An important issue in the analysis of two-dimensional electrophoresis images is the detection and quantification of protein spots. The main challenges in the segmentation of 2DGE images are to separate overlapping protein spots correctly and to find the abundance of weak protein spots. To enable comparison of protein patterns between different samples, it is necessary to match the patterns so that homologous spots are identified. In this paper we describe a new robust technique to segment and model the different spots present in the gels. The watershed segmentation algorithm is modified to handle the problem of over segmentation by initially partitioning the image to mosaic regions using the composition of fuzzy relations. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to overcome the over segmentation problem associated with the available algorithms.

Model Predictive Direct Torque control (MPDTC) is a recent computational control methodology that combines the merits of Model Predictive control (MPC) with the ones of Direct Torque control (DTC). Specifically, with respect to standard DTC, the converter's switching frequency and/or losses are considerably reduced, while at the same time the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) levels of the phase currents and the torque are improved. Moreover, DTC's favorable dynamic and robustness properties are preserved. This paper presents an MPDTC scheme for a permanent magnet synchronous motor that achieves long prediction horizons in the range of up to 150 time-steps through the use of extrapolation and bounds. A discrete-time internal controller model of the drive system is derived from the physical equations. Simulation results for a three-level voltage source inverter indicate that such an MPDTC scheme, compared to an industry standard controller, is capable of reducing the switching losses and the switching frequency by up to 50%, and the torque THD by 25%, while leaving the current THD unchanged.

We consider the problem of controlling marginally stable linear systems using bounded control inputs for networked control settings in which the communication channel between the remote controller and the system is unreliable. We assume that the states are perfectly observed, but the control inputs are transmitted over a noisy communication channel. Under mild hypotheses on the noise introduced by the control communication channel and large enough control authority, we construct a control policy that renders the state of the closed-loop system mean-square bounded.

This paper presents an efficient IrisCode classifier, built from phase features which uses AdaBoost for the selection of Gabor wavelets bandwidths. The final iris classifier consists of a weighted contribution of weak classifiers. As weak classifiers we use 3-split decision trees that identify a candidate based on the Levenshtein distance between phase vectors of the respective iris images. Our experiments show that the Levenshtein distance has better discrimination in comparing IrisCodes than the Hamming distance. Our process also differs from existing methods because the wavelengths of the Gabor filters used, and their final weights in the decision function, are chosen from the robust final classifier, instead of being fixed and/or limited by the programmer, thus yielding higher iris recognition rates. A pyramidal strategy for cascading filters with increasing complexity makes the system suitable for realtime operation.

By continuing to use fossil fuels we are bound to pollute the atmosphere, and consequently, unwanted greenhouse and climate change effects will come to dominate every part of the earth. Wind power energy represents an interesting alternative to traditional forms of obtaining energy. However, the efficiency of wind power strongly depends on the control methods that play a significant role in eliminating the perturbing factors, decreasing the structural loads and increasing the amount and quality of the energy that is produced. A design of a model based control algorithm for a horizontal wind turbine is proposed. In a model-based control approach, increased model accuracy implies reduced uncertainty. The paper will include an analysis of the advantages that may arise from using such a control technique and also will focus on the robustness of the closed loop system.

control of the networked control systems is a crucial challenge. In the environment of shared communication media, data may be randomly delayed or even lost. As the shared communication links are used in the critical infrastructure systems, the problem becomes even more important. As opposed to network compensation, solutions presented in the paper integrate network with the controlled plant. The proposed networked control system employs the model predictive control technology and is based on the buffer in the actuator. Stability of the presented solution used to control a linear discrete time system is analyzed. A simulation example is also provided.

This paper is concerned with the investigation of robust performance of linear tracking controllers affected by unmodelled delays acting in the loop. The incentive comes from the area of Networked control System (NCS) where the inevitable network-induced (transmission) delays are either time-varying or constant. The main contribution (based on extensive simulation work rather than strict mathematical proof) is that the tracking performance of (typical or more sophisticated) linear tracking control laws is drastically reduced when applied to NCS. The provided simulation results (i) demonstrate the impact of the network-induced delays on the tracking performance of single-input single-output NCS, (ii) provide initial guidelines for the tuning of the controllers and (iii) pave the road for further work to be done.
