The equipment used for radiation hazard evaluation usually is based in measuring the total electric field strength over a frequency bandwidth of interest. However, because of the fact that the defined Reference Levels (RL) according to the ICNIRP Guidelines or other specific legislation are frequency dependent, the compliance of a particular RF or microwave transmitter and its contribution to the total received electromagnetic energy at a given measurement location is not easily identifiable. On the other hand, narrowband measurements can be used to determine the incident electric field from every single transmitter. However, in such a case, a large number of measurements are required in order to estimate its contribution to the total electric field strength and consequently to check for compliance with the legislation limits, due to the fact that directional antennas should be used. In this work a method is presented for determining: the total electric field from a particular direction to a specific point of a measurement location (e.g. in the vicinity of a mobile base station), the angle of maximum incident electric field and the total exposure quotient from the sources laying at that particular location in a frequency band of interest.

From System-on-chip to Network-on-chip, the main dissimilarity is replacing the bus with the network. How connect, how formative network function is related to topology structure. In this paper we propose a topology structure for NoC, and compare it with mesh, torus, the fat tree, octagon, spidergon topology networks by five kinds of mainly properties: node degree, network diameter, connectivity, the average most short-circuit path and the average shortest wire length. Experiment results show that this topology has better performance on cost/performance layout.

An attempt to connect finite automata theory with multi-agent systems is presented. The purpose is to obtain an accurate way to plan and control the robot activities within a multi-robot system. The proposed model is an adapted Moore machine, which is to be used with a contract net protocol agent coordination procedure. The first step in order to obtain good hand prosthesis consists in designing a model, based on the natural one and capable to reflect its architecture and functions. This is the reason why the researchers all over the world give a lot of attention to modeling the human hand. There are quite few solutions for human hand prosthesis, but the main setbacks are that each of them is too complex to be afforded by the majority of patients (especially the ones in underdeveloped countries) and none of them can perform as many tasks as the natural model. Having this in mind, we determined the kinematical and dynamical models of the human hand, to obtain a model as close as possible to the natural one. We realized, also, that if we limit our model's capabilities to the most important function of the hand, namely prehension (considering that the vast majority of potential patients have one good hand for performing delicate actions), then we can obtain an affordable human hand prosthesis with grabbing capabilities, which can help impaired people to manage through most of the daily activities. We propose a hydraulic based solution to actuate our hand prosthesis, which allows us to believe that our model is one of the simpler, yet reliable and non-expensive, among the specific research in the field.

Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) is a valuable method for determining Her-2/neu status in breast carcinoma samples, an important prognostic indicator. Visual evaluation of FISH images is a difficult task which involves manual counting of dots in multiple images, a procedure which is both time consuming and prone to human error. A number of algorithms have recently been developed dealing with (semi)-automated analysis of FISH images. These algorithms are quite promising but further improvement is required in improving their accuracy. Here, we present a novel method for analyzing FISH images based on the statistical properties of Radial Basis Functions. Our method was evaluated on a data set of 100 breast carcinoma cases provided by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Pisa, with promising results.

In this article I deal with singularities of a rational B-Spline representation of the sphere. If just one rectangular parametric patch is used to form the whole sphere then two unwanted singularities arise. Those are the two points lying on the axis of revolution and therefore during the rotation of the half circle through an angle of 360 degrees around the diameter they form two degenerate isoparametric curves in one parametric direction. Of course, such points are problematic for most applications in graphics and CAD design because in their vicinity existing numerical methods for curve/surface or surface/surface intersections fail to converge. To circumvent this I suggest to use at least three such parametric patches via trimmed surfaces to fully describe the boundary of the sphere preserving the Euler formula and geometric G2 continuity of the resulting solid.

The paper introduces an algorithm for personalized clustering based on a range tree structure, used for identifying all web documents satisfying a set of predefined personal user preferences. The returned documents go through a clustering phase before reaching the end user, thus allowing more effective manipulation and supporting the decision making process. The proposed algorithm demonstrates increased applicability in semantic web settings, since they offer the infrastructure for the explicit declaration of web document attributes and their respective values, thus allowing for more automated retrieval. The proposed algorithm improves the k-means range algorithm, as it uses the already constructed range tree (i.e. during the personalized filtering phase) as the basic structure on which the clustering step is based, applying instead of the k-means, the k-windows algorithm. The total number of parameters used for modeling the web documents dictates the number of dimensions of the Euclidean space representation. The time complexity of the algorithm is O(log d-2n+v), where d is the number of dimensions, n is the total number of web documents and v is the size of the answer. Copyright 2006 ACM.

In this paper the authors present an overview of techniques and tools that enable the effective evaluation and refactoring of a Web application's conceptual schema. Moreover, based on the introduction of the notion of model clones (in a previous work), as partial conceptual schemas that are repeated within a broader application model and the notion of model smells, as certain blocks in the Web applications model that imply the possibility of refactoring, this paper illustrates a methodology and a tool for detecting and evaluating the existence of potential model clones, in order to identify problems in an application's conceptual schema by means of efficiency, consistency, usability and overall quality. The methodology can be deployed either in the process of designing an application or in the process of reengineering it. Evaluation is performed according to a number of inspection steps. At first level the compositions used in the hypertext design are evaluated, followed by a second level evaluation concerning data manipulation and presentation to the user.

The interface usability of mobile applications is a critical factor for the acceptance of m-commerce, as a good interface design allows users achieve high performance when using mobile applications. However, this it is especially difficult to achieve due to certain limitations of mobile devices; limited processing power, low-bandwidth communication, small display and overall device size, limited mobile Internet coverage, delays in standardization and poor quality of service. This paper provides a new analytical robust stability checking method of fractional-order linear time invariant interval uncertain system. This paper continues the authors' previous work (Chen et al., 2005a) where matrix perturbation theory was used. For the new robust stability checking, Lyapunov inequality is utilized for finding the maximum eigenvalue of a Hermitian matrix. Through numerical examples, the usefulness and the effectiveness of the newly proposed method are verified.
