The paper developed a block-wise approach for ICA algorithms which can improve the computational efficiency of ICA without the degradation of performance for the separation of biomedical signals. Source signals including electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyogram (EMG) and 60-Hz sinusoid are linearly mixed for experimental tests. The mean-square errors (MSE) between the original sources and the separated signals are calculated for the evaluation of separation performance. These results demonstrated that the proposed block-wise approach can achieve the desired separation performance of signals in a more efficient way.

In this paper, we propose an approach for the multi-objective control of sampled data systems that can be modeled as fuzzy discrete event systems (FDES). In our work, the choice of a “fuzzy” system representation is justified by the assumption of a controller realization that depends on various potentially imprecise sensor measurements. Our approach consists of three basic steps that are performed in each sampling instant. First, the current fuzzy state of the system is determined by a sensor evaluation. Second, the future fuzzy state is predicted for the possible control actions, and finally, a particular multi-objective weighting strategy allows to determine the control action to be applied. We demonstrate the features of our method by a mobile robot example.

A simulation approach was proposed to analyze the spectra of Doppler signals from stenoed artery in a steady flow, which can provide a useful guidance for detecting the formation understanding, diagnosis and treatment of many cardiovascular diseases. Firstly, by solving Navier-Stokes equations, the velocity distributions in the vessels with various stenoed degrees are calculated. Secondly, power spectral density (PSD) of the Doppler signals is estimated according to the relationship of velocity profiles and power spectral density. Finally, Doppler signals are generated using cosine-superposed methods. The results show that the spectra of Doppler signals are similar to those found in practice. Therefore, the proposed approach is useful for simulating the spectra of Doppler ultrasound signals from stenoed artery in a steady flow.

An algorithm for hybrid optimal control is proposed that varies the discrete state sequence based on gradient information during the search for an optimal trajectory. The algorithm is developed for hybrid systems with partitioned state space. It uses a version of the hybrid minimum principle that allows optimal trajectories to pass through intersections of switching manifolds, which enables the algorithm to vary the sequence. Consequently, the combinatorial complexity of former algorithms can be avoided, since not each possible sequence has to be investigated separately anymore. The convergence of the algorithm is proven and a numerical example demonstrates the efficiency of the algorithm.

The hybrid minimum principle (HMP) gives necessary conditions to be satisfied for optimal solutions of a hybrid dynamical system. In particular, the HMP accounts for autonomous switching between discrete states that occurs whenever the trajectory hits switching manifolds. In this paper, the existing HMP is extended for hybrid systems with partitioned state space to provide necessary conditions for optimal trajectories that pass through an intersection of switching manifolds. This extension is especially useful for the numerical solution of hybrid optimal control problems as it allows for algorithms with significant reduction of computational complexity. Algorithms based on previous versions of the HMP solve separate optimal control problems for each possible sequence of discrete states. The extension enables us to consider the optimal sequence as subject of optimal control that is varied and finally determined during a single optimization run. A first numerical result illustrates the effectiveness of an algorithm based on the extended HMP.

Time-triggered periodic control implementations are over provisioned for many execution scenarios in which the states of the controlled plants are close to equilibrium. To address this inefficient use of computation resources, researchers have proposed self-triggered control approaches in which the control task computes its execution deadline at runtime based on the state and dynamical properties of the controlled plant. The potential advantages of this control approach cannot, however, be achieved without adequate online resource-management policies. This paper addresses scheduling of multiple self-triggered control tasks that execute on a uniprocessor platform, where the optimization objective is to find trade-offs between the control performance and CPU usage of all control tasks. Our experimental results show that efficiency in terms of control performance and reduced CPU usage can be achieved with the heuristic proposed in this paper.

In this paper, we show that by using two adaptive neural networks (NNs), each of which is tailored for a specific task, the tracking performance of the hard-disk-drive (HDD) actuator can be significantly improved. The first NN utilizes accelerometer signal to detect external vibrations and compensates for its effect on HDD position via feedforward action. The second NN is designed to compensate for pivot friction. The appealing advantage of the NN compensators is that the design does not involve any information on the plant, sensor, disturbance dynamics, and friction model. The stability of the proposed scheme is analyzed by the Lyapunov criterion. Experimental results show that the tracking performance of the HDDs can be improved significantly with the use of the NN compensators as compared to the case without compensation. © 2009 IEEE.

In this paper, the stabilization problems of a class of new hyperchaotic systems with fully unknown parameters are concerned. Based on the adaptive control idea, two novel adaptive state feedback controllers are designed to implement the asymptotic stabilization of this kind of new hyperchaotic system by choosing appropriate controller structure and parametric updating law, respectively. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive control method is verified by simulation results.

This paper considers the generalized synchronization problems of two different hyperchaotic systems with unknown parameters. By denoting the synchronization error signals as the difference between the state variables of the drive system and the state variables of the response system, the hyperchaotic synchronization problem is transformed into the stabilization control problem of the origin of the synchronization error system. Based on the Lyapunov stability, a new adaptive synchronization controller is designed and the asymptotic stability of the origin of the synchronization error system is proved, simulation results illustrate the correctness of the proposed generalized synchronization method.
