The design and applications of a strategy-oriented hybrid intelligent controller (SOHIC) are addressed in this paper. First, two hybrid intelligent control methods will be developed, including (1) supervisory oriented genetic algorithm controller (SOGAC): it contains an oriented genetic algorithm controller (OGAC) and a supervisory controller. Compared with enunciated genetic algorithm (GA) control methods, the proposed control method possesses some salient advantages of simple framework, less executing time and good self-organizing properties even for the time-varying system; (2) supervisory grey prediction state feedback linearization controller (SGPSC): a grey uncertainty predictor will be designed to forecast the uncertainty and the predicted data will be fed to the feedback linearization controller on line. Secondly, a simple performance index function will be established according to choose one optimal control method. To verify the effectiveness, the proposed control scheme is applied to control a 3rd-order perturbed nonlinear dynamical system and a decoupling induction motor (IM) drive. The whole control system with the SOHIC possesses the advantages of simple control framework, free from chattering, stable performance and robust to uncertainties. The advantages are indicated in comparison with existing control schemes.

Electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures in a pair of parallel planes are quite effective for suppressing simultaneous switching noise, but they are too large to be applied to compact electronic devices. To miniaturize the EBG structures, we investigated an approach to interpose a high-permeability magnetic metal sheet between the parallel planes. The experimental results show that high permeability of the sheet shifts the stopband towards lower frequencies. This suggests that such sheets contribute to the miniaturization of the EBG structures. In addition, it is demonstrated that the imaginary part of the permeability can expand the stopband.

In this paper, we design a novel transmission structure called a double-tree for correlated data gathering problem for wireless sensor networks, where the goal is to minimize the total transmission cost of information collected by all sensor nodes, to the sink node. It is well-known that a tree structure is often adopted for network routing problems. However, the traditional tree transmission structure for network routing may not be an optimal structure while data correlation factors are being considered. For a given wireless sensor network, some nodes send their raw data directly to the sink, and some nodes send their encoded data based on information received from other nodes; therefore, there are two types of data in the network. Without the help of decoding/re-coding at the intermediate node, the purpose of encoded data routing is to directly send to the sink, but the purpose of raw data routing is not only to send to the sink, but also to spread raw data to other nodes as side information in encoding operations. The difference from one data type makes traditional tree structure unsuitable for the correlated data gathering problem. Therefore according to our observations, we propose a new transmission double-tree structure, which uses one tree for raw data routing, and uses another tree for encoded data routing. By employing the double-tree structure, the network can achieve lower transmission cost of gathering sensing data. Furthermore the adoption of double-tree structure always outperforms the traditional tree structure in correlated data gathering problem. We first formulate the optimization problem with a double-tree transmission structure in the general case, and prove NP-Hardness of simplified version of this problem. Then we present a 2-approximation algorithm MST+SPT that guarantees the upper bound of total transmission cost compared to the optimal solution.

When the adaptation level is not high enough, the maximum adaptation stimulus is not equal with the plot of illuminant. This property is accepted in this paper. Using this property, we propose a chromatic adaptation model for the level of adapting luminance and chromaticity in various surrounding illuminants. In this model, we calculate the maximum adapting responses using adapting degree for viewing conditions, and then we can reproduce from the original color to the corresponding color using the ratio of maximum adapting response between different viewing conditions. The proposed model will be able to guarantee reliability with stable performance and to easily be embodied as a linear model.

This tool presents a technique for visualizing large software architectures using the Multi-Dimensional Scaling Algorithm. Our visualization tool, SoftArchViz , can be used to study different architectural views that represent different attributes of the software components. We visualize the architecture of the network Appliance ™ operating system known as Data ONTAP®7G (ON-TAP) using graphical "glyphs" representing individual software components that vary their spatial position , color , and texture properties to encode the components' attribute values. We also represent the correspondence in the architecture at different stages of the development cycle and thereby identify all the components that changed and the extent of those changes, and thus evaluate the actual implementation of the architecture.

A fully-distributed collaborative multi-target tracking framework that eliminates the need for a central data associaton or a central coordinating node for wireless sensor networks is defined. Details of the distributed data association architecture, which is more feasible than the ones relying on a coordinating entity, is described. It is shown that for target tracking applications, the collaboration improves the target localization performance of the distributed data collecting devices. In order to reduce the communication energy exhausted for collaboration, the performance of the collaboration logic manager is examined. Simulation results show that collaborating about a single target information is a rational decision. The problem of deciding which target information to collaborate among the detected targets arises. A mutual information based metric is shown to be a good candidate for deciding on the target which the sensor will collaborate about with the network.

In this paper we study the problem of providing short- term access time fairness in wireless communication systems with multimedia services, while still maintaining high system throughput by exploiting the advantages of opportunistic scheduling. Our approach aims at providing elastic short-term fairness to the users by setting upper bounds on the probability of receiving an amount of service smaller than their QoS requirements. This is achieved by introducing the information of users' received service within short-term intervals into the scheduling policy. By using this information our proposed algorithm reduces the channel's condition control on the selection of the next user to receive service, especially for users that do not satisfy their short-term requirements. Moreover, by setting different values for the users' observation service intervals and by defining appropriate service deviation functions for different classes of users, we provide enhanced flexibility in the control of fairness, while still exploiting channel adaptive scheduling to achieve high throughput.

lie examine the use of WiFi repeaters to extend the range of wireless devices employed in confined space search in an Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) environment. Confined spaces are often encountered by emergency responders at disaster sites. They typically are too small or hazardous to be searched by humans but may be accessible by rescue robots controlled and monitored from outside the space. We employed a purpose-built confined space training area constructed of steel reinforced sewer tubing to determine strategies for maintaining a usable signal for devices deployed within spaces with similar characteristics at disaster sites.

The global optimization of sensor locations and a sensitivity analysis based on the minimization of interferences due to wireless communications between sensors is studied We used a Gram matrix approach for robust determination of sensor locations by minimizing the interferences (maximizing the signal strength) among sensors. Based on the spectral condition on the Frobenius norm the optimal sensor location and the effect of the noise are investigated We address the problem of optimization and sensitivity analysis in the context of system of systems where each sensor is an independent system having communications capabilities. We particularize our proposed methodology for one engine health monitoring system. The mathematical formalism is verified by simulations.

Aged motion pictures may contain different types of defects, such as spikes and scratch lines. Each type of defect has its different properties. It is relatively hard to precisely detect these defects on aged films by using only a single solution. This paper proposes two techniques to detect spikes and scratch lines on aged films. The results of defect detection have good accuracy as compared to two well-known approaches. Application of our technique can be used in the recovery of damaged aged films.
