Conventional data grid systems require the application to access remote data through explicit APIs, consequently sacrificing user transparency. Thus, some systems enable the application to transparently access remote data by copying the entire file to a userpsilas local storage before executing the application, even when only a tiny file fragment is required. Such an approach consumes unnecessary transmission time and storage space, with the additional problem of maintaining replica synchronization. Traditionally, replica consistency treats shared files as read-only, consequently sacrificing guaranteed replica consistency. This paper presents a DSM-based fragment-level file sharing framework called ldquoSpigotrdquo. Spigot allows the users to design their applications with the POSIX I/O interface. Moreover, Spigot transfers only the necessary file fragments on user demand, thereby reducing transmission time, wasted network bandwidth and required storage space. Data waiting time is further reduced by overlapping data transmission and data analysis. The DSM concept maintains replica synchronization. Real experiments show reduced turnaround times in data-intensive applications.

This paper concerns the near-real time supply and demand balancing problem in the changing electric energy industry. In particular, potential dispatch problems in the presence of hard-to-control wind and solar power have emerged as the key industry concern. Our work evolves around the idea that the more predictive information about wind power output is known and the more carefully this information is included dynamically, the more effective integration of intermittent power will be. In this paper we recognize that a combination of predicted wind power and ahead-of-time knowledge of customers' willingness to adjust their consumption at a price could result in even more effective system-wide supply and demand balancing. We generalize our recent work which is based on the look-ahead model-predictive control approach to the wind power integration. A Markov model for predicting wind power is used to determine the optimal amount of wind power to be sent to the grid in order to balance demand while accounting for the limiting ramping rates of other power plants. As expected, utilizing the full wind power output is sub-optimal and different technologies will be needed to utilize this clean energy resource fully as it is made available. Different storage technologies as well as adaptive demand-side response are such key candidates. In this paper we generalize our recently proposed look-ahead model predictive dispatch to integrate the price-responsive demand. We show using the IEEE 14 bus example potential benefits from simultaneous dispatch of both conventional power plants characterized by their inherently limiting ramping rates and the price-responsive demand characterized by its demand function. A comparison is made to the dispatch without active demand-side adaptation.

In this work we propose a Pulse-Wave (PW) extension to the Angle-of-arrival-assisted Radio Interferometry (ARI) technique to dramatically reduce the scan-time and the number of vantage points necessary to obtain high-fidelity target position estimation. Accordingly, we call this enhanced process PW-ARI. PW-ARI is the fusion of data from three domains: time (time-of-flight), phase (relative phase-of-arrival), and angle (direction-of-arrival). It has a number of desirable attributes. Foremost among these are its ability to rapidly image extremely large volumes with high accuracy and dense target clusters, support an infinite number of friendly aircraft while providing stealth operational support, and present a spectrally small footprint to both hostile (evade detection and counter-measures) and friendly (maximize electromagnetic compatibility) systems.

This paper focuses on developing a passive in-line monitoring (PIM) device prototype, which used to tap out a small ratio of triple-play signals for in-service monitoring and failure identifying against fiber fault in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) access network. This device will be installed with the main lines in FTTH permanently to allow the technicians to simply connect it to a portable tester unit for transmission surveillance and failure detection. The PIM device is used to sharply determine the location of break point before repairing. A passive taper circuit is required to obtain the optical signals to provide a visual way of monitoring the receiving signal performance. This device is potentially to improve the service reliability and reduce the repairing cost and time.

Shamir proposed the first (t, n) threshold secret sharing scheme. Shamir's scheme is ideal and perfect. In this paper, we propose two modifications of Shamir's secret sharing scheme. In our first modification, each shareholder keeps both x-coordinate and y-coordinate of a polynomial as private share. In our second modification, dealer uses polynomial with degree larger than the threshold value t to generate shares for a (t, n) threshold scheme. We show that these two modified schemes are ideal and perfect. Using these two modifications, we design a multilevel threshold secret sharing schemes (MTSS). We prove that the proposed scheme is secure. © 2009 IEEE.

Emergency service vehicles need safety and fluent paths to save time. In this paper, a centralized traffic control mechanism is proposed for the evacuation of vehicles that drive toward the dedicated path of the emergency vehicles (EV), e.g. ambulance, fire engines, police cars, etc, using the dedicated short range communications (DSRC) protocol. In our proposed mechanism, a centralized server is used to monitor and control all traffic information to support real time traffic information and services for emergency vehicles, and the centralized server also calculates the shortest path for emergency vehicles to pass by. If the approaching information of emergency vehicles is not announced in advance to other vehicles that will obstruct the approaching path of emergency vehicles, it will cause the traffic muddle on the road and increase the delayed time for emergency vehicles. Thus, we also propose a data dissemination scheme to transmit the warning messages to other vehicles that will obstruct the approaching road of emergency vehicles. In our experiment, we will exhibit the performance of our proposed system.

The development of silica planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) employing multiple phase-shifting elements to achieve optical signal processing is presented. Thermo-optic switching in Mach Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structures has been demonstrated with typical switching powers of 250-300 mW. 6-loop lattice-form MZI devices designed with specific filter responses have been fabricated, packaged, and tested. 10 GHz to 40 GHz pulse repetition rate multiplication has been achieved, and the tunability of the 6 phase control elements allows the generation of arbitrary 4- bit binary code patterns. Further improvements in complexity, power consumption, loss, and polarization sensitivity in these devices are discussed. © 2009 SPIE.

Recent, technological advances in healthcare monitoring, sensors and wireless networking able to design a system for global healthcare monitoring applications such as ECG, SpO 2 , glucose, temperature etc. A 6lowpan (IPv6 low power wireless personal area networks) node with biomedical sensors strategically placed on the patient body area networks that can monitor biomedical data. The 6lowpan node has IP-address so it provides real-time feedback of patient to the service provider or doctor. Patient freely moves in-side the PAN or hospital area and service provider efficiently able to receive biomedical data. This technique we modified AODV protocol for pervasive 6lowpan networks. It used high level computational multi-hop communication method for transmitting biomedical data to the gateway. NS-2.33 simulator result shows the modified AODV protocol has better performance then LOAD and DYMO-low routing protocols for healthcare parameters. We tested real-time our modified protocols and show the performance of packet delivery ratio in time interval between 6lowpan nodes for healthcare parameters.

The link layer routing protocols 6lowpan ad hoc on-demand distance vector routing (LOAD) and dynamic MANET on-demand for 6lowpan (DYMO-low) are integrated in 6lowpan stack. The stack is less complicated and it support IPv6 enabled packets route for biomedical data. Both routing protocols are modified and developed new approach for patient healthcare monitoring system. Thus, proposed integration method is more reliable speedily in healthcare monitoring system than existing protocol in 6lowpans. Mesh routing components are introduced to enable messages to deliver around the nodes. Itpsilas a new approach to monitor patients globally and analysis healthcare biomedical data, even though the doctors and patients both are fart in distance. During emergency cases, doctor able to monitor patient condition efficiently to reduce time consuming, thus is provider more effective healthcare system. For real-time testing, dummy biomedical data are used in IP-based ubiquitous sensor nodes and gateway. Real-time implementation results are show for the integration protocol and it is more reliable in compare to other 6lowpan protocols.
