Federated learning (FL) is an emerging privacy preserving machine learning protocol that allows multiple devices to collaboratively train a shared global model without revealing their private local data. Nonparametric models like gradient boosting decision trees (GBDTs) have been commonly used in FL for vertically partitioned data. However, all these studies assume that all the data labels are stored on only one client, which may be unrealistic for real-world applications. Therefore, in this article, we propose a secure vertical FL framework, named privacy-preserving vertical federated learning system over distributed labels (PIVODL), to train GBDTs with data labels distributed on multiple devices. Both homomorphic encryption and differential privacy are adopted to prevent label information from being leaked through transmitted gradients and leaf values. Our experimental results show that both information leakage and model performance degradation of the proposed PIVODL are negligible. Impact Statement - Federated learning is a distributed machine learning framework proposed for privacy preservation. Most federated learning algorithms work on horizontally partitioned data, with only a few exceptions considering vertically partitioned data that is widely seen in the real world. However, existing vertical federated learning makes an unrealistic assumption that data labels are distributed on only one device and no research has been reported so far that considers data labels distributed on multiple client devices. The PIVODL framework reported in this article allows us to build a secure vertical federated XGBoost system, in which the labels may distributed either on one device or on multiple devices, making it possible to apply federated learning to a wider range of real-world problems. © 2020 IEEE.

Technology has influenced the hospitality industry, and the Internet of Things (IoT) has become a focus for sustainability, revenue growth, and problem-solving. This systematic review examined the opportunities and challenges of implementing IoT technology for a sustainable hospitality. Through a thorough analysis of 28 studies, we found that IoT technology has great potential to address sustainability issues in the hospitality industry. However, there are still significant challenges that need to be addressed for the successful implementation of IoT technology in the hospitality industry. Overall, this study highlights the potential of IoT technology to revolutionize the hospitality industry and make it more sustainable. Further research is needed to address the challenges of IoT implementation in the hospitality industry and to evaluate the effectiveness of IoT technology in achieving sustainability goals. © 2023 IEEE.

In this study, operational strategies are investigated for an air-based photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) system integrated with a domestic air-to-water heat pump. The PV-T system is used to simultaneously generate electricity and heat ambient air, which serves as the heat source for the heat pump. By utilising a variable-speed fan to regulate airflow, the PV-T system outlet temperature is adjusted, and the focus is on how different outlet temperatures impact the PVT system electrical and thermal efficiency, heat pump performance, and overall electricity requirements for heating. The performance of the integrated system is assessed for a case study of a household application in north Italy. The optimal PV-T outlet temperature is found to be between 30 - 35 °C, resulting in only 5% less electricity production than an equivalent PV system with equal nominal electricity capacity, while reducing overall electricity required for heating by over 15% compared to PV-integrated heat pumps. © 2024 IEEE.

To minimize the disturbance of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) cutterhead on the surrounding rock during the coal mine roadway excavation process and ensure that the cutterhead rotation speed achieves fast tracking performance with minimal overshoot, we propose a direct adaptive robust control method for the cutterhead rotation speed hydraulic system based on inversion design. This method considers the strong disturbances such as loads and motion affecting the cutterhead hydraulic drive system, as well as the uncertainties in the cutterhead model. We establish the nonlinear model of the cutterhead hydraulic drive system and employ virtual control to reduce the model order. Using Lyapunov functions, we ensure the stability of the entire system and derive the control law for the cutterhead rotation speed controller, along with parameter-adaptive laws acting as parameter estimators. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy through joint simulation using AMESim and Simulink. The results show that the designed cutterhead rotation speed controller achieves high tracking accuracy and good adaptability. © 2024 IEEE.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a promising 5G technology, but the high energy consumption from numerous radio components is a key challenge. Prior work has explored higher than 4-bit ADCs, but very low 1-2 bit remain uninvestigated. This paper provides an in-depth examination of the resolution versus power savings and signal quality degradation trade-offs with 1-3-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) in Massive MIMO systems. Mathematical modeling and simulations quantify the exponential reduction in power consumption along with losses in key performance metrics like signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), throughput, and spectral efficiency with lower ADC resolutions stemming from increased quantization noise. Advanced linear detection techniques are shown to effectively recover the signal quality degradation. The analysis provides valuable insights on jointly optimizing ADC configuration and signal processing to maximize overall system efficiency. Energy savings of over 50% are demonstrated with 1-bit ADCs along with the ability to maintain acceptable performance metrics using linear detectors. The practical implementation feasibility is also discussed. This work enables ultra-low-resolution ADC deployments in energy-efficient Massive MIMO systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Air pollution is a complex problem that needs to be analyzed from different angles. The issue of air pollution is especially critical in large cities, where many people are concentrated, and the highest risks of health deterioration are observed. A unique solution is proposed to solve the problem in large cities and improve citizens' quality of life. A pilot prototype of a biotechnological system is being developed - a filter using moss sphagnum. The solution acts as an air filter, absorbs fine dust, purifies the air, and creates a favourable space. The proposed solution includes automated systems that support the viability of the selected mosses in real-time mode. These systems automatically provide the required temperature, humidity, shade, water, and other conditions. Control systems are operated flawlessly, as this can adversely affect plants. A multivariable control system has been formulated that has proven to be highly effective for the problem. © 2022 IEEE.

Extracting parameters accurately and effectively from solar photovoltaic (PV) models is crucial for detailed simulation, evaluation, and management of PV systems. Although there has been an increase in the development of analytical, numerical, and metaheuristic methods targeting this task, accurately determining these parameters continues to be a significant challenge. This study focuses on applying Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for the extraction of key parameters of RTC France solar cells, a critical step towards enhancing PV system efficiency and reliability. Additionally, the PSO's performance is evaluated against other metaheuristic algorithms including Enhanced Chaotic JAYA (CJAYA), Performance-Guided JAYA (PGJAYA), and Enhanced Gradient-Based Optimizer (EGBO), underscoring the effectiveness of the proposed PSO-based approach. Utilizing MATLAB-SIMULINK, comprehensive analysis and results are presented, shedding light on the efficacy of PSO in addressing the intricacies of parameter extraction in PV systems. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The problem of air pollution is significant, as there is a negative impact on human health. This problem is especially relevant in large cities with many people living there and many enterprises. As part of the research, a solution is proposed where a non-standard approach is implemented using moss to purify the air in specific locations. This solution, if appropriately scaled, can have a significant environmental and social impact by replacing the planting of many trees. It is planned to create a prototype of a biotechnological filter and further monitoring and analysis of the performance of systems, including the cultivation of a plant crop - moss. The article describes the planned experiments to create an autonomous control system supporting moss growth using reinforcement learning algorithms. For the algorithms, the most crucial part is available data. For this reason, the process of data collection from the biofilter is described. This approach will allow us to analyze the operation of the filter components both in the laboratory and actual conditions, as well as maintain all the requirements. In general, reducing air pollution will protect the climate and the environment. The research group develops an effective biofilter for the environment through a carefully selected and unique combination of biology and control technologies. © 2022 IEEE.

Ecosystems are undergoing unprecedented persistent deterioration due to unsustainable anthropogenic human activities,such as overfishing and deforestation,and the effects of such damage on ecological stability are *** recent advances in experimental and theoretical studies on regime shifts and tipping points,theoretical tools for understanding the extinction chain,which is the sequence of species extinctions resulting from overexploitation,are still lacking,especially for large-scale nonlinear networked *** this study,we developed a mathematical tool to predict regime shifts and extinction chains in ecosystems under multiple exploitation situations and verified it in 26 real-world mutualistic networks of various sizes and *** discovered five phases during the exploitation process:safe,partial extinction,bistable,tristable,and collapse,which enabled the optimal design of restoration strategies for degraded or collapsed *** validated our approach using a 20-year dataset from an eelgrass restoration ***,we also found a specific region in the diagram spanning exploitation rates and competition intensities,where exploiting more species helps increase *** computational tool provides insights into harvesting,fishing,exploitation,or deforestation plans while conserving or restoring the biodiversity of mutualistic ecosystems.
