The primary objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the binary information on the presence or absence of gene expression can sufficiently capture the inherent heterogeneity within single-cell RNA se quencing (scRNA-seq) data. This hypothesis posits that even without detailed expression levels, valuable insights about cellular diversity can be obtained. Utilizing this method can be particularly advantageous when analyzing large datasets, a common scenario in the field of scRNA-seq. In this paper, we evaluate clustering performance and cluster separability of a variety of model-based algorithms and distance-based methods to an alyze both expression level data and threshold-encoded binarized data. We examined the performance of the Bernoulli-mixture model and Gaussian-mixture model. These were compared against traditional clustering techniques such as hierarchical clustering, K-means, and the Louvain algorithm on a range of scRNA-seq datasets. Our findings reveal that mixture models exhibit a lower dependence on the specific dataset compared to distance-based methods. Mixture models, particularly, demonstrate greater efficacy in accurately estimat ing the number of clusters present within the data. Among analyzed algorithms, the Bernoulli-mixture model stands out, outperforming distance-based approaches in several key aspects. Binary data, presence/absence of gene expression, seem to be indeed adequate to capture the heterogeneity of scRNA-seq data when clus tering with methods specifically designed for binary datasets. The implications of this finding are significant, as it opens up new possibilities for simplifying data analysis in scRNA-seq studies without compromising the accuracy of the results. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS– Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

In this survey, we examine how making emerged as an interdisciplinary arena of scholarship, research and design that connects entrepreneurs, designers, researchers, critical theorists, historians, anthropologists, computer scientists and engineers. HCI is one among many other fields and domains that has declared having a stake in making. And yet, a lot of what and who defines making is happening outside the familiar research laboratory or design studio. We take this article as an opportunity to reflect on HCI's relationship to making and how this relationship has changed over the last years. Making, we argue, presents HCI with the opportunity to question and revisit underlying principles and long-held aspirations and values of the field. Exactly because HCI and making share some fundamental ideals such as user empowerment and the democratization of participation and technology production, making confronts us with both the potential and the unintended consequences of our own work. © 2017 J. This paper discusses gradients of search values with a parameter vector θ in an evaluation function. Recent learning methods for evaluation functions in computer shogi are based on minimization of an objective function with search results. The gradients of the evaluation function at the leaf position of a principal variation (PV) are used to make an easy substitution of the gradients of the search result. By analyzing the variations of the min-max value, we show (1) when the min-max value is partially differentiable and (2) how the substitution may introduce errors. Experiments on a shogi program with about a million parameters show how frequently such errors occur, as well as how effective the substitutions for parameter tuning are in practice. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The present article is focused on the improvement of the quality of engineering education of graduate students with a major in transport and mechanical engineering through the derivation of a numerical solution of the optimal control problem for payload swaying during crane boom slewing, formulated by Sakawa et al. For the first time, a numerical solution of Sakawa's problem has been derived with an application of *** freeware. The fundamental difference between this solution and Sakawa's is the imposition of a restrictive constraint on the allowable value of payload swaying during boom-driven payload motion. The solution derived by the authors for Sakawa's problem takes exact account of the restrictive constraints on the phase variables in contrast to Sakawa's model, where the restriction constraints on the phase variables have been approximated. The complex of authors-proposed computational algorithms was implemented with ***. The proposed open-code algorithms derive numerical data and computational plots, which enhance and expand students' knowledge about the dynamics of guided boom-driven payload swaying during rotary crane boom slewing. © SAGE Publications.

Multiresolution analysis of image data based on the novel m-channel linear-phase paraunitary filter banks (LP PUFBs) using quaternion multipliers are presented, which are aimed at finite-precision implementation. In the given paper the universal quaternion multiplier as a kernel of m-band wavelets analysis on combining the CORDIC algorithm with a lifting scheme is considered. Finally, the FPGA-based eight-channel linear phase paraunitary filter bank is validated by its application to image, in particular, to lossless-to-lossy coding. © 2013 IEEE.

The landscape of an objective function for supervised learning of evaluation functions is numerically investigated for a limited number of feature variables. Despite the importance of such learning methods, the properties of the objective function are still not well known because of its complicated dependence on millions of tree-search values. This paper shows that the objective function has multiple local minima and the global minimum point indicates reasonable feature values. Moreover, the function is continuous with a practically computable numerical accuracy. However, the function has non-partially differentiable points on the critical boundaries. It is shown that an existing iterative method is able to minimize the functions from random initial values with great stability, but it has the possibility to end up with a non-reasonable local minimum point if the initial random values are far from the desired values. Furthermore, the obtained minimum points are shown to form a funnel structure. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract structures of rectangular lattice with various edge conditions and neighborhoods play a key role in telecommunications, computing, nanotechnologies, and biological systems. For modeling rectangular structures, an infinite Petri net model has been developed and investigated. Based on the parametric specification of rectangular lattice models, an infinite system of linear homogenous equations has been derived. Using the earlier developed algorithm, a parametric solution of the system has been obtained, the solution contains all the positive components. Thus, the model is a p-invariant Petri net for any given size of square lattice. Consequently, we can use storage elements of limited capacity for practical implementations of a rectangular lattice structure. © 2020 IEEE.

3D object retrieval based on range image queries that represent partial views of real 3D objects is presented. The complete 3D models of the database are described by a set of panoramic views, and a Bag-of-Visual-Words model is built using SIFT features extracted from them. To address the problem of partial matching, we suggest a histogram computation scheme, on the panoramic views, that represents local information by taking into account spatial context. Furthermore, a number of optimization techniques are applied throughout the process for enhancing the retrieval performance. Its superior performance is shown by evaluating it against state-of-the-art methods on standard datasets. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Cultural objects and art works need ongoing conservation interventions in order to be available for the next generations. The most object-friendly analysis approaches are based on non-destructive techniques (NDTs) that allow both the materials characterisation as well as the decay detection of cultural artefacts. Non-destructive testing and evaluation includes the employment of several methods such as the well-established technique of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy with fibre optics (FORS). Such techniques produce output with multiple series of data for multiple different pigment used in objects. In this work, we present a data management solution that contributes with: 1) a library of known reference pigments/colours;2) a proposed pattern matching technique that allows the automatic classification of any new pigment. The experimental evaluation results show that the data processing proposed is effective. Feedback is particularly encouraging as it allows automation and therefore radically decreased time for pigment/colour matching and identification. © 2017 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
