 properties. The highest hydrogen production (1979.25 μmol·g–1·h–1) is achieved with 0.3 g/L catalyst, 20 mM H2O2, 5% Cu loading, pH 3. The experimental study concludes that Cu/g-C3N4 is effective photocatalyst for renewable hydrogen production. In addition to the experimental investigations, various machine learning (ML) models, including Random Forest, Decision Tree, XGBoost, among others, are employed to analyze the impact of reaction parameters and forecast the quantities of produced hydrogen. Alongside these individual models, an ensemble approach is proposed and utilized. The R2 values of these ML models ranged from 0.9454 to 0.9955, indicating strong predictive performance across the board. Additionally, these models exhibited low error rates, further confirming their reliability in predicting hydrogen evolution. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Peptides are gaining significant attention in diverse fields such as the pharmaceutical market has seen a steady rise in peptide-based therapeutics over the past six decades. Peptides have been utilized in the development of distinct applications including inhibitors of SARS-COV-2 and treatments for conditions like cancer and diabetes. Distinct types of peptides possess unique characteristics, and development of peptide-specific applications require the discrimination of one peptide type from others. To the best of our knowledge, approximately 230 Artificial Intelligence (ai) driven applications have been developed for 22 distinct types of peptides, yet there remains significant room for development of new predictors. A Comprehensive review addresses the critical gap by providing a consolidated platform for the development of ai-driven peptide classification applications. This paper offers several key contributions, including presenting the biological foundations of 22 unique peptide types and categorizes them into four main classes: Regulatory, Therapeutic, Nutritional, and Delivery Peptides. It offers an in-depth overview of 47 databases that have been used to develop peptide classification benchmark datasets. It summarizes details of 288 benchmark datasets that are used in development of diverse types ai-driven peptide classification applications. It provides a detailed summary of 197 sequence representation learning methods and 94 classifiers that have been used to develop 230 distinct ai-driven peptide classification applications. Across 22 distinct types peptide classification tasks related to 288 benchmark datasets, it demonstrates performance values of 230 ai-driven peptide classification applications. In a heterogeneous wireless environment, there are many different radio access technologies (RATs), such as Wi-Fi and 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G, which each have a different degree of coverage and processing power to meet various service requirements. A mobile user may have access to various access networks in such a situation. On the PC of each user, numerous programs with varied Quality of Service (QoS) requirements can operate simultaneously. It would be advantageous for a multi-interface terminal to use two or more interfaces simultaneously in order to improve performance. However, using multiple networks at once could use up more energy than just using one interface. Therefore, energy use must to be taken into account when analyzing the Flow/Interface Relationship (FIA). This paper presents a novel method for choosing the ideal FIA that achieves the best trade-off between all the characteristics taken into account, dubbed Smart Tabu Search (STS). STS considers user preferences, network circumstances, network expenses, application QoS specifications, and battery life of mobile devices. We use simulations and testbed experiments to validate our concept. Professionals are now able to diagnose and monitor patients remotely because to the growing use of healthcare monitoring devices. One of the most frequent occurrences that affects the reliability of information transmission in any network is congestion, which is defined as the unchecked increase in traffic relative to network capacity. With the use of a mesh network, wireless sensors, and some of the most significant models for vital signs, the article aims to provide a realistic simulation environment for a healthcare system. The simulator environment is a helpful tool for assessing the dependability and effectiveness of the healthcare system in a realistic setting. Internet of Things (IoT) devices are crucial components in e-healthcare networks. It enables remote patient health monitoring and facilitates seamless communication among medical sensors, wearable devices, and healthcare providers through public communication channels. Despite these advantages, the use of public communication among medical sensors in e-healthcare networks introduces critical challenges, such as vulnerability to impersonation, physical capture, and ephemeral secret leakage, particularly in resource-constrained environments. In recent years, various access control protocols have been developed to mitigate these risks. However, these protocols often fail to ensure robust security while incurring significant communication and computation overhead. To overcome these limitations, we propose a lightweight and robust access control protocol for IoT-based e-healthcare networks using chaotic maps. We propose a novel protocol that integrates a PUF-based mechanism to mitigate the challenges of physical tampering and cloning attacks in e-healthcare networks. It leverages the inherent uniqueness of PUF and enhances security through the high-entropy properties of chaotic maps. We analyze the proposed protocol informally, which confirms that it significantly bolsters efficiency and security. We also validate the security using the Random or Real (RoR) model. Moreover, we verify the security of the proposed protocol using Scyther. These analyses highlight that the proposed protocol offers robust resistance to numerous attacks, such as impersonation, physical capture, and ephemeral secret leakage. Moreover, we also compare it with existing and relevant protocols. The comparative analysis showcases its superior performance. Notably, the proposed authentication protocol significantly reduces 46.84% computational overhead and decreases 31.30% communication overhead, underscoring its enhanced performance and resource efficiency. © 2002-2012 IEEE.
