Accurately time-aligned spectral targets are essential for training electrocorticographic (ECoG) brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) intended for real-time speech output. This alignment is particularly challenging with "silent speech, " in which speech occurs without phonation, or in the extreme, without articulation. Crafting suitably precise targets for silent speech is complex and error-prone due to multiple sources of temporal imprecision. We investigated how these temporal inaccuracies impact deep neural network performance in synthesizing speech from a BCI clinical trial participant who retained some speech capability. By simulating silent speech conditions through distortions in known acoustic target timings, we observed significant performance degradations at both phonetic and syllabic timescales. Accuracy-based measures offered a more reliable assessment of intelligibility than traditional metrics like the short-time objective intelligibility index, which may overestimate performance in low-precision contexts. These results underscore the need for advanced alignment techniques with precise phonetic and syllabic guarantees for silent speech BCIs focused on providing immediate output. © 2025 IEEE.

Accurately modeling seismic wave propagation in complex subsurface geologic structures is crucial for understanding their properties. However, 3D seismic wave modeling can be computationally demanding, requiring a significant amount of computer memory and runtime. To address this issue, a more efficient and accurate approach known as 2.5D modeling can be used when the subsurface geologic structure is two dimensions. We develop a new numerical method for 2.5D time-domain viscoelastic wave modeling characterized by the subdomain Chebyshev differentiation for accurate spatial derivatives, a Taylor-series recursive approach for accurate computations of temporal convolutions, a novel transform of the complex-domain computations into real-domain implementation, and fully parallel computing for high computational efficiency. Comparing our results with 3D analytical and numerical reference solutions, we demonstrate that our method offers satisfactory accuracies, excellent computational efficiencies, and a powerful capability of modeling 3D wavefields in complex 2D heterogeneous viscoacoustic and viscoelastic geologic models. Overall, our findings provide a robust and efficient approach for modeling seismic wave propagation in complex 2D subsurface geologic structures. © 2025 Society of Exploration Geophysicists All rights reserved.

Simulations are commonly used to develop and evaluate video encryption algorithms. Although these approaches are useful for demonstrating theoretical feasibility and algorithm performance, they neglect practical challenges and real-world communication conditions. This oversight creates a critical gap in evaluating their effectiveness and security in practical applications. In this paper, we describe a novel, to the best of our knowledge, video encryption scheme that employs a modified chaotic Colpitts oscillator, a customized Josephus problem, and ribonucleic acid (RNA) operations, and is implemented in visible light communication (VLC) environment. The modified Colpitts oscillator reveals significant phenomena, the most prominent for this study being chaos. The encryption scheme involves block scrambling and pixel-level permutation employing a customized Josephus problem and a column and row shifting technique. Diffusion is then achieved through a custom Josephus problem-oriented RNA operation combined with basic RNA operations and cipher block chaining (CBC). Based on the results, we found that the customized Josephus problem-based permutation performed more efficiently than traditional methods, whereas the column and row shifting permutation was more robust. By eliminating key sequence coding and item-to-item operations, the proposed RNA operation reduces computational overhead. This video encryption scheme is proven to be effective and resilient at securing video data transmitted over the VLC channel, and it constitutes a significant advancement in areas such as surveillance, medical imaging, and military communication requiring robust secured video data. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group. Datasets used in data analysis often contain irrelevant or redundant attributes. These attributes hinder the performance of predictive models. Therefore, an effective preprocessing feature selection procedure is essential to identify the relevant features and eliminate unnecessary ones. Metaheuristic algorithms, inspired mainly by nature, are strong candidates for the feature selection process, as they can efficiently search large solution spaces. Metaheuristic algorithms provide flexible strategies for complex optimization problems such as traveling salesman problem, scheduling problems, nonlinear integer programming, and multi-objective optimization. Reasonably balancing exploration and exploitation will increase the search algorithm’s performance. This research combines Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Harris Hawk Optimization (HHO) to form a Hybrid PSO-HHO approach to enhance the feature selection process. The wrapper-based approach employs the K-nearest neighbors classifier using the Euclidean distance metric to identify the optimal solutions. The performance of the proposed binary algorithm is evaluated using four standard benchmark datasets obtained from the UCI repository. Classification accuracy and the number of selected features are used as performance indicators. Experimental results demonstrated that the hybrid model achieved mean accuracies of 95.23%, 97.61%, and 92.24% across various datasets, outperforming traditional PSO and HHO approaches. © 2013 IEEE.

Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are widely used to correct errors in storage systems. Finding the error locator polynomial is one of the key steps in the error correction procedure of RS codes. Modular Approach (MA) is an effective algorithm for solving the Welch-Berlekamp (WB) key-equation problem to find the error locator polynomial that needs 2t steps, where t is the error correction capability. In this paper, we first present a new MA algorithm that only requires 2e steps and then propose two fast decoding algorithms for RS codes based on our MA algorithm, where e is the number of errors and e ≤ t. We propose the Improved-Frequency Domain Modular Approach (I-FDMA) algorithm that needs 2e steps to solve the error locator polynomial and present our first decoding algorithm based on the I-FDMA algorithm. We show that, compared with the existing methods based on MA algorithms, our I-FDMA algorithm can effectively reduce the decoding complexity of RS codes when e 0 -Shortened I-FDMA ( t0 -SI-FDMA) algorithm ( t0 is a predetermined even number less than 2t − 1 ) based on the new termination mechanism to solve the error number e quickly. We propose our second decoding algorithm based on the SI-FDMA algorithm for RS codes and show that the multiplication complexity of our second decoding algorithm is lower than our first decoding algorithm (the I-FDMA decoding algorithm) when 2e 0 + 1. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

We present a third version of the PraK system designed around an effective text-image and image-image search model. The system integrates sub-image search options for localized context search for CLIP and image color/texture and interfaces tailored to specific task types. A user study shows the benefits of sub-image search in homogeneous video collections. The Feistel Boomerang Connectivity Table (FBCT), which is the Feistel version of the Boomerang Connectivity Table (BCT), plays a role in analyzing block ciphers’ ability to withstand strong attacks, such as boomerang attacks. However, as of now, only four classes of power functions are known to have explicit values for all entries in their FBCT. In this paper, we focus on studying the FBCT of the power function F(x)=x2n-2-1 over F2n, where n is a positive integer. Through certain refined manipulations to solve specific equations over F2n and employing binary Kloosterman sums, we determine explicit values for all entries in the FBCT of F(x) and further analyze its Feistel boomerang spectrum. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are frequently considered high credit risk, making it difficult to obtain loans from banks. A viable substitute for assessing borrower creditworthiness more impartially is using machine learning-based credit risk assessment (CRA) algorithms. This study evaluated the performance of five machine learning techniques: decision tree, support vector machine, gradient boosting, K-nearest neighbor, and Naïve Bayes. We evaluated each model with K-fold cross-validation and utilized the Stepwise selection method for the variable selection. To address the underlying data imbalance, we balanced the dataset with the SMOTE technique, which showed that normal loans were more widespread than Non-Performing Loans (NPLs). After balancing the data, the Gradient Boosting model displayed the best accuracy, F-measure, and robustness without variable selection, making it the most effective model for predicting SME loans. © 2025 IEEE.

Quantifying the effect of heat acclimation (HA) on critical wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGTcrit) and rate of rectal temperature change (vTre) is relevant for developing guidelines with regards to occupational safety while working in warm environments. This study quantified the effect of HA and the period following cessation of the HA protocol on WBGTcrit and vTre. Twenty-eight non-acclimatized participants were divided into a HA (n = 15) and control (CON;n = 13) group. The HA group underwent a warm-humid (35_C, 65% relative humidity) controlled hyperthermia HA protocol (5-9 days of achieving Tre _38.5_C for 60 min) and four progressive heat stress tests (HSTs) to identify WBGTcrit and examine vTre: pre-, after 5 and 9 days of HA, and 4 to 8 days of no heat exposure following HA. CON performed two HSTs on average 13 days apart without heat exposure in between. HA increased WBGTcrit after nine (28.5 ±2.7_C vs. 30.5 ± 2.0_C;P = 0.016) but not 5 days (28.5 ± 2.4;P > 0.05). No effect of HA on vTre was observed (P > 0.05). Four-to-eight days post-HA, WBGTcrit and vTre did not differ compared with 9 days of HA (P > 0.05). However, a reduction in vTre (_0.4 ± 0.3 _C/h) was observed when comparing 4 to 8 days post-HA to pre-HA. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that more than 5 days of HA are required to increase WBGTcrit and indicate that 9 days of HA proceeded by adequate recovery reduced vTre during exercise in the heat. In this paper, two techniques including uplink positioning and multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) singular value decomposition (SVD) beamforming are proposed and utilized to provide a novel physical layer security (PLS) scheme for visible light communication (VLC) systems, which much enhance the integrated location-sensing and data security strength. The paper first develops a closed-form mathematical model for ubiquitous uplink positioning using a single light-emitting diode with the trilateration algorithm, considering the field-of-view constraints due to the user’s optical transmitter and access point receivers. SVD in MIMO VLC is subsequently introduced to exploit the acquired user’s location to form a pair of public and private keys for secure data transfer over the physical medium. The proposed system performance is evaluated in terms of the root mean square positioning error ΕX and the achieved bit error rate (BER) for the uplink positioning and the downlink data transmission, respectively. Results show that the effective area of the photodiode significantly impacts ΕX, with smaller areas resulting in higher ΕX. It is also observed that the ΕX directly relates to the strength of ambient light inducing noise in the system. However, the proposed uplink positioning is less prone to natural ambient light as compared to the traditional downlink visible light positioning. The BER analysis of the downlink data transmission shows that the proposed SVD-based PLS enhances the system’s confidentiality by significantly narrowing the communication zone area by over 90% in comparison to the zero-forcing beamforming scheme and achieves reasonable secrecy capacity. © 1983-2012 IEEE.
