Promoting Accurate Image Reconstruction via Synthetic Noise for Unsupervised Screw Anomaly Detection and Location

With residuals-based unsupervised models, defects can be detected using only normal samples, boosting both efficiency and practicality in industrial anomaly detection (AD) applications. While these approaches offer benefits, they also present challenges in detecting anomalies in cylindrical objects, such as imprecise image reconstruction and camera blind spots. As a result, this paper introduces ScrewNet, an unsupervised anomaly detection framework designed specifically for cylindrical objects like screws. To improve the accuracy of reconstruction in the AD network, the synthetic noise module and pair training approach are employed during the training stage. The synthetic noise module, utilizing one of the CycleGAN generators, produces defects that match real-world distributions, thereby enabling the AD network to extract valuable features while preserving image structure. The pair training approach is designed to enable the AD network to achieve accurate reconstruction using similar background input-output pairs. To tackle inspection blind spots problem, an efficient, cost-effective inspection system using multiple mirrors is developed for the inference stage. This approach enables effective anomaly detection across the entire 360-degree surface of the screw. In experiments, three different types of screw datasets containing both damaged and undamaged screws are provided. Numerous experiments demonstrate the superiority of our approach over several state-of-the-art (SOTA) unsupervised AD networks. For instance, ScrewNet outperforms baselines by 4 dB in average Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) for image reconstruction quality and by 32% in average Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (AUROC) for pixel-level anomaly segmentation. Additionally, image-level detection achieves 98.3% accuracy across the three screw datasets. The code is available at https://***/vitowen9580/ScrewNet. © 2025 IEEE.

Medical imaging, particularly chest X-rays (CXR), is a cornerstone in the diagnosis of lung diseases, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis and COVID-19, owing to its accessibility and effectiveness. However, the sheer volume of CXR images, especially during pandemics, combined with the complexity of subtle abnormalities, poses significant challenges for manual analysis. Lung segmentation plays a pivotal role in artificial intelligence-driven CXR analysis by isolating lung fields, which facilitates the detection of disease-affected regions. Recent advances in deep learning, particularly with attention mechanisms, have improved segmentation accuracy, but the performance of these models heavily depends on the selection of appropriate hyperparameters. This study investigates the impact of key hyperparameters—learning rate and number of epochs—on the performance of the dual-attention network (DANet) in lung segmentation tasks. DANet was tested on a CXR dataset from Qatar University and evaluated under four different hyperparameter configurations: 20 epochs with a learning rate of 0.001, 10 epochs with a learning rate of 0.001, 10 epochs with a learning rate of 0.0001 and 20 epochs with a learning rate of 0.0001. The model's performance was assessed using two widely recognised segmentation metrics: the Dice coefficient and Intersection over Union (IoU). The results indicated that higher learning rates and greater numbers of epochs lead to improved segmentation performance. Specifically, the DANet model achieved a Dice coefficient of 97.29 % and an IoU value of 94.74 %, demonstrating its effectiveness compared to other models. These findings highlight the importance of hyperparameter tuning in achieving high segmentation accuracy and demonstrate the potential of the DANet model to improve diagnostic workflows for CXR analysis. © 2025 The Authors

SPE’s Drilling Systems Automation Technical Section (DSATS) sponsors the Drillbotics® autonomous drilling contest to promote advanced learning at participating universities. Two groups worked separately to drill a directional well hands-free and to connect to a well model to detect/close in a kick. This paper consolidates the efforts of both teams. Team A, the directional drilling team from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Ghana, developed a virtual model that replicated full-scale directional drilling operations, facilitating the development and testing of innovative control schemes and automation strategies. Leveraging state-of-the-art drilling software, real-time data analytics, and advanced control systems, the project demonstrated the potential of automated drilling technologies across both the planning and execution phases of drilling projects. Team B, from Technical University Clausthal (TUC) in Germany, designed and built a mini-rig that included a working scaled version of a rotary steerable system (RSS) tool to steer a wellbore through a block of sandstone to reach two non-planer targets. The work incorporates machine learning techniques to evaluate downhole sensor data and improve steering signal input. The modular design of the second-generation surface actuation system offers a more compact and efficient solution than its predecessor. The control architecture and network protocols are analyzed, demonstrating network delays of under 2 msec using a refined second-generation translator setup. The achievements of both teams are important to the future of drilling automation, as their approaches could be used to verify and validate third-party app’s communications prior to field release on full-scale rigs. Operations and Maintenance (O&M) cost optimization in the nuclear energy industry is an imperative task for developing sustainable systems and efficient renewable technologies. We present a modular probabilistic framework for addressing maintenance scheduling challenges for small modular nuclear reactors using a Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) approach that monitors fatigue and performance in multiple subsystems of the reactors and provides a probabilistic assessment for potential failure events. The DBN framework fuses information from potential digital twins that assimilate real time data from several sensors with different time granularities in order to monitor and update thecurrentstate of knowledge aboutthestatus of several fatigue or performance criteria. Comprised of multi-modal digital twins (empirical, data- and physics-based twins), this DBN serves as a predictive framework forecasting the future state of specific reactor subsystems and enhancing decision-making capabilities associated with preventing system failure and minimizing the time and cost of maintenance events. The work presented in this paper is a holistic approach for monitoring and safeguarding complex, multi-component engineering systems where maintenance scheduling is critical and does not restrict itself to nuclear environments. EPEE: Towards Efficient and Effective Foundation Models in Biomedicine

Foundation models, including language models, e.g., GPT, and vision models, e.g., CLIP, have significantly advanced numerous biomedical tasks. Despite these advancements, the high inference latency and the "overthinking" issues in model inference impair the efficiency and effectiveness of foundation models, thus limiting their application in real-time clinical settings. To address these challenges, we proposed EPEE (Entropy- and Patience-based Early Exiting), a novel hybrid strategy designed to improve the inference efficiency of foundation models. The core idea was to leverage the strengths of entropy-based and patience-based early exiting methods to overcome their respective weaknesses. To evaluate EPEE, we conducted experiments on three core biomedical tasks—classification, relation extraction, and event extraction—using four foundation models (BERT, ALBERT, GPT-2, and ViT) across twelve datasets, including clinical notes and medical images. The results showed that EPEE significantly reduced inference time while maintaining or improving accuracy, demonstrating its adaptability to diverse datasets and tasks. EPEE addressed critical barriers to deploying foundation models in healthcare by balancing efficiency and effectiveness. It potentially provided a practical solution for real-time clinical decision-making with foundation models, supporting reliable and efficient workflows. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Relip: Reliable in-Band Parallel Communication for Magnetic MIMO Wireless Power Transfer System

In magnetic resonant coupling (MRC) based wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, receiver (RX) feedback communication is promising to enhance the capability and efficiency of the system. Although some studies have explored in-band implementations with low overhead costs, it has not been comprehensively investigated. In this paper, we propose Relip, a Reliable layer-level in-band parallel feedback communication mechanism for MIMO MRC-WPT systems, which addresses the impact of RX-RX couplings (i.e., non-negligible interference from strong couplings and positive effects of relay phenomenon), and provides a theoretical analysis of communication reliability. Technically, we first devise an On-Off based two-phase modulation mechanism to achieve RX identification and dependency detection under relay phenomenon. Then, we utilize observed channel decomposability to collect group-level power transfer channel conditions for eliminating the interference caused by strong RX-RX couplings. Furthermore, we perform RX selection to optimize the trade-off between communication reliability and time overhead. We design and implement the Relip prototype and conduct extensive experiments. The results validate the effectiveness of our mechanism, i.e., Relip can provide ≥99% average decoding accuracy for concurrent feedback communication of 14 devices, achieving an 18.31% improvement compared to the state-of-the-art solution. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Given the critical role of zeroing neural networks (ZNN) in various fields and the practical demand for models in effectively resisting real-time noise, this study introduces a novel anti-noise integral zeroing neural network (AN-IZNN) model alongside its enhanced counterpart (EAN-IZNN), for the applications of matrix problem solving. Theoretical analysis demonstrates their ability to achieve convergence even under different noise conditions. Both theoretical analyses and simulation validations highlight the superior performance of the proposed models over existing neural network models. Notably, the root mean square error of the proposed AN-IZNN and EAN-IZNN models is reduced by 92.6249% and 91.4178%, respectively, compared to scenarios without the proposed method, demonstrating the effectiveness of the solution. © 2025

Urban traffic congestion necessitates innovative monitoring and control solutions. This study leverages UAV footage and deep learning techniques to classify and analyze traffic density levels autonomously. By employing a pre-trained ResN et50 model enhanced with additional layers, the research optimizes traffic density classification using UAV-captured data. A custom dataset of traffic scenarios in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, was developed, incorporating diverse conditions through advanced normalization and data augmentation techniques to improve resilience and robustness. The modified ResN et50 model demonstrated high classification accuracy across varied traffic scenarios, validating its reliability and scalability for real-world applications. Key findings include the superior adaptability of UAV-based monitoring for real-time urban traffic assessment and the enhanced classification precision achieved through model optimization. This research underscores the potential of integrating UAV technology with deep learning to advance urban traffic management and foster more efficient urban planning strategies.

Adapting Rule Representation With Four-Parameter Beta Distribution for Learning Classifier Systems

Rule representations significantly influence the search capabilities and decision boundaries within the search space of Learning Classifier Systems (LCSs). However, it is very difficult to choose an appropriate rule representation for each problem. Additionally, some problems benefit from using different representations for different subspaces within the input space. Thus, an adaptive mechanism is needed to choose an appropriate rule representation for each rule in LCSs. This article introduces a flexible rule representation using a four-parameter beta distribution and integrates it into a fuzzy-style LCS. The four-parameter beta distribution can form various function shapes, and this flexibility enables our LCS to automatically select appropriate representations for different subspaces. Our rule representation can represent crisp/fuzzy decision boundaries in various boundary shapes, such as rectangles and bells, by controlling four parameters, compared to the standard representations such as trapezoidal ones. Leveraging this flexibility, our LCS is designed to adapt the appropriate rule representation for each subspace. Moreover, our LCS has a generalization bias to produce as many crisp rules as possible. Experimental results on real-world classification tasks show that our LCS significantly outperformed LCSs with popular rule representations in test classification accuracy on up to 17 of the 25 datasets tested. © 1997-2012 IEEE.
