Availability of large full-text document collections in electronic form has created a need for tools and techniques that assist users in organizing these collections. Document clustering is one of the popular methods used for this purpose. In this paper, we propose the neural network based document clustering method by using a hierarchically organized network built up from independent Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) neural networks. We present clustering results using the REUTERS corpus and show an improvement in clustering performance using both entropy and F-measure as evaluation measures.

When the process uncertainty size increases, even linear minimum phase systems must sacrifice desirable aggressive feedback control benefits to avoid an excessive ‘cost of feedback’, while preserving the robust stability. With a suitable uncertainty division and a QFT controller-prefilter to command each uncertainty subset inside a controller-scheduler structure, it is possible to enhance the feedback tracking performance without an excessive bandwidth. To preserve the robust stability from any failure in the switching, each controller is designed to be stable in the whole uncertainty domain, and as accurate in command tracking as desired in its uncertainty subset.

In this paper a new robust steepest-descent algorithm for discrete-time iterative learning control is introduced for plant models with multiplicative uncertainty. A theoretical analysis of the algorithm shows that if a tuning parameter in the algorithm is selected to be sufficiently large, the algorithm will result in monotonic convergence if the plant uncertainty satisfies a positivity condition. This is a major improvement when compared to the standard steepest-descent algorithm, which lacks a mechanism for finding a balance between convergence speed and robustness. Experimental work on a gantry robot is performed to demonstrate that the algorithm results in near perfect tracking in the limit.

All of the new results obtained are based on analysis of the Fornasini-Marchesini state space model with delays and the resulting conditions are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). A collection of one or more devices, each described by its digital device manual and reachable over a network, is a ConnectedSpace. A set of safety policies may be enforced on a ConnectedSpace to ensure the safety of the environment in which the ConnectedSpace is deployed. The enforcement of these safety policies by one or more safely controllers governs the behavior of the devices within the ConnectedSpace. We propose a policy-based partitioning scheme for synthesizing k distributed safety controllers such that: (a) each device is guaranteed to be controlled by no more than two controllers, and (b) each policy is guaranteed to be enforced by exactly one controller. We present an experimental evaluation of our scheme. The experimental results show that the scheme is scalable with respect to the number of devices and the number of policies. We also show how safety controllers that are correct with respect to the policies, are synthesized using the theory of supervisory control.
