We derived analytic expressions for the modulation response and the relative intensity noise of a wavelength-locked F-P LD. The analytic results have good agreement with the simulation results.

Phonon runaway in carbon nanotube quantum dots

We explore electronic transport in a nanotube quantum dot strongly coupled with vibrations and weakly with leads and the thermal environment. We show that the recent observation of anomalous conductance signatures in single-walled carbon nanotube quantum dots [B. J. LeRoy et al., Nature (London) 395, 371 (2004) and B. J. LeRoy et al., Phys. Rev. B 72, 075413 (2005)] can be understood quantitatively in terms of current driven “hot phonons” that are strongly correlated with electrons. Using rate equations in the many-body configuration space for the joint electron-phonon distribution, we argue that the variations are indicative of strong electron-phonon coupling requiring an analysis beyond the traditional uncorrelated phonon-assisted transport (Tien-Gordon) approach.

Individual ability differences are an everlasting phenomenon in a classroom. Competitive learning games that aim at drawing students' attention and excitement will inevitably hurt the self-esteem of those students with lower-skill levels. This paper describes the design of a small group competitive classroom game called AnswerMatching. Besides, we propose an approach to resolving the individual ability difference problem, called uneven chance tactic. A pilot study of the game with this tactic is also reported.

To reduce frequent changes and upgrades of management systems, we need a guideline of OSS's architecture and development methods of the OSSs. TMF has proposed NGOSS technology-neutral architecture (TNA) which describes major concepts and architectural details of the NGOSS architecture in a technologically neutral manner. The NGOSS TNA can be mapped onto appropriate technology-specific architectures (TSAs) using specific technologies such as XML, Java and CORBA Web services, which is a distributed and services-oriented computing technology, can be applied to NGOSS TSA. In this paper, we examine the architectural requirements of TNA, and provide a design of Web services- based TSA in accordance with the TNA requirements.

Software reengineering involves the activities of studying target system's architecture. However, enterprise legacy software systems tend to be large and complex. The analysis of system architecture therefore becomes a difficult task. To solve the problem, we propose an approach that decomposes software architecture to reduce the complexity associated with analyzing large scale architecture artifacts. Our study has shown that architecture decomposition is an efficient way to limit the complexity and risk associated with the re-engineering activities of a large legacy system. It divides the system into a collection of meaningful modular parts with low coupling, high cohesion, and minimizes the interface, thus to facilitate the incremental approach to implement the progressive software re-engineering process. To fulfill this goal, we have developed two major techniques to decompose legacy system architecture. In this paper, we present them in detail. The approach is also supported by our automated reverse engineering tools, and the preliminary experimental result shows our approach is very promising. Copyright 2007 ACM.

National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) is an academic hospital having over hundred years' history and large scale. There are existing problems in the NTUH portal site. It contains multi-system entrances and display, maintenance of numerous function linkages. In here, we design a new portal site to solve these problems. The single sign on service (SSOS) solves the multi-system entrance problem. For the function linkage problem, we design dynamic, hierarchical drop-down navigation menus to enlarge the browsing capacity for covering over 250 function links and two bulletins in one page. The XML formatted configuration files are designed to dynamically establish function linkages. The approach makes the linkage management easier. Moreover, we maintain configuration parameters, i.e., access control capabilities, linkage modes and multi-server redirections, as well as target control, in configuration files. All these features enhance NTUH portal site administration flexible and usage intuitive. In addition, the future works have been addressed clearly.

Flip chip bonding technology has been widely used for interconnection in high-end logic LSI employing lead-rich solder bumps. Recently, from an environmental issue, it is desired that the lead-rich solder should be replaced by lead-free solder. However, the stress at the interconnection after flip chip bonding reflow cannot be relaxed with lead-free solder bumps because of their poor creep properties. Since the stress causes delamination of the low-k layer under bumps and electrical open errors, the improvement of the solder bump material and the flip chip bonding process have been necessary for stress relaxation. In this study, we investigated the creep properties of Sn-0.7Cu and Sn-3.5Ag bumps by the indentation method. As a result, it was found that the creep properties of Sn-0.7Cu bumps was more suitable for stress relaxation than those of Sn-3.5Ag. Moreover, we confirmed that a low-stress interconnection had been achieved by employing Sn-0.7Cu bumps. The stress at the interconnection was less than the delaminating stress of the low-k layer. In addition, when the flip chip bonding was carried out by the reflow with the post-annealing, in which the temperature was held for a period of time at 200degC during reflow cooling part, the maximum stress in the low-k layer has been reduced by more than 36% in comparison with the low-k delaminating stress. Furthermore, it was found that the stresses at the flip chip joints were relaxed because of the increase of the creep rate which was caused by the reflow with the post-annealing.

An intercarrier interference (ICI) canceling technique for multiple-input single-output (MISO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in fast fading channels is proposed. The proposed scheme consists of a linear space-frequency block code (SFBC) at the transmitter and a receive frequency block code (RFBC) at the receiver. The code design is based on the upper bound of pairwise error probability (PEP) which is derived under assumptions and approximations stated. Specifically, the proposed code is designed to minimize the upper bound of the PEP. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed technique outperforms the conventional methods in fast fading environments.

Nowadays GRID computing issues become urgent. GRID quality of service (QoS) importance grows together with the development of GRID technology. The importance of QoS of the GRID lies in at least three aspects: the concept of GRID service, the multiplicity of users' demands, and the heterogeneity of GRID resources (Pit Juhua, Xiong Zhang and Wit Zhenxing. The Research On QoS For Grid Computing.). Besides discussing critical GRID QoS parameters, this article also suggests the methods to obtain them. This article also introduces an experiment proving the efficiency of the methodology.

network-on-chip (NoC) is generally regarded as the most promising solution for the future on-chip communication scheme in giga-scale integrated circuits. As traditional debug architecture for bus-based systems is not readily applicable to identify bugs in NoC-based systems, in this paper, we present a novel debug platform that supports concurrent debug access to the cores under debug (CUDs) and the NoC in a unified architecture. By introducing core-level debug probes in between the CUDs and their network interfaces and a system-level debug agent controlled by an off-chip multi-core debug controller, the proposed debug platform provides in-depth analysis features for NoC-based systems, such as NoC transaction analysis, multi-core cross-triggering and global synchronized timestamping. Therefore, the proposed solution is expected to facilitate the designers to identify bugs in NoC-based systems more effectively and efficiently. Experimental results show that the design-for-debug cost for the proposed technique in terms of area and traffic requirements is moderate
