Blockchain technology gained much traction in the last few years. These decentralized databases offer security, immutability, and scalability across various applications. Decentralized applications generate vast amounts of data, known as events, that are recorded on the blockchain and are public to anyone. Some people may see opportunities for financial gains in these events and would like to know when they occur. This paper proposes a solution to process and deliver those events as real-time alerts to the users. It uses existing technologies such as message queues, multithreading, and asynchronous processing and integrates them into a scalable architecture. The results we achieved in this paper show that for an evenly distributed network traffic, which does not entirely consists of transaction bursts, the proposed solution offers reliability, efficiency, and a suitable delivery time to those wishing to integrate it into their projects. With time, this solution, or improved architectures, may form the basis of the following big-data architectures for processing blockchain events.

Graphics processing units (GPU) are an integral part of today's computing environment. The marketing emphasis on user experience pushes vendors to constantly look for better graphics hardware and newer drivers to integrate into their products. Most commodity GPUs function as accelerators for image and video processing tasks and are present (either as dedicated or integrated form factor) in everyday devices including desktops, laptops, smartphones or other portable gadgets. Recent trends have seen the GPU move to perform additional tasks such as offloading some of the computation from the CPU or solve highly parallel problems. As GPUs become more powerful and widespread they will naturally become a very attractive target for attackers. Cybercriminals will look for any vulnerability in the GPU hardware or software, and will try to use it as an attack vector to compromise the system. This paper presents some of the incidents that involve the use of GPUs to perform malicious actions and proposes a framework to allow analysts to inspect the code executed on the GPU and trigger security alerts. The proposed solution will look at the processes running inside an operating system, it will identify which of them require access to the GPU and will try to intercept and scan for any suspicious activities, similar to a conventional security solution. © 2021 IEEE.

Modeling uncertainty has been an active and important topic in the fields of data-driven modeling and machine learning. Uncertainty ubiquitously exists in any data modeling process, making it challenging to identify the optimal models among many potential candidates. This article proposes an uncertainty-informed method to address the model selection problem. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated on a dataset generated from a complex system model. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and its superiority over conventional approaches. This method has minimal requirements for the length of training data and model types, making it applicable for various modeling frameworks.

This paper proposes a new disturbance observer (DO)-based reinforcement learning (RL) control approach for nonlinear systems with unmatched (generalized) disturbances. While a nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO) is utilized to measure the plant uncertainties, disturbances can exist in the plant via distinct channels from those of the control signals; so-called mismatched disturbances are theoretically difficult to attenuate within the channel of the system's states. A generalized disturbance observer-based compensator is implemented to address the uncertainty cancellation problem by removing the influence of uncertainties from the output channels. Con-currently, a composite actor-critic RL scheme is utilized for approximating the optimal control policy as well as the ideal value function pertaining to the compensated system by solving a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation for both online and offline iterations simultaneously. Stability analysis verifies the convergence of the proposed framework. Simulation results are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Risk-Aware Wasserstein Distributionally Robust control of Vessels in Natural Waterways

In the realm of maritime transportation, autonomous vessel navigation in natural inland waterways faces persistent challenges due to unpredictable natural factors. Existing scheduling algorithms fall short in handling these uncertainties, compromising both safety and efficiency. Moreover, these algorithms are primarily designed for non-autonomous vessels, leading to labor-intensive operations vulnerable to human error. To address these issues, this study proposes a risk-aware motion control approach for vessels that accounts for the dynamic and uncertain nature of tide islands in a distributionally robust manner. Specifically, a model predictive control method is employed to follow the reference trajectory in the time-space map while incorporating a risk constraint to prevent grounding accidents. To address uncertainties in tide islands, a novel modeling technique represents them as stochastic polytopes. Additionally, potential inaccuracies in waterway depth are addressed through a risk constraint that considers the worst-case uncertainty distribution within a Wasserstein ambiguity set around the empirical distribution. Using sensor data collected in the Guadalquivir River, we empirically demonstrate the performance of the proposed method through simulations on a vessel. As a result, the vessel successfully navigates the waterway while avoiding grounding accidents, even with a limited dataset of observations. This stands in contrast to existing non-robust controllers, highlighting the robustness and practical applicability of the proposed approach. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In order to identify the characteristics of unknown objects, humans-in contrast to robotic systems-are experts in exploiting their sensory and motoric abilities to refine visual information via haptic perception. While recent research has focused on either estimating the geometry or material properties, this work strives to combine these aspects by outlining a probabilistic framework that efficiently refines initial knowledge from visual sensors by generating a belief state over the object shape while simultaneously learn material parameters. Specifically, we present a grid-based and a shape-based exploration strategy, that both apply the concepts of Bayesian-Filter theory in order to decrease the uncertainty. Furthermore, the presented framework is able to learn about the geometry as well as to distinguish areas of different material types by applying unsupervised machine learning methods. The experimental results from a virtual exploration task highlight the potential of the presented methods towards enabling robots to autonomously explore unknown objects, yielding information about shape and structure of the underlying object and thus, opening doors to robotic applications where environmental knowledge is limited. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

The superior performance of object detectors is often established under the condition that the test samples are in the same distribution as the training data. However, in many practical applications, out-of-distribution (OOD) instances are inevitable and usually lead to uncertainty in the results. In this paper, we propose a novel, intuitive, and scalable probabilistic object detection method for OOD detection. Unlike other uncertainty-modeling methods that either require huge computational costs to infer the weight distributions or rely on model training through synthetic outlier data, our method is able to distinguish between in-distribution (ID) data and OOD data via weight parameter sampling from proposed Gaussian distributions based on pre-trained networks. We demonstrate that our Bayesian object detector can achieve satisfactory OOD identification performance by reducing the FPR95 score by up to 8.19% and increasing the AUROC score by up to 13.94% when trained on BDD100k and VOC datasets as the ID datasets and evaluated on COCO2017 dataset as the OOD dataset.

In this work, an attempt is made for the first time to use the measurement pattern generated by morphological transformation quantified by Hausdorff fractal dimension (HFD) and classified with ensemble learning based on bagging. The proposed work uses three morphological transformations for image preprocessing: hit-and-miss transform (HMT), white (WHT), and black top-hat (BHT). The pattern texture of US breast images is described by extracting the HFD from the regions of interest (ROI) after the ultrasound (US) images have been preprocessed. The main objective of this study was achieved by comparatively analyzing the classification performance of features using the Random Forest (RF), Extra Trees (ET) classifier, and bagging ensemble method based on XGBoot classifier. In presented study, the XGBoost classifier and BHT image processing method give an accuracy of 89.8% in a binary classification, benign versus malignant breast cancer. © 2024 IEEE.

We introduce a method to evaluate the similarities between classes of objects based on the confusion matrices coming from the multi-class machine learning (ML) predictors that operate in the vector space generated by the classes. Operation in the confusion domain allows us to use the distance as evaluation metric of the closeness of the relevant properties carried by the classes. We applied the method to semiquantitatively evaluate the effects of X-ray and carbon ion radiation on cultured SW1353 chondrosarcoma cells with respect to the non-irradiated reference. We prove that it is possible to draw useful information on the strength of cells nuclei changes. © 2025, Politechnica University of Bucharest. All rights reserved.

The management of wastewater is a significant global concern that calls for innovative solutions to lessen its negative effects on the environment. Conventional techniques of treating wastewater need improvement in order to deal with newly discovered contaminants, which highlights the importance of providing precise estimates of process performance and resource requirements. The worsening water shortage situation requires a paradigm shift in which wastewater is viewed as a useful resource. It is possible to create an economy that is both sustainable and circular by treating and recycling wastewater, putting less pressure on freshwater supplies, and leaving as little of an environmental footprint as possible. This study investigates the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as software estimators in the treatment of wastewater, with a particular emphasis on predicting ammonium concentrations in effluent. In order to deal with imbalanced time-series data, the research introduces innovative data pretreatment strategies. These techniques include a Sliding Window protocol, Data Normalization, and a K-Fold training scheme. This illustrates the potential of ANNs to revolutionize wastewater treatment procedures and drive developments in this field. The suggested method demonstrates higher performance when estimating pollutant concentrations, showing the ability of ANNs to do so. © 2023 IEEE.
