Mining ventilation is an interesting example of a large scale system with high environmental impact where advanced control strategies can bring major improvements. Indeed, one of the first objectives of modern mining industry is to fulfill environmental specifications [1] during the ore extraction and crushing, by optimizing the energy consumption or the production of polluting agents. The mine electric consumption was 4 % of total industrial electric demand in the US in 1994 (6 % in 2007 in South Africa) and 90 % of it was related to motor system energy [2]. Another interesting figure is given in [3] where it is estimated that the savings associated with global control strategies for fluid systems (pumps, fans and compressors) represent approximately 20 % of the total manufacturing motor system energy savings. This motivates the development of new control strategies for large scale aerodynamic processes based on appropriate automation and a global consideration of the system. More specifically, the challenge in this work is focused on the mining ventilation since as much as 50 % or more of the energy consumed by the mining process may go into the ventilation (including heating the air). It is clear that investigating automatic control solutions and minimizing the amount of pumped air to save energy consumption (proportional to the cube of airflow quantity [4]) is of great environmental and industrial interest. © 2009 IEEE.

Steel making is known as a complex manufacturing industrial process. Automation of the process represents a challenge. Empirical mathematical modeling of the process was used to design mill equipment, ensure productivity and service quality. This modeling approach shows many problems associated to complexity and time consumption. Soft computing techniques show significant modeling capabilities on handling complex nonlinear systems modeling. In this paper, we explore the use of Takagi-Sugeno (TS) technique to develop fuzzy models for the Hot-Rolling industrial nonlinear process. We propose three models for the rolling force, torque and slab temperature. A set of rules and membership functions which represents the dynamical relationship between the input and output of these models shall be presented. The performance of the fuzzy models will be compared to the known empirical models for the hot rolling system. Experimental data measured from the Ere˜gli Iron and Steel Factory in Turkey shall be used for the verification of the model outstanding performance.

The indirect adaptive regulation of unknown nonlinear dynamical systems under the presence of dynamic and parameter uncertainties, is considered in this paper. The method is based on a new Neuro-Fuzzy Dynamical Systems defination named Fuzzy-Recurrent High Order Neural Network (F-RHONN), which however takes into account the fuzzy output partitions of the initial fuzzy dynamical system (FDS) operating in conjunction with appropriate HONNFs, that approximates the fuzzy rules. The proposed scheme does not require a-priori experts' information on the number and type of input variable membership functions making it less vulnerable to initial design assumptions. Once the system is identified around an operation point, it is regulated to zero adaptively. Weight updating laws for the involved HONNFs are provided, which guarantee that under the presence of 'small' dynamic uncertainties both the identification error and the system states reach zero exponentially fast, while keeping all signals in the closed loop bounded. The existence of the control signal is always assured by introducing a method of parameter hopping, which is incorporated in the weight updating law. The applicability is tested on the Lorenz model, where it is shown that by following the proposed procedure one can obtain asymptotic regulation quite well in the presence of unmodeled dynamics.

The high performance mobile robots nowadays should operate themselves in many applications. One attractive task is to build the map, meanwhile estimate their poses for the locomotion in real time. The simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technique is once technique which can solve this demand. The selecting sensors are essential factors for generation the high accuracy output. This paper present, the applying a new 3D sensor namely the photonic mixer devices (PMD) provides a real-time capturing of surrounding volume. However the output of PMD is very excellent depth metric, to recognize the complex objects is still faultily because of the low resolution output (64 × 48 pixels). The 2D high resolution camera inspires to compensate the PMD camera's drawback. The high resolution image output is registered on the 3D volume. The visual input from the 2D camera does not delivers only high resolution texture data on 3D volume but it is also used for object recognition. Finally, the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm is used for the image registration in order to yield the real time 3D data frames registration.

The simulation of congestion control algorithms of TCP networks is discussed in this paper. Simulation is a widespread procedure for testing and understanding how real systems evolve. Internet has a great impact in our society. Everyone wants fast and reliable links, but sometimes congestion happens because the network delay and the number of users fluctuate from one moment to the next. There are different approaches for dealing with congestion: classical (such as drop tail or RED) or process control techniques (PID, predictive control or fuzzy). Future engineers need to learn about this topic. So it seems logical to use simulation, but which tools should we use? This paper presents a comparison using three different simulation programs: Matlab, EcosimPro and ns-2. Results show that, depending on what we want, we should choose different tools.

Abstract In this paper Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is used for detecting faults in a simulated wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Diagnosis tasks are treated using Fisher discriminant analysis (FDA). Both techniques are multivariate statistical techniques used in multivariate statistical process control (MSPC) and fault detection and isolation (FDI) perspectives. PCA reduces the dimensionality of the original historical data by projecting it onto a lower dimensionality space. It obtains the principal causes of variability in a process. If some of these causes change, it can be due to a fault in the process. FDA provides an optimal lower dimensional representation in terms of a discriminant between classes of data, where, in this context of fault diagnosis, each class corresponds to data collected during a specific and known fault. A discriminant function is applied to diagnose faults using data collected from the plant.

Learning system is a method to approximate an underlying function from a finite observation data. Since batch learning has a disadvantage in dealing with large data set, online learning is proposed to prevent the computational expensive. Iterative method called Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) is applied to solve for the underlying function on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs). To use SGD in time-varying environment, a learning rate is adjusted by Stochastic Meta Descent (SMD). The simulation results show that SMD can follow shifting and switching target function whereas the size of model can be restricted using sparse solution.

The paper deals with a general form of a mathematical model of a three-phase electric circuit characteristics. A form of the model with using dimensionless variables is discussed. In general form of the linear AC circuit, the steady-state circuit characteristics are nonlinear functions of circuit elements and signals parameters. The linearized model of the asymmetrical circuit with linear loads is derived in matrix-vector notation. The model consists of sensivity function of the circuit-phase currents versus load voltages, supply voltages, phase inductances and supply voltages frequency described analytically in form of matrices or vector. As reference the symmetric (balanced) three-phase circuit was used. An example of application of this model to the determination of the inductances of the circuit is given.
