Concurrent with the rise of real-time wireless systems enabled by the Internet of Things, the age of information (AoI) has been widely perceived as a crucial destination-centric performance metric to quantify the timeliness of data delivery. This paper deals with the analysis of information freshness in a multi-source M/G/1 queueing system with utilization of idle server time, referred to as server vacation, in an effective manner. In particular, the status update packets in our model are generated independently by a finite set of source nodes and according to a Poisson process, while their service time follows a general random variable. Using stochastic decomposition and the Laplace-Stieltjes transform, we derive the average AoI (AAoI) expression for the multi-source M/G/1 queueing model with generally-distributed vacation time in closed form. Our numerical simulations validate the accuracy of the derived AAoI expression and assess the impact of different parameters on the system performance.

This paper presents the application of the tensor product (TP)-based model transformation approach to produce Tower CRrane (TCR) systems models. The modeling approach starts with a nonlinear model of TCR systems as representative multi-input–multi-output controlled processes. A linear parameter-varying model is next derived, and the modeling steps specific to TP–based model transformation are proceeded to obtain the TP model. The TP model is tested on TCR laboratory equipment in two open-loop scenarios considering chirp signals and pseudorandom binary step signals applied to the three model inputs (control inputs). The nonlinear and TP model outputs in the two scenarios are the payload position, the cart position, and the arm angular position. The nonlinear and TP model outputs are collected, measured, and compared. The simulation results prove that the derived TP model approximately mimics the behavior of the nonlinear model;both system responses and numerical approximation errors are illustrated. © 2021 Chinese Automatic Control Society and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd

We propose an SDN-based Non-IP multi-protocol platform (REWIRE) that mixes and matches, on-demand, multi-ple Non-IP protocol strategies with real rapidly-detected network conditions and loT data communication patterns. The REWIRE solution supports centralized monitoring of Wireless Mesh Net-works (WMN) and manages alternative Non-IP protocols stacks (i.e., NDN, DTN & NoD) in an adaptable manner based on change-point analysis & clustering mechanisms. To this end, our proposal grafts flexibility and adaptability capabilities to the WMN providing the communication backbone in real Smart-City environments. Our platform was implemented in real WMNs environments over Fed4FIRE+ test-beds considering an loT sce-nario using traffic patterns based on real sensor measurements.

The advent of Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has revolutionized manufacturing and production systems, enhancing efficiency and communication through the integration of advanced technologies such as IoT devices and AI. However, this increased digitization has also led to heightened cybersecurity risks, with a notable rise in the frequency and complexity of cyber-attacks. Cyber Ranges emerges as a critical solution in addressing these challenges, offering a controlled environment for simulating cyber-attack scenarios, training cybersecurity teams, and developing robust defense strategies. The escalating demand for cybersecurity professionals has highlighted the crucial need for effective training solutions. This article presents an open-source Cyber Range constructed on container-based architecture, meticulously engineered for efficient operation with minimal resource consumption. In response to the scarcity of cybersecurity experts, this platform prioritizes extensive scalability and robust isolation between exercises, ensuring secure learning environments, and also integrates a complex developed exercise series aimed at strengthening cybersecurity learning experiences. These exercises encompass a variety of scenarios and challenges, catering to professionals at different skill levels. Each exercise replicates real-world cyber threats, offering practical, hands-on learning opportunities. Additionally, a comprehensive questionnaire accompanies these exercises, designed to gather feedback on participants' experiences.

With the advancement of network technology, more electronic devices have begun to connect to the Internet. The era of IoE (Internet of Everything) is coming. However, the number of serious incidents of cyberattacks on important facilities has gradually increased at the same time. Security becomes an important issue when setting up plenty of network devices in an environment. Thus, we propose an innovative mechanism of the Moving Target Defense (MTD) to solve the problems happening to other MTD mechanisms in the past. This method applies Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to dynamically change the IPv4 address of information equipment in the medical environment. In other words, each of the nodes performs IP-Hopping and effectively avoids malicious attacks. Communication between devices relies on DNS lookup. The mechanism avoids problems such as time synchronization and IP conflict. Also, it greatly reduces the costs of large-scale deployment. All of these problems are encountered by other MTD mechanisms in the past. Not only can the mechanism be applied to the medical and information equipment, it can also be applied to various devices connected to the Internet, including Industrial Control System (ICS). The mechanism is implemented in existing technologies and prevents other problems, which makes it easy to build a system. © 2021 ECBIOS 2021. All rights reserved.

Exploiting Circular Shifts for Efficient Chaotic Image Encryption

This work presents a chaotic image encryption algorithm that acts on the binary level of the image for effective permutation, and on the byte level for substitution. The permutation step combines actions of bit level rearranging, and bit shuffling. Circular shift operations are used for bit shuffling, to reduce the execution time. Circular shifts are also applied to shuffle the permutation and substitution rules, effectively increasing security at a very low execution cost. The encryption keys are plaintext dependent, and a key mixing step in included, so that each part of the key affects all the subsequent encryption operations. For the encryption, a new Soboleva hyperbolic tangent based map is first designed. The dynamical behavior of the map is studied and shows robust chaos, and an absence of equilibria, meaning that it can generate hidden attractors. This map is used as an entropy source, along with a chaotic pseudo random number generator (PRNG). The encryption process shows a good performance under a collection of tests, and has also a low execution time, 0.0134 sec for a $256\times 256$ image, 0.0530 sec for a $512\times 512$ image, and 0.2050 sec for a $1024\times 1024$ image. So the proposed algorithm is a viable option for fast, efficient, and secure data encryption.

Using medical data to improve diagnosis accuracy has recently become common practice in hospitals. A modern computing environment has enabled real-time diagnosis of medical data using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). To extract and evaluate skin melanoma recorded with digital dermatoscopy images (DDI), we developed a CNN segmentation framework. In this proposal, four phases are proposed: (i) DDI collection and resizing, (ii) DDI enhancement using pre-processing techniques, (iii) CNN segmentation for lesion extraction, (v) Comparing the extracted sections to the ground truth images, and (v) Verifying whether the framework is valid. Using DDI pre-processed with (i) Traditional procedures, (ii) Otsu’s thresholding, (iii) Kapur’s thresholding, and (iv) Fuzzy-Tsallis thresholding, this proposal examines the different CNN segmentation schemes presented in the literature. For mining skin lesions, the Moth-Flame Algorithm (MFA) combined with tri-level thresholding achieves an optimal threshold for the DDI. With Fuzzy-Tsallis thresholding images, the VGG-UNet performs better than the alternatives. This framework helps to achieve better values of Jaccard (88.47±2.13%), Dice (93.08±1.17%), and Accuracy (98.64±0.71%) on the chosen DDI database.

computerized disease detection systems (CDDs) have proven effective for automatic screening in recent years. Among the standard procedures in hospitals for faster and more accurate diagnosis is medical imaging-based disease screening. We aim to develop a CDD that detects COVID-19 using chest X-rays pre-trained vision transformers (PVTs). This scheme includes the following steps: (1) collecting images and resizing them, (2) implementing PVT for feature extraction, and (3) binary classifying the results and validating the proposed schemes. To prove the merit of the developed scheme, 4800 images (2400 normal and 2400 COVID-19) are analyzed. MLP classifiers verify the PVT performance using patch sizes of 6, 12, and 24. A patch size 24 results in 97.5% accuracy for the proposed CDD system. When patch sizes are increased to 12, accuracy increases to over 98%. For this specific task, smaller patch sizes are more effective. These high-accuracy results demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed scheme for detecting COVID-19 in chest X-rays.

Automatic liver-vessel examination from CT slice using Kapur’s thresholding and watershed algorithm

computerized medical image examination (CMIE) plays a significant role in modern hospitals to achieve the necessary tasks, like segmentation and classification. By segmenting an image, we can extract a particular section for examination. A two-dimensional computed tomography (CT) slice was used for liver-vessel examination (LiVE). A simple automatic technique for supporting LiVE is being developed in this research. A CT slice is collected, a 3D to 2D conversion is done, (ii) Kapur’s tri-level thresholding and Hummingbird-Optimizer is used to enhance the CT slice, (iii) the watershed algorithm (WA) is used to extract the vessel, and (iv) the WA is compared and verified against the segmentation methods chosen. WA provides better segmentation results than other methods because it is an automatic approach. Using the chosen image database, the proposed technique achieves an overall segmentation accuracy of >97%. Other segmentation problems can be used in the future to verify the merit of this scheme.

The paper presents current design issues, limitations, and fabrication challenges towards the development of hybrid integrated optical circuits with embedded single photon sources, which are critical components for future quantum computing, sensing, and communication systems. Optical nanowires with embedded quantum dots (NWQD) are very promising single photon sources, with several reported results of integration in high index platforms like silicon or silicon nitride. Silica on silicon is a favorable platform for optical computing, providing the high degree of customization when combined with direct laser writing techniques for definition of optical structures with refractive index modification. However, the low ~10-3 achievable refractive index contrast imposes strict limitations on the compatibility with NWQD resulting in general in low coupling efficiency as shown in this work. Consideration of several design and fabrication issues demonstrates the potential for NQWD integration in laser written silica based optical circuits with adequate efficiency for practical applications. © 2023 IEEE.
