A search is conducted for the electroweak pair production of a chargino and a neutralino pp→χ˜1±χ˜20, where the chargino decays into the lightest neutralino and a W boson, χ˜1±→χ˜10W±, while the neutralino decays into the lightest neutralino and a Standard Model-like 125 GeV Higgs boson, χ˜20→χ˜10h. Fully hadronic, semileptonic, diphoton, and multilepton (electrons, muons) final states with missing transverse momentum are considered in this search. Higgs bosons in the final state are identified by either two jets originating from bottom quarks (h→bb¯), two photons (h→γγ), or leptons from the decay modes h→WW, h→ZZ or h→ττ. The analysis is based on 36.1 fb−1 of s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Observations are consistent with the Standard Model expectations, and 95% confidence-level limits of up to 680 GeV in χ˜1±/χ˜20 mass are set in the context of a simplified supersymmetric model.

A search for new particles decaying into a pair of top quarks is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. Events consistent with top-quark pair production and the fully hadronic decay mode of the top quarks are selected by requiring multiple high transverse momentum jets including those containing b-hadrons. Two analysis techniques, exploiting dedicated top-quark pair reconstruction in different kinematic regimes, are used to optimize the search sensitivity to new hypothetical particles over a wide mass range. The invariant mass distribution of the two reconstructed top-quark candidates is examined for resonant production of new particles with various spins and decay widths. No significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed and limits are set on the production cross-section times branching fraction for new hypothetical Z′ bosons, dark-matter mediators, Kaluza-Klein gravitons and Kaluza-Klein gluons. By comparing with the predicted production cross sections, the Z′ boson in the topcolor-assisted-technicolor model is excluded for masses up to 3.1–3.6 TeV, the dark-matter mediators in a simplified framework are excluded in the mass ranges from 0.8 to 0.9 TeV and from 2.0 to 2.2 TeV, and the Kaluza-Klein gluon is excluded for masses up to 3.4 TeV, depending on the decay widths of the particles.

A search for the decay of neutral, weakly interacting, long-lived particles using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The analysis in this paper uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV recorded in 2015–2016. The search employs techniques for reconstructing vertices of long-lived particles decaying into jets in the muon spectrometer exploiting a two-vertex strategy and a novel technique that requires only one vertex in association with additional activity in the detector that improves the sensitivity for longer lifetimes. The observed numbers of events are consistent with the expected background and limits for several benchmark signals are determined.

Technical Debt Management (TDM) has drawn the attention of software industries during the last years, including embedded systems. However, we currently lack an overview of how practitioners from this application domain perceive technical debt. To this end, we conducted a multiple case study in the embedded systems industry, to investigate: (a) the expected life-time of components that have TD, (b) the most frequently occurring types of TD in them, and (c) the significance of TD against run-time quality attributes. The case study was performed on seven embedded systems industries (telecommunications, printing, smart manufacturing, sensors, etc.) from five countries (Greece, Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, and Finland). The results of the case study suggest that: (a) maintainability is more seriously considered when the expected lifetime of components is larger than ten years, (b) the most frequent types of debt are test, architectural, and code debt, and (c) in embedded systems the run-time qualities are prioritized compared to design-time qualities that are usually associated with TD. The obtained results can be useful for both researchers and practitioners: the former can focus their research on the most industrially-relevant aspects of TD, whereas the latter can be informed about the most common types of TD and how to focus their TDM processes.

This paper presents a measurement of quantities related to the formation of jets from high-energy quarks and gluons (fragmentation). Jets with transverse momentum 100 GeV 500 MeV and |η|<2.5 are used to probe the detailed structure of the jet. The fragmentation properties of the more forward and the more central of the two leading jets from each event are studied. The data are unfolded to correct for detector resolution and acceptance effects. Comparisons with parton shower Monte Carlo generators indicate that existing models provide a reasonable description of the data across a wide range of phase space, but there are also significant differences. Furthermore, the data are interpreted in the context of quark- and gluon-initiated jets by exploiting the rapidity dependence of the jet flavor fraction. A first measurement of the charged-particle multiplicity using model-independent jet labels (topic modeling) provides a promising alternative to traditional quark and gluon extractions using input from simulation. The simulations provide a reasonable description of the quark-like data across the jet pT range presented in -this measurement, but the gluon-like data have systematically fewer charged particles than the simulation.

Determinants of participants' follow-up and characterization of representativeness in flu near you, a participatory disease surveillance system

Background: Flu Near You (FNY) is an Internet-based participatory surveillance system in the United States and Canada that allows volunteers to report influenza-like symptoms using a brief weekly symptom report. Objective: Our objective was to evaluate the representativeness of the FNY population compared with the general population of the United States, explore the demographic and behavioral characteristics associated with FNY's high-participation users, and summarize results from a user survey of a cohort of FNY participants. Methods: We compared (1) the representativeness of sex and age groups of FNY participants during the 2014-2015 flu season versus the general US population and (2) the distribution of Human Development Index (HDI) scores of FNY participants versus that of the general US population. We analyzed associations between demographic and behavioral factors and the level of participant follow-up (ie, high vs low). Finally, descriptive statistics of responses from FNY's 2015 and 2016 end-of-season user surveys were calculated. Results: During the 2014-2015 influenza season, 47,234 unique participants had at least one FNY symptom report that was either self-reported (users) or submitted on their behalf (household members). The proportion of female FNY participants was significantly higher than that of the general US population (n=28,906, 61.2% vs 51.1%, P<.001). Although each age group was represented in the FNY population, the age distribution was significantly different from that of the US population (P<.001). Compared with the US population, FNY had a greater proportion of individuals with HDI >5.0, signaling that the FNY user distribution was more affluent and educated than the US population baseline. We found that high-participation use (ie, higher participation in follow-up symptom reports) was associated with sex (females were 25% less likely than men to be high-participation users), higher HDI, not reporting an influenza-like illness at the first

Evolutionary algorithms are metaheuristic algorithms that mimic biological mechanisms for the solution of optimization problems. They are widely used in many problems of engineering, including image analysis and pattern recognition. Such methods had shown added value in overcoming certain problems and limitations of more traditional methods and approaches. This is particularly interesting in computer for designing faster and more accurate optimization methods. Despite recent advances in image registration, there is still room for improvement especially with the use of metaheuristic algorithms. In this paper, we present a novel method for solving the automated rigid registration problem by introducing a variant of the relatively new metaheuristic method called harmony search which shows promising results in difficult rigid registration cases.

The paper presents aspects related to the design and implementation of a Takagi-Sugeno (TS) proportionalderivative (PD) + integral (I) fuzzy controller for processes with variable moment of inertia. A two-step design method for the TS PD+I fuzzy controller applied to position control systems is proposed. The first step concerns the Extended Symmetrical Optimum method-based tuning of the parameters of linear PID controllers organized in a parallel scheme. The second step deals first with the fuzzification of the linear PD component in the PID controller scheme resulting in the TS PD fuzzy block (TS PD FB). The modal equivalence principle is next employed to tune the parameters of TS PD FB that operates as a bump-less interpolator between separately tuned PD controllers placed in the rule consequents. The presentation is focused on the position control of a representative mechatronics application with variable moment of inertia, namely the laboratory equipment built around the Model 220 Industrial Plant Emulator. Experimental results are given to validate the PID controllers and design method in several case studies. The comparison of TS PD+I fuzzy controller versus PID controllers is supported by experimental results. © 2015 IEEE.

Then the graph $G$ is $(a,d)$-$H$-antimagic if there exists a bijection $f:V\cup E\rightarrow \{1,2,\ldots ,|V|+|E|\}$ such that, for all subgraphs $H^{\prime }$ of $G$ isomorphic to $H$, the $H^{\prime }$-weights, $wt_{f}(H^{\prime })=\sum _{v\in V(H^{\prime })}f(v)+\sum _{e\in E(H^{\prime })}f(e)$, form an arithmetic progression with the initial term $a$ and the common difference $d$. When $f(V)=\{1,2,\ldots ,|V|\}$, then $G$ is said to be super $(a,d)$-$H$-antimagic. In this paper, we study super $(a,d)$-$H$-antimagic labellings of a disjoint union of graphs for $d=|E(H)|-|V(H)|$.

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass and width via its decay to two Z bosons is presented. Proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, is used. The invariant mass distribution of four leptons in the on-shell Higgs boson decay is used to measure its mass and constrain its width. This yields the most precise single measurement of the Higgs boson mass to date, 125.04±0.12 GeV, and an upper limit on the width ΓH<330 MeV at 95% confidence level. A combination of the on- and off-shell Higgs boson production decaying to four leptons is used to determine the Higgs boson width, assuming that no new virtual particles affect the production, a premise that is tested by adding new heavy particles in the gluon fusion loop model. This result is combined with a previous CMS analysis of the off-shell Higgs boson production with decay to two leptons and two neutrinos, giving a measured Higgs boson width of 3.0−1.5+2.0 MeV, in agreement with the standard model prediction of 4.1 MeV. The strength of the off-shell Higgs boson production is also reported. The scenario of no off-shell Higgs boson production is excluded at a confidence level corresponding to 3.8 standard deviations.
