The occurrence of accidents on the freeway/highway has a significant impact on normal traffic manipulations and the reasons that cause accidents are admitted primarily due to the introduction of traffic incidents. Hence, automatic traffic monitoring system gradually attracts the attention of researchers in the field of intelligent transportation system. In this paper, a vision-based approach for automatic detection of traffic incident is proposed. Entropy-based features are extracted to create a cellular model that simulates the dynamic behavior of the traffic flow. When an unusual event happens on the vehicular lane, the system can detect it immediately and send out signals to the approaching vehicles to prevent accidents from happening. Experiments were conducted on various simulations and the results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed approach on traffic incident detection.

In this paper we consider a team of mobile nodes that are in charge of cooperative target tracking. We propose communication-aware navigation functions that allow the nodes to perform their task while maintaining their connectivity to a fixed base station and avoiding obstacles. More specifically, we show how to incorporate measures of link qualities in the navigation functions. We consider both centralized and decentralized scenarios. We furthermore explore the impact of stochastic channels and channel estimation error on the overall performance.

Scanning and imaging techniques, when applied to medicine, are helpful in diagnosis of some critical illnesses that affect human beings. Imaging techniques use the electromagnetic spectrum for the construction of internal anatomy, visibility of organs, and for detection of tumors and other such anomalies. Infrared Radiation (IR), which is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, is a potential alternative in medical imaging, as it is non-invasive and non-ionizing. Thermal (or infrared) radiation emission from human body will be higher around the regions where an anomaly such as a tumor is present inside the body - essentially due to increased cell related activity. In the work reported here we use the IR energy measurement from the body surface to contour a tumor inside. As the radiation and the attendant attenuation are non-linear, it is quite involved to interpret the IR energy measured outside the body. However, we attempt to develop an inverse function to estimate parameters of tumor. We use some strong assumptions (can be described as trivializing the clinical value by medical scientists and practitioners!) to get an exact solution to the “tumor contouring” problem and present a framework called ITBIC as a solution.

This paper presented architecture approach to remote monitor and control for providing protection and self-restoration against fault in the distribution region of fiber-to-the-home passive optical network (FTTH-PON). The devices consist of optical switches and a microcontroller to handle the optical switch routing. Optical diagnosis, performance monitoring, and characterization are essential for achieving high performance and ensuring high quality of services (QoS) of any efficient and reliable optical access network. In this paper, we proposed a practical in-service transmission surveillance scheme for passive optical network (PON). The proposed scheme is designed and simulated by using the OptiSystem CAD program with the system sensitivity - 35 dBm. A real time optical network monitoring software tool named smart access network _ testing, analyzing and database (SANTAD) is introduced for providing remote controlling, centralized monitoring, system analyzing, and fault detection features in large scale network infrastructure management and fault diagnostic. 1625 nm light source is assigned to carry the troubleshooting signal for line status monitoring purposes in the live network system. Three acquisition parameters of optical pulse: distance range, pulse width, and acquisition time, is contributed to obtain the high accuracy in determining the exact failure location. The lab prototype of SANTAD was implemented in the proposed scheme for analyzing the network performance. The experimental results showed SANTAD is able to detect any occurrence of fault and address the failure location within 30 seconds. The main advantages of this work are to manage network efficiently, reduce hands on workload, minimize network downtime and rapidly restore failed services when problems are detected and diagnosed.

This paper presents a path planning strategy for a mobile robot. The path planning strategy is according to the experience that the mobile robot has been experienced in target navigation. The mixed reality technique is implemented by both the virtools tool and mobile robot. There are three basic interactive behaviors of human beings which have been implemented on this proposed mobile robot. They are targeting navigation behavior, face tracking behavior, and obstacle avoidance behavior; all of them are designed by the fuzzy rule methods, respectively. These behaviors make the proposed path planning strategy possible. The virtual reality environment is used to implement the arbitrator of the behaviors and to choose the behavior rules for dynamic environment changing. Experiments show that the proposed behaviors are well designed. The proposed robot system can optimize the path planning based on the previous navigation experience.

We proposed and developed a fully passive device prototype, named Passive In-line Monitoring (PIM) device, which used to tap out a small ratio of triple-play (data, voice, and video) signals for monitoring purpose without affecting the transmission in tree-structured fiberto-the-home (FTTH) access network. The device will be installed with the main lines in FTTH permanently to allow the field engineers or technicians to simply connect this device to a portable tester unit for transmission surveillance and failure detection. The PIM device is used to sharply determine location of break point before repairing. A passive taper circuit is required to obtain the optical signals to provide a visual way of monitoring the receiving signal performance. The entire optical components that had been used in the circuit design including connectors, splices, optical isolators, and optical couplers. The PIM device is able to improve the service reliability and reduce the repairing cost and time.
