Visually impaired individuals face difficulties in public transportation, especially in recognizing bus numbers. Though existing image captioning method can provide some bus scene information via voice broadcasting, precisely recognizing bus number while analyzing complex scenes remains challenges. To overcome this bottleneck, we propose a novel Text based Depth-aware image Captioning network (TDCnet) that facilitates a deeper understanding of the spatial relationships and geometric configurations of objects within bus scenes. Specially, we first carefully construct a new real-world dataset of bus scene integrated with bus number of LED strobe effect, to ensure generality and representations in practice. Then, we incorporate the depth information into the object and optical character recognition (OCR) feature for exploiting the spatial geometric relationships and capturing high-level semantic information. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate the necessity of constructing the Buscap dataset by comparing it with the public Textcap dataset. Besides, the comparison with other competing benchmark models verifies the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed TDCnet method. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a system of interconnected sensors that can gather environmental information. On the other hand, data redundancy is a common source of problems with WSNs. The literature presents a plethora of approaches. Despite these mechanisms’ best efforts, most current systems still need help with difficulties like noise, redundancy, or application specificity. Thus, we proposed an algorithm to overcome all the problems with redundant and highly correlated data. The longest common subsequence (LCSS)-enabled sliding window algorithm can resolve issues in constrained networks related to energy conservation and congestion control. The proposed method exhibits remarkable performance on multiple benchmark datasets. According to the result analysis, the suggested technique can outperform its equivalents for a range of data sets by about 32%. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Telerehabilitation systems leveraging depth video analysis provide an effective solution for remote physiotherapy, particularly for individuals with physical disabilities. This study presents an advanced exercise classification framework that integrates multi-modal feature extraction and attention-based transformation to enhance rehabilitation monitoring. The proposed pipeline begins with depth image preprocessing, followed by human detection using a pre-trained Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG)-Support Vector Machine (SVM) model. The human silhouette is segmented using the GrabCut algorithm, enabling robust region-of-interest extraction. We propose a novel Lightweight Two-tier Key Body Point Detection (LT-KBPD) algorithm to efficiently and accurately identify key skeletal points, which are then used to extract both static and dynamic kinematic features. In parallel, silhouette-based analysis is performed, where shape descriptors, dense optical flow, Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM)-based body part segmentation, and contour analysis extract spatial and motion-related features. The extracted feature sets are fused into a comprehensive feature vector and further refined using an attention-based transformation mechanism to highlight salient features relevant to exercise classification. Finally, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network is employed to model temporal dependencies and classify exercises with high accuracy. The proposed approach is validated on three benchmark depth-video datasets: Kimore, K3DA and MEx - Multi-modal Exercise Dataset, achieving classification accuracies of 92.19%, 91.35%, and 85.51%, respectively. These results demonstrate the system’s effectiveness in accurately recognizing rehabilitation exercises for individuals with physical disabilities. Future work aims to enhance the adaptability of the system through personalized rehabilitation feedback and improved temporal modeling techniques. © 2013 IEEE.

Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain due to adversative or challenging situations. A human may undergo bad life experiences or events, and it is a significant issue to be dealt in today's society. It comes as a result of family situations, health concerns, work environments and people's behavior among other things. It affects people of various ages, including children, teenagers, middle-aged people and senior citizens. It has serious consequences affecting human body and life. These problems can be addressed by detecting mental stress at an early stage. The main goal of the propounded system is to identify human stress using a pre-trained Mini-Xception model. Additional measures such as eye moments, mouth activity and head motion are employed for determining the level of human stress. FER2013 dataset is used and the system is tested for all kinds of emotions. Human stress level is experimented by capturing video using webcam. From the experimental outcomes, it is evident that the proposed system offers better performance in terms of Precision, Accuracy, Specificity and Sensitivity in contrast to traditional methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

This work addresses bi-objective hybrid flow shop scheduling problems considering consistent sublots (Bi-HFSP_CS). The objectives are to minimize the makespan and total energy consumption. First, the Bi-HFSP_CS is formalized, followed by the establishment of a mathematical model. Second, enhanced version of the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithms is proposed for tackling the Bi-HFSP_CS. Then, fourteen local search operators are employed to search for better solutions. Two different O-learning tactics are developed to embed into the ABC algorithm to guide the selection of operators throughout the iteration process. Finally, the proposed tactics are assessed for their efficacy through a comparison of the ABC algorithm, its three variants, and three effective algorithms in resolving 95 instances of 35 different problems. The experimental results and analysis showcase that the enhanced ABC algorithm combined with O-learning (QABC1) demonstrates as the top performer for solving concerned problems. This study introduces a novel approach to solve the Bi-HFSP_CS and illustrates its efficacy and superior competitive strength, offering beneficial perspectives for exploration and research in relevant domains. © 2021 TUP.

Fractal dimension analysis for improved decision-making in non-stationary multi-arm bandit problems: a machine learning approach

In this research, we propose a novel approach to addressing the exploration–exploitation dilemma in multi-armed bandit (MAB) algorithms using fractal dimensions. The fractal dimension is used in the algorithms to represent the reward distributions of arms which represents the uncertainty of the arm in receiving the reward. The fractal dimension of the reward distribution is implemented in the most popular MAB optimization algorithms, such as Epsilon-Greedy, Upper Confidence Bound (UCB), Exponential-weight algorithm for Exploration and Exploitation (EXP3), and Thompson Sampling in this study. The algorithm prefers to choose arm with the least fractal dimension, as a lower fractal dimension represents less uncertainty of the arm. The performance of the fractal-enhanced MAB optimization algorithms is compared with traditional algorithms in non-stationary environments with various numbers of arms. The proposed approach provides a novel way to quantify and utilize the uncertainty of each arm in MAB problems.

In response to the escalating demand for electricity, the aging process and inherent failures in power lines have become unavoidable challenges in their operational integrity. This research addresses the imperative need for a robust method to detect damage in power insulator disc images, introducing a novel feature extraction technique grounded in color intensity profile transformation and ensemble learning. For the purposes of the research, a specific dataset was developed based on publicly available images of power insulators. The collection consists of 9232 images of insulator discs which included 2184 images of damaged discs. The discernible damages include breakages and burnouts. Two distinct analysis variants were employed. In the first variant (V1), two classification groups were selected: disc with damages and disc without damages. In the second variant (V2), three classification groups were selected: discs without damage, broken discs, and burnout discs. The described research was divided into two successive stages. In the first of them (S1), the transformed color intensity profiles for the prepared data set were built and various machine learning models for their classification were trained and evaluated. In the next stage (S2), previously developed, highest efficient machine learning models, were used to make the detection of various damaged types of overhead line insulator discs. For the first stage of research high-performance results and a high value of the F1 score parameters were obtained (F1 score = 0.999 for the first variant (S1V1) and F1 score = 0.992 for the second variant (S1V2). In the second stage of research and the first variant (S2V1), the highest result of the F1 score was 0.932 and for the second variant (S2V2) F1 score was 0.930. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

AFuNet: an attention-based fusion network to classify texts in a resource-constrained language

In the era of widespread Internet use and extensive social media interaction, the digital realm is accumulating vast amounts of unstructured text data. This unstructured data often contain undesirable information, necessitating time-consuming manual classification efforts. An intelligent text classification system capable of automatically categorizing digitized texts based on semantic meaning is crucial. However, this task is particularly challenging for low-resource languages like Bengali due to a shortage of annotated corpora, issues with out-of-vocabulary words, lack of domain-specific hyperparameter tuning, limited ability to extract generalized text features, and class imbalances within the corpus. AFuNet: an attention-based fusion network to classify texts in a resource-constrained language. AFuNet undergoes a comprehensive four-phase experimental process, including baseline model evaluation and hyperparameter tuning, late fusion and model selection, attention-based early fusion and model identification, and an ablation study with impact analysis. Fine-tuned based on five Bengali text classification corpora, AFuNet achieves impressive accuracies: 96.60 ± 0.2 (BTCC11), 85.37 ± 0.2 (OSBC), 97.35 ± 0.2 (BARD), 93.74 ± 0.2 (IndicNLP), and 96.51 ± 0.2 (ProthomAlo). In comparison with previous state-of-the-art models on these corpora, AFuNet demonstrates significant accuracy improvements ranging from 0.54% to 4.49%, showcasing its effectiveness in advancing text classification capabilities for the Bengali language. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Leukemia, a malignant disease characterized by the rapid proliferation of specific types of white blood cells (WBC), has prompted increased interest in leveraging automatic WBC classification system. This study presents the design of a robust WBC classification system, integrating deep learning with microscopic image analysis. The proposed classification model is designed to categorize blood cells into four distinct groups: eosinophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and neutrophil. The study employs a Kaggle image dataset for comprehensive learning. The dataset comprises 12,500 microscopic images used to categorize the four blood cell groups. To enhance performance and reduce the likelihood of overfitting, transfer learning techniques are employed. Six deep transfer learning models namely VGG16, ResNet50, AlexNet, MobileNet, GoogLeNet, and EfficientNetBO are used for feature extraction and classification. The results of the experiments show that VGG16 and MobileNet demonstrated enhancements compared to other pre-trained models when evaluated on both augmented and original datasets. A diverse set of evaluation criteria was employed to thoroughly assess the effectiveness of medical image classification. Notably, the VGG16 and MobileNet models accurately predicted Lymphocytes and Monocytes with a 100% accuracy rate, and Eosinophil and Neutrophil with rates of 99.35% and 99.81%, respectively. This research work empower medical practitioners, particularly in the field of pathology and hematology by providing advanced tools for accurate blood cell classification. The proposed VGG16 and MobileNet models hold promise for simplifying WBC classification, improving decision-making processes, and ultimately advancing patient care in the medical domain. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Lower limb rehabilitation robots can help to improve the locomotor capabilities of patients experiencing gait impairments and help medical workers by reducing strain on them. However, since commercially available exoskeletons are expensive and there is a lack of number of physiotherapists many patients are still not able to get proper rehabilitation training. The closed-loop linkage mechanisms have recently drawn much attention in the realization of gait rehabilitation robots. Such mechanisms are affordable and capable of providing suitable trajectories for gait training therapy. In this work, we have proposed a fully operational one degree-of-freedom mechanism which can generate complex naturalistic lower limb trajectories. Although in theory, it is assumed that the constant speed applied at the input crank is sufficient to control the system, in reality, the external forces exerted by human legs and the inertia of the links can greatly alter the rotational velocity at the crank, which may negatively affect the training process. Therefore, we have explored the performance of a deep reinforcement learning-based control algorithm designed to regulate the speed of the input crank to reach satisfactory performance needed for gait rehabilitation training. Experimental evaluations with healthy human subjects were conducted to demonstrate that the mechanism is capable of directing lower limbs on naturalistic gait trajectories with a required walking speed. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.
