In this paper we present an approach for visualizing net flow data through clustering to identify anomalies in network traffic. Various clustering techniques are applicable for Intrusion Detection for identifying anomalous events. In this paper we present an approach based on Simple K-Means for analyzing network flow data using any flow data attribute, such as IP address, port, protocols etc, to detect anomalies. Our approach is unique and efficient due to the preprocessing and filtering techniques devised. The outcome of our approach is firstly in its capability to detect anomalous network events, secondly in providing an overview about given data set based on key network parameters and thirdly, in providing visualization of interesting security events in a very intuitive way. We present our analysis and results where we demonstrate the visualization capabilities of our approach for detecting anomalous events. ©2009 IEEE.

This paper proposes an adaptive cross-layer mapping algorithm to improve the transmission quality of MPEG-4 video stream over an IEEE 802.11e wireless network. Instead of classifying video data to a specific access category in an 802.11e network, we propose an algorithm that dynamically maps MPEG-4 video packets to appropriate access categories according to both the significance of the video data and the network traffic load. Our proposed cross-layer architecture passes information about the significance of video packets from the application layer to the media access control layer. The queue length of a specific access category is used to deduce the network traffic load. We conducted a performance evaluation of our proposed cross-layer approach under both light and heavily loaded network conditions. Our simulation results demonstrate: (a) superior performance of our proposed approach (under both light and heavy loads) over 802.11e (Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) and static mapping schemes, (b) not only guarantees prioritized transmission of essential video data but also provides efficient queue length utilization. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Breast Thermography is one of the scanning techniques used for breast cancer detection. Looking at breast thermal image it is difficult to interpret parameters of tumor such as depth, size and location which are useful for diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. In our previous work (ITBIC) we proposed a framework for estimation of tumor size using clever algorithms and the radiative heat transfer model. In this paper, we expand it to incorporate the more realistic Pennes bio-heat transfer model and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, and analyze it's performance in terms of computational speed, accuracy, robustness against noisy inputs, ability to make use of prior information and ability to estimate multiple parameters simultaneously. We discuss the influence of various parameters used in its implementation. We apply this method on clinical data and extract reliable results for the first time using breast thermography. ©2009 IEEE.

The development of assessment management system has been discussed for a long time. The motivation always focuses on the evaluation of learners ' ability or on the difficulties of examination. The common examination content could be composed by text or simple figures, and the assistant functionalities could also be developed to meet the individual needs. But these functionalities couldn't interoperate with each others in this situation, and the text content isn't enough to represent the examination content. In this paper, we proposed a novel system architecture to make interoperability realizable based on web service technologies then we also tried to integrate the multimedia streaming resources into our MAMS (MINE Assessment Management System). Through this architecture, we could easily integrate external functionalities without redeveloping the system. Besides, we propose another way to evaluate student's learning performance by duration of exam, and we will discuss the difficulty coefficient and duration of exam. ©2009 IEEE.

this paper focused on the implementation of automatic device switching to perform in restoration scheme located at distribution fiber section. This protection device is potentially will improve the system efficiency in order to provide the continuous data flow until it reach to the end user. We proposed for immediate split structure in EPON network when the signal is totally split when it pass through the optical splitter. The restoration scheme proposed in this paper was presented and the simulation results proved the system feasibility. The bit error rate (BER) performances are measured by a 1.25 Gp/s non- return-to zero (NRZ) pseudo random binary sequence (PBRS) with a pattern length of 231-1 for the downstream traffic between OLT and 8 ONUs. Our results were obtained by observing bit error rates, eye diagram, and optical power levels. © 2009 IEEE.

Conventional data grid systems require the application to access remote data through explicit APIs, consequently sacrificing user transparency. Thus, some systems enable the application to transparently access remote data by copying the entire file to a user's local storage before executing the application, even when only a tiny file fragment is required. Such an approach consumes unnecessary transmission time and storage space, with the additional problem of maintaining replica synchronization. Traditionally, replica consistency treats shared files as read-only, consequently sacrificing guaranteed replica consistency. This paper presents a DSM-based fragment-level file sharing framework called "Spigot". Spigot allows the users to design their applications with the POSIX I/O interface. Moreover, Spigot transfers only the necessary file fragments on user demand, thereby reducing transmission time, wasted network bandwidth and required storage space. Data waiting time is further reduced by overlapping data transmission and data analysis. The DSM concept maintains replica synchronization. Real experiments show reduced turnaround times in data-intensive applications. © 2009 IEEE.

Grid data sharing systems usually provide a dataintensive application with either a pre-staging mechanism or an on-demand access mechanism to access shared data. Pre-staging systems simultaneously download an entire shared file from multiple data sources even when only a tiny file fragment is required. Such systems consume unnecessary data transmission time and storage space. On-demand access systems, on the other hand, download only the required fragments from a single data source. Such systems unfortunately do not fully exploit available network bandwidth. This paper presents a data sharing system, designated as the OnDemand data Co-Allocation (ODCA). ODCA facilitates an unmodified legacy applications to transparently access shared data by using native I/O system calls. ODCA transfers only the necessary fragments on user demand, thereby reducing data transmission time, avoiding wasted network bandwidth and wasted storage space. Moreover, ODCA reduces data waiting time by downloading the file fragments from multiple data sources. Experimental results show ODCA successfully reduces turnaround time in dataintensive applications. © 2009 IEEE.

In this paper, the effect of external optical feedback (EOF) on the turn-on time delay (ton) of uncooled semiconductor laser diode (SLD) is investigated theoretically. The effects temperature of operation (T) and EOF on ton are calculated according to their effect on threshold carrier density (Nth). The temperature dependence (TD) of Nth is calculated according to the TD of laser cavity parameters and not by the well-known Parkove relationship. Simulation results show that ton increases as T increases due to increasing of Nth. In addition, ton decreases as external reflectivity (rext) increases when the phase of reflected light is coherent. While at incoherent reflected light, ton increases sharply around specified value of r ext where this leads to inoperable case for SLD. © 2009 IEEE.

For the elderly and chronic patients with cardiovascular disease who live alone, it is necessary to constantly monitor their physiological parameters, especially the electrocardiogram (ECG), to effectively prevent and control their health condition and even to provide urgent treatment or care while an emergency such as the abnormal variation of heart rate (HR) occurs. In this paper, a wireless in-home physiological monitoring system, based on multi-hop relay communications, which can ubiquitously and continuously monitor the patient's ECG at any time or any place at home without space limit and the "dead spot" due to the extended communication coverage by multi-hop wireless connectivity, is proposed. The system consists of a mobile-care device, which is responsible for capturing and wirelessly sending the patient's ECG data, a wireless multi-hop relay network (WMHRN) that is in charge of relaying the data sent by the former, and a residential gateway (RG), which is responsible for gathering and uploading the received ECG data to the remote care server through the Internet to carry out the patient's health condition monitoring and the management of pathological data. However, in order to assure that the ECG data can be effectively and timely forwarded, from the mobile-care device to the RG through the WMHRN, to meet the healthcare quality of service (H-QoS) demand for reliable and real-time end-to-end ECG transmission, the analysis of WMHRN latency in data-forwarding stage and the deployment consideration of wireless relay nodes are investigated in detail in this work. Moreover, an emergency alert service using short message service (SMS), based on the detection of abnormal variation of HR, is also used in the RG to further enhance the healthcare service quality. A prototype of this system has been developed and implemented. Finally, the experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed system. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. IEEE 802.16e standard for mobile Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), defines the implementation of hard handover. The standard covers the physical and MAC layer. To apply the layer 3 (L3) handover protocol over the existing IEEE 802.16e layer 2 (L2) handover scheme, the fast mobile IPv6 was used by many researches, but long latency is main challenge for real-time applications. In this paper, to solve latency problem, an integrated scheme is proposed that it combines cross layer design and cross function optimization. The integrated scheme, bases on a pre-establish tunnels concept is dealt both, L2 handover in 802.16e and L3 handover in fast mobile IPv6 to effectively blend the relative messages of L2 and L3. The proposed scheme is compare with the scheme what standardized in IETF network working group (RFC5270). Analytic results prove that the proposed scheme can reduce not only handover latency but also packet losses.
