In this paper the problem of resource allocation for the downlink in code division multiple access wireless networks supporting multimedia services is addressed. A utility based power and rate allocation algorithm which aims at optimizing system's performance while satisfying multiple services' diverse quality of service (QoS) requirements is introduced and analyzed. For the efficient support of real-time users our proposed methodology takes into account their short-term throughput QoS constraints satisfaction, which is achieved by dynamically adapting their utility functions with respect to their corresponding short-term service performance information. Through modelling and simulation it is demonstrated that significant performance improvements are achieved in terms of the short-term throughput requirement satisfaction even for large number of real-time users, without any considerable loss in the total system's throughput.

Trust information is needed for both learners and teachers in virtual university system since both have their individual activities and reports stored in database. Their behaviors including the learner's self regulations and the teacher's/virtual campus regulations are performed and built with trust development. In this paper, we present an advanced Petri net model to manage the workflow of a web- based multiple participants in virtual university based on scaffolding theory. The presented approach can conspicuously help the developer not only to comprehend the interaction relationship between the client-server virtual environments but also to easily construct a shared and trusty virtual world. Problems of providing the multi-user interaction on the Web and the solutions proposed by the Petri net model are fully elaborated here. This paper can be used as a basic/fundamental research framework and tools to study and understand the characteristics of e-learning and to explore its optimal education application.

Aged motion pictures may contain different types of defects, such as spikes and scratch lines. Several detection mechanisms were proposed to find scratches. However, it is relatively hard to precisely restore aged films if the continuation of image property is not considered in the temporal domain. This paper proposes a technique on restoring aged films based on simultaneously considering the outmost patches/pixels which are going to be inpainted. The inpainting order plays an important factor for human visualization. By eliminating the inpainting order problem, the results of restored films have good quality as compared to earlier approach. Application of our technique can be used in the restoration of aged films.

This paper studied the effect of chaos-based spreading sequences on the performance of asynchronous multi-carrier (MC) direct sequence (DS) code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. It is demonstrated that the performance of MC-DS-CDMA system employing chaotic binary sequences can be superior to that for conventional codes in terms of bit error probabilities.

Detecting errors early within the development process for an embedded system assists a developer in avoiding excessive error correction costs and minimizing catastrophic losses resulting from failures in deployed systems. Towards that end, this paper presents i2MAP, an iterative and incremental goal-driven process for constructing an analysis-level UML model of an embedded system. The UML model is formally analyzed for adherence to the behavioral properties captured in a companion goal model. The process uses goal modeling to capture the requirements of the system, and uses UML to capture analysis-level structural and behavioral information. Both types of i2MAP models can be used to drive a rigorous approach to model-driven development of embedded systems. In this paper, we illustrate the i2MAP process and the accompanying tool suite in the development of an embedded system model for an adaptive light control system.

Particle swarm optimizer (PSO) is a population- based evolutionary algorithm which is widely adopted due to its simple implementation and fast convergence. But, when optimizing complex problems, PSO may lead to premature convergence. In this paper, inspired by the core idea of the tabu search algorithm, we incorporate the tabu strategy and propose a revised PSO with a view to increase population diversity and to reduce the repeated attractions by local minima. The two-stage searching strategy offers a good trade-off between exploration and exploitation and meanwhile, experimental results show significant performance improvements on seven benchmark functions.

This paper addresses the problem of optimizing the adaptive power allocation for data transmission over wireless communication fading channels using multiple transmit antennas with band-limited feedback channel. The objective of the optimization is to minimize the bit error rate (BER) subject to constraint on the average transmitted power. The chosen multi-antenna transmission scheme is the transmit antenna selection, which requires limited number of feedback bits. The adaptive power allocation is chosen to have finite levels of allocated power so that the system will still require limited number of feedback bits when the proposed adaptive power allocation scheme is combined. The allocated power of each level will be optimally determined. This has to be done with regarding to the employment of antenna selection. In order to achieve this goal, the formula of the BER of the system using transmit antenna selection scheme as a function of allocated power level is first derived. Then, the obtained formula is solved for optimal allocated power of each level. The obtained results shows that the advantageous features of two different techniques, namely antenna selection and the adaptive power allocation, can be combined effectively to combat fading using limited feedback information. Numerical results of the systems with 2-transmit and 3-transmit antenna are used here to demonstrate that substantial BER performance improvement can be achieved by using even only a few power adaptation levels.

We studied the possibility of using wireless sensor networks for vehicle identification. It is interesting because it is not only challenging but also practical. It is challenging to develop algorithms and/or protocols for sensor nodes to execute since each sensor node has limited computation and communication capabilities, and these limitations prohibit the use of algorithms and/or protocols developed for conventional computer and networks. It is practical since each sensor is dispensable and easily deployable, yet it can do meaningful works when it is collaborated as a networked cluster. Our goal is to identify vehicles in real time using acoustic signal sensors and wireless networks. Our contribution in this paper is two fold. First, we develop a simple vehicle sound identification algorithm enough to be implemented on capacity limited sensor nodes. Second, we propose architecture and protocols of wireless sensor networks for vehicle identification using this developed sound classification algorithm. Our preliminary results show the proposed architecture and protocols are promising.

We present a packet forwarding method for the implementation of the iSCSI virtualization switch used in the SANs. Using the existing virtualization software plus network protocol stacks, first we build up a network-based storage virtualization switch model in the architecture of the symmetric approach. In compliance with the same functionality, our method can reduce the overheads of protocol processing by using a packet forwarding method based on caching the structure ID of the iSCSI session. With the Address Translator and Duplicating Handler, our design can also achieve the feature of storage virtualization management. From the result of our performance experiment, our forwarding system can achieve a higher performance on the READ/WRITE operations by 25% ~30% and reduce the CPU utilization by 10% ~15% compared to the conventional virtualization switch.
