Nanoparticles are potentially powerful therapeutic tools that have the capacity to target drug payloads and imaging agents. However, some nanoparticles can activate complement, a branch of the innate immune system, and cause adverse side-effects. Recently, we employed an in vitro hemolysis assay to measure the serum complement activity of perfluorocarbon nanoparticles that differed by size, surface charge, and surface chemistry, quantifying the nanoparticle-dependent complement activity using a metric called Residual Hemolytic Activity (RHA). In the present work, we have used a decision tree learning algorithm to derive the rules for estimating nanoparticle-dependent complement response based on the data generated from the hemolytic assay studies. Our results indicate that physicochemical properties of nanoparticles, namely, size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, and mole percentage of the active surface ligand of a nanoparticle, can serve as good descriptors for prediction of nanoparticle-dependent complement activation in the decision tree modeling framework. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper elaborates on two radio resource management (RRM) algorithms exploited to optimally allocate radio spectrum and maintain maximum energy in cognitive radio (CR) network nodes of a centralized system architecture. Both RRM algorithms allow for effective TV White Spaces (TVWS) exploitation, using a radio spectrum broker. This broker orchestrates TVWS trading, between several secondary systems, based on an energy-efficient process, as well as the real time secondary spectrum market policy. The proposed TVWS allocation process follows, either a fixed-price or an auction-based trading approach. The efficiency of both algorithms is validated through a number of experimental tests, conducted under controlled simulation conditions. More specifically, their performance was evaluated, in terms of spectrum broker benefit, energy consumption level and throughput response, during TVWS allocation process. © 2013 ACM.

In recent years, Taiwan has enhanced the manufacturing advantages in the competitive global market because of excellent manufacturing processes, product quality, and the flexible delivery date and speed. However, how to maintain the competitive advantages in the global market has become an issue. Due the advanced development of the Internet, the cloud computing technology has significant progress and become more matured. Therefore, if the cloud computing technology can be applied in the supply chain of the manufacturing industry, the information among manufacturing, assembly, logistics, sales, and customers can be shared and accessed easily. In this study, a cloud-based supply chain integration service platform of the manufacturing industry is developed, and this platform includes the supplier management, procurement and materials management, manufacturing management, facilities planning, customer service, transportation and physical distribution, and information flow to form a supply chain integration service cloud. Thus, the members of the whole supply chain integration service cloud are able to work together, and rapidly deploy and dynamically allocate resources, and the computer hardware and software resources of the upstream and downstream can be appropriately shared. By doing so, the inventory fluctuations caused by the bullwhip effect can also be reduced. Eventually, it will achieve the goals of shortening delivery time, raising production capacity utilization, and decreasing the material preparation time.

This paper treats the design and implementation of a low-cost neuro-fuzzy control solution for a class of servo systems with an integral component and variable parameters. A hybrid Takagi-Sugeno PI-neuro-fuzzy controller (T-S PI-N-FC) is proposed and presented along with its relatively simple design approach. The solution carries out the on-line adaptation of a single parameter of the input membership functions of a Takagi-Sugeno PI-fuzzy controller with input integration (T-S PI-FC-II) by a single neuron trained by back propagation with momentum factor in the framework of a model reference adaptive controller structure. The second parameter of the input membership functions is tuned by the modal equivalence principle. Linear matrix inequalities are proposed as sufficient stability conditions to be fulfilled by the parameters of the rule consequents of the T-S PI-FC-II in order to guarantee the stable design of the hybrid T-S PI-N-FC. The solution is validated by a case study using a set of three process parameters that correspond to a strip winding system laboratory equipment. Digital simulation results and experimental results are given.

This paper proposes a data-driven algorithm that solves an optimal control problem by iteratively tuning the controller. The data-driven algorithm solves the optimization problem for a nonlinear process with a linear controller, accounting for operational constraints and employing an interior-point barrier (IPB) algorithm. The search process in the IPB algorithm requires first-order information which is generated using identified models via neural networks in order to reduce the number of experiments. A case study which deals with the angular position control of a nonlinear aerodynamic system is included to validate the new algorithm by simulation results.

This paper discusses new optimal path planning algorithms based on a Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) and on a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm applied to multiple mobile robots on holonomic wheeled platforms. Four path planning objectives are aggregated in the definition of a set of separate optimization problems for each robot. Each optimization problem involves a single scalar objective function (o.f.) expressed as the weighted sum of four o.f.s. The GSA and the PSO algorithm solve the optimization problems aiming the minimization of the o.f.s, and the path planning algorithms transform the solutions to the optimization problems into optimal solutions as optimal paths. The GSA-and PSO-based path planning algorithms are validated by several experiments with multiple robots that participate in missions.

It is difficult to objectively and quantitatively judge image quality by a single criterion, such as contrast. In general, excessive contrast enhancement easily leads to a loss of image quality. Thus, it easily gives a wrong evaluation to rank image quality according to contrast values. In order to achieve a consistent result with human vision perception, balancing multi-criteria will be a feasible approach. Therefore, we propose a multi-criteria image quality evaluation scheme for ranking seven existing contrast enhancement methods. The scheme applies four criteria to a newly proposed way of computing a grey relational grade (GRGd), called the consistent grey relational grade (CGRGd). Experimental results show that our proposed CGRGd do provides a very effective mechanism to choose the best method for a specific purpose. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

This work considers Artificial Immune Systems to solve the economic load dispatch problem. The Immune Systems are based on the clonal selection principle. Cultural Algorithms using normative, situational, historical and topographical knowledge sources are used to improve the global optimization property of immune systems. A new main influence function is proposed which improves the results obtained by the cultural version. All the proposed approaches have several points of self-adaptation and use a local search operator that is based on a quasi-simplex technique. The Immune System and its cultural versions are validated in test problems that consider 13 and 40 thermal generators and take into account valve-point loading effects. They are also validated in a test problem with 20 thermal generators, valve-point loading effects and transmission losses. The proposed cultural method including the new influence function outperforms other modern metaheuristics reported in recent literature, finding the minimum fuel cost value for all test systems.
