It is imperative for energy systems to reduce their environmental footprint in a cost-efficient manner, for which renwable energy sources (RES) and complementary technologies become desirable options to achieve said task. This is particularly the case for systems with different energy sources, as they'd be able to either address one specific type of energy demand and/or allow for the coupling of different energy carriers that would allow for technologies that normally don't interact to start complementing each other. Therefore, this paper proposes various scenarios for the UCY campus in which hydrogen technologies would allow for the electrification of thermal demand while harnessing the surplus production coming from a solar park, which is modelled through the Integrate optimization tool and validated through DidSILENT PowerFactory. The results showcased a rise of up to 58% in self-sufficiency while the annual energy costs and CO2 emissions were reduced by 45% and 48% respectively. © 2024 IEEE.

The agent-based financial market simulators serve as an important validation tool for trading strategies. For high-fidelity simulation, it is pivotal to calibrate the parameters of a simulator so that the generated simulation data resembles the observed real market data of interest. In traditional calibration methods, it is typical that the parameters of the simulator are set to be time-invariant. However, the dynamic nature of the real financial market introduces various variability into the behaviors of the market participants over different time intervals, posing in-herent limitations to the traditional methods. A more reasonable approach might involve employing a simulator with time-variant parameters. This suggests that the model parameters can be dynamically adjusted at different stages of the simulation to adapt to the evolving market. Consequently, the calibration problem of the financial market simulators can be treated as a dynamic optimization problem. To dynamically calibrate the simulators, we introduce an Evolutionary Dynamic Optimization (EDO) framework. By monitoring the changes of the best fitness, the whole simulation time interval is adaptively divided into multiple stages. Then the Negatively Correlated Search (NCS) algorithm is employed to effectively adjust the parameters at different simulation stages to better simulate the real financial market. Empirical results on both synthetic and real data verify that our dynamic calibration framework significantly outperforms traditional calibration methods that fixing a parameter for the whole simulation interval. The proposed strategy of detecting dynamic changes is also shown to be more reliable than the naive method of manually segmenting stages. In terms of calibration time, our proposed method significantly improves by nearly 93% compared to the fixed parameter setting, and approximately 61% compared to manual segmentation calibration. © 2024 IEEE.

Potholes pose significant dangers on roads, leading to substantial damage to vehicles, causing accidents, and increasing maintenance costs for authorities. Accurate and timely detection of potholes is crucial for effective road maintenance and repair. However, this task is challenging, especially under varying weather conditions. Rain, snow, and fog can obscure sensors and cameras, making it difficult to capture clear images of the road surface. Additionally, nighttime and shadows can further reduce the visibility of potholes. In this paper, we propose a pothole detection system that operates effectively under diverse weather conditions using YOLOv9, a real-time object detection algorithm. Our approach was trained and evaluated on a dataset of images generated under different weather scenarios. The resulting model achieved a precision of 0.807, a recall of 0.759, a mAP50 of 0.829, and a mAP 50 - 95 of 0.551.

Learning performance data (e.g., quiz scores and attempts) is significant for understanding learner engagement and knowledge mastery level. However, the learning performance data collected from intelligent Tutoring systems (ITSs) often suffers from sparsity, impacting the accuracy of learner modeling and knowledge assessments. To address this, we introduce the 3DG framework (3-Dimensional tensor for Densification and Generation), a novel approach combining tensor factorization with advanced generative models, including Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) and Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), for enhanced data imputation and augmentation. The framework operates by first representing the data as a three-dimensional tensor, capturing dimensions of learners, questions, and attempts. It then densifies the data through tensor factorization and augments it using Generative AI models, tailored to individual learning patterns identified via clustering. Applied to data from an AutoTutor lesson by the Center for the Study of Adult Literacy (CSAL), the 3DG framework effectively generated scalable, personalized simulations of learning performance. Comparative analysis revealed GAN’s superior reliability over GPT-4 in this context, underscoring its potential in addressing data sparsity challenges in ITSs and contributing to the advancement of personalized educational technology. © 2024 CEUR-WS. The complex and large-scale scientific workflow applications are effectively executes on the cloud. The performance of cloud computing highly depends on the task scheduling. Optimal workflow scheduling is still a challenge that needs to be addressed due to the conflicting objectives and increasing demand for quality of service. Task scheduling is an NP-hard problem due to its complexity. The newly introduced methods for resolving the problem of task scheduling are facing challenges to take the benefits of all aspects of cloud computing. In this article, we study the joint optimization of cost and makespan of scheduling workflows in infrastructure as a service clouds and propose a new workflow scheduling scheme using deep learning. In this scheme, a deep-Q learning-based heterogeneous earliest-finish-time (DQ-HEFT) algorithm is developed, which closely integrates the deep learning mechanism with the task scheduling heuristic HEFT. The workflowsim simulator is used for the experiment of the real-world and synthetic workflows. The experiment results demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed approach compared with existing algorithms. This technique can achieve significantly better makespan and speed metrics with a remarkably higher volume of data and can run faster compared with the existing workflow scheduling algorithms in cloud computing environment. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The current paper addresses the central role of hyperparameter optimization in improving the predictive power of the MLP Regressor for forecasting student performance in Portuguese secondary schools. The uniqueness of this research lies in its exploration of metaheuristic optimization algorithms, specifically highlighting GGO (Greylag Goose Optimization) for enhancement. The study utilized a dataset crucial for understanding and predicting student performance, with a special focus on its distinctive features. By comprehensively tuning the MLP Regressor, the paper demonstrates remarkable improvements in various performance measures, as evident in the enclosed tables. Specifically, the MSE values calculated for the MLP Regressor both before and after GGO optimization are compared. Without optimization, the MLP Regressor had an MSE of 0.0103. After GGO optimization, the MSE significantly improved to 0.0060, indicating enhanced accuracy with GGO in the model. These findings emphasize that hyperparameter optimization, particularly the GGO technique, is crucial for refining the MLP Regressor in predicting student performance. The paper not only delves into the technical aspects but also concludes by highlighting the broader consequences of these outcomes. The potential educational applications are substantial, as improved models can provide more accurate predictions, empowering educators and policymakers to make informed decisions in education. This paper establishes a foundation for future research directions, contributing to the pool of ideas for educational predictive modeling. © 2024 IEEE.

The objective of this project is to develop an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) prototype capable of retrieving small objects in domestic environments. As the robotics field continues to advance, the demand for autonomous systems that enhance daily life is rapidly increasing. Autonomous systems have the potential to improve efficiency by performing routine tasks, thereby reducing human effort and promoting convenience in household settings. This study explores the development of a small UGV designed to identify, navigate toward, and retrieve small objects while autonomously avoiding obstacles such as walls and furniture in domestic environments. The system utilizes neural networks for real-time object detection. The UGV design consists of an object retrieval mechanism suitable for handling items typically left scattered in domestic environments. The proof-of-concept results show the potential of designed UGV domestic, and could potentially enable further advancements in autonomous household assistance technologies. © 2025 IEEE.

The rapid advancement in mobile broadband technology has evolved wireless infrastructure influencing internet-of-things (IoTs). This evolution has made mobile IoTs (mIoTs) as centre of attention due to its potential of providing seamless connectivity to enable intelligent transportation systems with huge data demands of vehicular users. To address the ever-escalating data demands of vehicular mobile users, vehicular edge computing (VEC) and moving small cells (mSCs) play a pivotal role. mSCs together with VEC are capable to provide improved service quality for mIoTs. However, incorporating the mSCs in vehicles for mIoTs presents challenges while assigning the resources in mIoT-mSC network. This is due to the existence of time varying interference among mSCs. This work explores the distributed resource assignment mechanism for RSU assisted mIoT-mSC network formed in vehicular environment. In the proposed work, location prediction of city buses deployed with mSCs is done using federated learning (FL) which is subsequently utilized for efficient assignment of resources in mIoT-mSC network. Numerical results are provided to validate the proposed resource assignment mechanism. © 2024 IEEE.
