The past decade has seen a resurgence in span powering with the proliferation of broadband services. Span powering offers an economical method to power a variety of DSL equipment over large distances from the central office (CO). The reach of span power has increased in recent years with the acceptance of new 200 Vdc limits. However, in order to take advantage of this higher voltage level, reliable DC ground fault protection must now be provided. The twisted copper pair wires used to deliver the span voltage are often in close proximity to power transmission lines. Power line interference can be induced onto the telephone lines resulting in an unwanted common mode AC noise. Small DC ground fault currents become difficult to measure in the presence of these induced AC currents. This paper will discuss an adaptive filtering approach, based on the LMS algorithm, to eliminate the unwanted interference. Guidelines from Telcordia GR-1089-Core, chapter 5 will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the adaptive filter.

Game competition has promising potential to be a powerful pedagogical strategy. To maximize the benefits and alleviate its possible negative effects, a substitutive competition design is proposed in this paper. The substitutive competition is a kind of mirror competition, a competition of pet-styled virtual characters that represent learnerspsila open learner models. An animal companion system,named My-Pet system, was implemented to realize such concept. A preliminary system evaluation was also conducted in an elementary school to examine the effect of the substitutive competition in the My-Pet system. The results revealed that the substitutive competition was helpful to students' increased motivation and time-on-task that further contributed to improved learning efficiency.

The problem of efficiently allocating resources to high speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) users in a 3GPP network is studied. A discrete optimization problem is formulated in which user channel qualities and buffer sizes are used at the base station to jointly allocate uplink resources. To circumvent the possibility of local optima, a linearized version of this formulation is also presented. It is shown that knowledge of user buffer sizes can significantly improve the overall achievable bit rate.

In the future, Mobile Ad hoc networks (MANET)s are expected to be deployed in myriads of scenarios having complex node mobility and connectivity dynamics. Unfortunately, these complex movement scenarios give a tough challenge to the MANET routing protocol. We reviewed some mobility models that have different mobility characteristic, and also studied the effect of these mobility models towards the performance of geographical-based route maintenance strategy in the Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol.

For the Fourth Annual 2008 Machine Learning for Signal Processing competition entrants were asked to develop a machine learning algorithm that maximizes the rate of return by trading (buying, selling, shorting, or covering) stocks over a six-month time period. Each entrant began with a (fictional) $100,000 USD. Both the training and the test set include the daily price and volume for a total of 2929 stocks that are traded in American stock markets and a total of 41 monthly indices. Stock valuations are based on real (historical) stock prices. This year there were 5 algorithms submitted. The highest annual rate of return of an astonishing 150% was obtained by Peng and Ji of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute/Shanghai Maritime University team.

An ad hoc network is multi-hop wireless formed by mobile node with no infrastructure. Due to the mobility of nodes in mobile ad hoc networks, the topology of network changes frequently. In this environments, multicast protocols are faced with the challenge of producing multi-hop routes and limitation of bandwidth. We compare the performance of two multicast routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks - serial multiple disjoint tree multicast routing protocol (serial MDTMR) and adapted core multicast routing protocol (ACMRP). The simulator is implemented with GloMoSim.

In this paper we consider an adaptive modulation system with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas in conjunction with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) operating over frequency selective Rayleigh fading environments. In particular, we consider a type of beamforming with a maximum ratio transmission, maximum ratio combining (MRT-MRC) transceiver structure. For this system we derive a central limit theorem for various block-based performance metrics. This motivates an accurate Gaussian approximation to the system data rate and the number of outages per OFDM block. In addition to data rate and outage distributions, we also consider the subcarrier SNR as a random process in the frequency domain and compute level crossing rates (LCRs) and average fade bandwidths (AFBs). Hence, we provide fundamental but novel results for the MIMO OFDM channel. The accuracy of these results is verified by Monte Carlo simulations, and applications to both performance analysis and system design are discussed.

Meeting the future requirements of higher bandwidth while providing ever more complex functions, future network processors will require a number of methods of improving processing performance. One such method will involve deeper processor pipelines to obtain higher operating frequencies. Mitigation of the penalty costs associated with deeper pipelines have achieved by implementing prediction schemes, with previous execution history used to determine future decisions. In this paper we present an analysis of common branch prediction schemes when applied to network applications. Using widespread network applications, we find that unlike general purpose processing, hit rates in excess of 95% can be obtained in a network processor using a small 256-entry single level predictor. While our research demonstrates the low silicon cost of implementing a branch predictor, the long run times of network applications can leave the majority of the predictor logic idle, increasing static power and reducing device utilization.

We develop a hybrid TCP/IP offload engine (hybrid TOE) that processes TCP/IP via hardware/software coprocessing based on an FPGA and a general-purpose embedded processor. We also develop an efficient remote direct memory access (RDMA) mechanism that is tightly coupled with the hybrid TOE. In this mechanism, the hybrid TOE performs CRC calculations using hardware modules and supports zero-copy data transmission; the host CPU simply generates and processes RDMA protocol headers. By using the hybrid TOE and the RDMA mechanism, computer systems can achieve good network performance with very low CPU utilizations, and thus they can be expected to show a great improvement in overall performance. In experiments on a gigabit Ethernet network, although the embedded processor operated with a 300 MHz core clock, which was one-seventh the speed of the host CPUpsilas clock, the hybrid TOE showed a minimum latency of 17.4 mus and a maximum bandwidth of 736 Mbps. The RDMA mechanism exhibited a minimum latency of 20.6 mus and a maximum bandwidth of 642 Mbps. Most importantly, the hybrid TOE and the TOE-based RDMA mechanism gave CPU utilizations of less than 5.6% and 8.4%, respectively-approximately one-tenth the utilizations when TCP/IP and TCP/IP-based RDMA were processed by the host CPU.

Mobile learning brings us more learning opportunities due to the characteristics of learning devices and wireless computing. Recently, game-based learning also provides promising benefits in childrenpsilas leaning. Therefore, how to design a game-based learning environment in handheld devices by combining an existing game with different learning activities is a significant research issue. In this paper, we attempt to incorporate game elements with the learning environment design in the PDA for students. Three considerations for the learning environment design in the hand-held devices are discussed: game element design, small screen design, and learner-centered design. According to these three considerations, a pet-nurturing game environment in the PDA, My-Mini-Pet system, is developed, including three components: emotional attachment, learning guidance, and costume show. The design rationale behind the My-Mini-Pet system is that taking good care of the Mini-My-Pet is actually improving the learnerpsilas learning status.
