Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

In recent years, research in wireless sensor networks (WSN) has been undergoing a quiet revolution, promising to have significant impact on a broad range of applications relating to environmental monitoring, structural health monitoring, security and water safety. The convergence of the Internet, telecommunications, and novel information technologies with techniques for miniaturisation now provides vast opportunities for the development and application of low-cost monitoring solutions which could drastically increase the spatial and temporal resolution of environmental data. The paper describes the development of a prototype monitoring system which bridges advances in wireless sensor networks with advances in hydraulic and water quality modeling. The prototype monitoring system was deployed at Boston Water and Sewer Commission (BWSC) in December 2004, and it has been successfully collecting and charting near-real time hydraulic and water quality data as well as data from combined sewer outflows (CSO). The remote monitoring system has unique functionalities in terms of sampling rates (up to 1000 S/s), time synchronization (up to 1 ms) and in-network processing. These features create novel opportunities for wirelessly collecting data for applications such as hydraulic pressure transients, remote acoustic leak detection together with low-duty cycle applications such as monitoring water quality parameters and water levels in CSOs. The trial with BWSC has been tremendously useful to prototype hardware and software tools, and to identify deployment and operational challenges in using sensor networks for monitoring and management of large scale water supply systems. The paper presents a multi-tier, integrated, distributed, inpatient healthcare information system based on service oriented architecture (SOA) .NET environment in National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). The architecture and outcomes of the newly developed inpatient information system (IIS) platform are discussed in details. We also present mechanisms of integration as well as interoperability among the components and multi-database in IIS via health level seven (HL7) Middleware layer. The preliminary performance of the current operating IIS is evaluated and analyzed to verify the efficiency and effectiveness of the architecture we designed.

Using the direct time domain approach and thermooptic properties of silica, we show that a single spectrally periodic filter can generate any 4-bit binary amplitude and phase code pattern. We design and analyze a tunable 6-stage lattice-form Mach-Zehnder interferometer using silica-on-silicon planar lightwave circuit technology for generating 40 GHz pulse trains with arbitrary binary amplitude and phase code profiles from a uniform 10 GHz input pulse train.

To meet the data transport demands of large-scale applications, several research and production networks now offer dedicated connections between client subnets or hosts. Such dedicated connections can be provisioned using two fundamentally different technologies: (i) SONET or Ethernet connections over switched networks; and (ii) MPLS tunnels over routed networks. Since these two options represent significantly different cost-benefit trade-offs, performance comparison between the connections provisioned using them is essential to making deployment decisions. We compare 1 Gbps dedicated connections with lengths up to several thousand miles over UltraScience Net and ESnet, wherein the dedicated connections are implemented as SONET connections and MPLS tunnels, respectively. In terms of bandwidth measurements, throughput profiles, file transfer rates and message delays, both types of connections offer comparable performances. Furthermore, these performance parameters are preserved when hybrid connections are composed by concatenating SONET connections and MPLS tunnels using VLANs implemented on them.

The marginal distributions of arbitrarily ranked eigenvalues of the Wishart matrix are derived in (R. Kwan et al, 2007). In this paper, the result is used to obtain a simple, exact analytical expression for the average symbol error rate (ASER) in a multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) system with multiple beamforming (MB) in a Rayleigh fading environment. A good approximation to the outage probability (OP) of the system is also provided. The results show that both ASER and OP are important performance measures in the analysis of MB-MIMO systems. The result in (R. Kwan et al, 2007) is also used to study the ergodic capacity of MIMO systems which use antenna subset selection.

Bingo is a universally known, popular, and easy-to-play game. Following bingo rules with some modifications, we have designed and implemented a game, called EduBingo, for practicing mathematics fractions. The game was implemented and experimented in a 'one-to-one' technology enhanced classroom, where every student learns with a wireless enabled computing device. The experiment investigated students' preferences, system usability, as well as the effects on their affective states of a grade 4 class with 22 students. The result of the questionnaire indicates that the usability of EduBingo is acceptable and there was increase of various affective levels of the students. The data collected by the system, after analysis, implies that, for most students, accuracy and efficiency of solving fraction questions increased. The preliminary result also suggests some directions for further research.

This study proposes the application of the MCSCL groupware for the hearing-impaired students to engage in learning the mathematics word problems. This groupware, which integrates the collaborative argumentation theory, the scaffolding tools, and the comic, is to be applied in the activities of the collaborative learning. We present the system architecture which describes the implementation based on integration of the PDA, the network technology, and the learning strategy. Furthermore, this study employed the groupware as a channel for the hearing-impaired students to improve the experience of learning the mathematics word problems.

Collaborative learning is widely used in classroom activities. The screens of handheld devices, being designed for individual-user mobile application, limit promotive interaction among groups of learners. The small size of screen may lead to fragmented and tete-a-tete communication pattern, and frequently obstacle the externalization of student learning process. This study proposes a shared display groupware with handheld devices in order to support the externalization and articulation of student thinking. The groupware is designed for exploring whether the shared display system in classrooms can augment the handheld devices to promote the student articulation process and communication among participants.

To support high data rates, CDMA lx Ev- DO utilizes TDMA technology on the downlink allowing a single receiver per time slot. Accordingly, a scheduling algorithm is necessary to determine which user receives data in a given time slot. Typically, schedulers consider efficiency (increasing network throughput) or fairness (fair allocation of resources among users) as the basis for scheduling. To realize a reasonable tradeoff between efficiency and fairness, opportunistic schedulers have been proposed that take advantage of instantaneous improvements in users radio conditions by serving them at higher rates. However, given the increasing demand to support user QoS requirements, a QoS-aware scheduler may need to serve users even at times of inadequate radio conditions. In this paper, we propose a QoS-aware packet scheduling algorithm that takes into account policy rules that govern the relationships between different user QoS classes. Our scheduler uses marginal utility functions defined to embody the given rules when selecting users to be served on the downlink. Our scheduling algorithm is implemented in the OPNET module of the CDMA lx Ev-DO system that we have developed, and its performance is compared to other scheduling algorithms. The simulation results show that our scheduler performs well ensuring the policy rules are followed, meeting users' QoS requirements, and providing fairness among users within the same QoS class.
