In previous work [1], we proposed a real-time MPEG-4 VBR video traffic prediction algorithm that calculates the probability density function (PDF) based on the last N frames, rWin, by using Cubic-spline interpolation method, and then utilize it for the prediction of next frame. We fixed the size of rWin as five in the algorithm. Although the algorithm is capable of providing more accurate prediction than those in the research literature, it still has weakness on the adapting the traffic dynamics due to the fixed size of rWin. In this paper, we first study the experimental investigation about the number of rWin, and propose an enhanced traffic prediction algorithm with dynamic rWin.

E-learning content creation is not an easy task, but its evaluation is even more complex. In order to evaluate if the content is adequate to the studentspsila needs, it would be helpful to know how the student assimilated the learning content, how he/she reacted to it and the period of time spent on the learning object. Besides, considering the different cognitive features of learning and the possibility of adjusting the didactic content, it could help teacherpsilas evaluation in an available online course. This work describes a monitoring system (Msys) able to track the level of utilization of studentpsilas activities, and presents summarized and comparative results to the teacher and to the student. This paper describes how the MSys tool was created using current standards on digital content construction, defining functional requirements of interface to its development, presenting a proof-of concept and how it could be integrate to online learning systems, providing benefits to the teacherpsilas evaluation.

Cooperation and sharing of resources are needed urgently between domains in pervasive computing environment, so building an effective cross-domain authorization model become a key issue. The IRBAC 2000 model accomplish flexibly interoperation by dynamic inter-domain role mapping, but how to manage the associations is not discussed, which may cause security problems. Algorithms to detect these security issues are proposed, and the experimental results show that our algorithms can improve the security of the model, so the algorithms can be applied as a security checking mechanism during role mapping in pervasive computing environments.

The intelligent transportation system (ITS), a worldwide initiative program utilizes novel information and communication technology for transport infrastructure and vehicles. Among extensive ITS components, efficient communication system is the most important role which connects numerous vehicles with roadside infrastructure and management center in the ITS program. Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) has been a cornerstone of the envisioned ITS without infrastructure. However, multihop data delivery through VANET is difficult by the fact that vehicular networks are highly mobile and frequently disconnected. Thus, traditional ad hoc routing protocols are not well suited for these high dynamic network. In this paper we propose a new heterogeneous vehicular network (HVN) architecture and a mobility pattern aware routing for HVN. HVN integrates wireless metropolitan area network (WMAN) with VANET technology and reserves advantages of better coverage in WMAN and high data rate in VANET. Vehicles in HVN can communicate with each other and access Internet ubiquitously. We mainly focus on the routing issue for HVN, because the routing protocol for HVN is different from those used in MANET or VANET. With the WMAN infrastructure support in HVN, the mobility pattern aware routing protocol can adopt the whole information of the vehicular network and unique characteristics of vehicle mobility to establish a reliable route path in high dynamic vehicular network.

The clinical symptoms of metabolic disorders during neonatal periods are often not apparent. If not treated earlier, irreversible damages such as mental retardation or even death may occur. Therefore, practicing the newborn screening is essential to prevent newborns from these damages. In the paper, we propose a newborn screening system using Support Vector Machines (SVM) classification techniques to evaluate, interpret, and determine whether a newborn has metabolic disorder diseases. The raw data, i.e., substances concentrations, were collected from the Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS). In addition, based on the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), we design the system under Web Services .NET environment. The system provides features including heterogeneous platforms, protocols, as well as applications. It can be integrated seamlessly into National Taiwan University Hospital Information Systems later.

In this paper, we explore the idea of integrating the remove last pass (RLP) algorithm to the fast zero (FastZ) algorithm as the prior initial solution to improve routing performance in optical multistage interconnection networks (OMINs). OMINs are popular for its cost-effectiveness and self-routable characteristics to meet the demand for high speed switching capability. A great challenge in dealing with OMINs is the optical crosstalk caused by optical signal coupling when propagating through the switching elements comprising the architecture. Many algorithms have been developed to solve optical crosstalk using different approaches. The new fast zero with RLP (FastRLP) algorithm is developed based on the time domain approach for solving optical crosstalk in the optical omega network. Simulation results have shown that integrating RLP to FastZ algorithm successfully improved routing performance.

In previous papers we solved the problem of the sensor location optimization based on the minimization of interferences due to wireless communications between sensors. We assumed that each sensor has wireless communication capabilities, in that each sensor reading is characterized in terms of signal to noise ratio. In this paper we extend the previous work in the system of systems context by studying the robustness of the optimized sensor location in the presence of white additive Gaussian Noise (AWGN). We address the question on weather the optimized sensor locations remain the same if the initial reading sensors are only affected by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The analysis results are verified trough computer simulations.

Recently, many researchers believe that learning motivation and interest can be enhanced by participating in educational games. Video capture virtual reality technologies provide a possibility for designing games. However, it has not been widely used in the field of educational games. A digital game-based learning system, called PILE (physical interactive learning environment), was developed which utilized video capture virtual reality technologies and was applied in educational setting with learning activity design. The learning activity was designed by integrating the PILE system to English learning materials of the third grade of elementary school along with the phonics in a digital game-based learning design. An experiment of using the PILE system was conducted for examining English learning achievement,motivation and attitude with two groups. The experimental group used the PILE system for English learning. In contrast, the control group used PowerPoint slides for English learning. The result of the experiment shows that studentspsila English achievement is enhanced by integrating the PILE system into English learning activity with game-based learning design. Positive learning motivation and attitude on English learning was also found.

During schooling, individual ability differences are inevitable. Lowability students, when always performing worse, may feel discouraged and frustrated during learning; high-ability and hence better-performance students may not find learning interesting as well when facing easy challenges all the time. This study proposes an equal opportunity tactic in order to moderate the differences in ability perception by manipulating the challenge of tasks for every student. A trail test was also conducted to preliminarily evaluate the influences on student behaviors.
