Puzzles can be regarded as problem-solving games, in which players have to solve the obstacle they confront. Solving puzzles helps players to foster logical thinking and to facilitate problem-solving strategies. In this paper, we base on four puzzle games, magic square, jigsaw puzzle, sudoku, and kakuro, and then we design a number puzzle game, called number jigsaw puzzle (NJP). In solving NJP, players could construct their problem-solving strategies according to their previous knowledge. A pilot study was conducted to investigate what strategies the players would use in solving NJP. The result shows that the five different strategies had been found in the pilot study.

In this paper, we present a new segmentation model, which makes uses of Curvelet's advantages of edge preserving and noise averaging. The model first applies Lorentzian-function based diffusion for stable pixel clustering, and then projects boundaries by Curvelet transform (CT) to enhance edges and modify region smear in diffusion. In particular, we also propose a criterion to seek the appropriate moment for CT enhancement, it is fulfilled by comparing partition results of Lorentzian and Tukey-based functions. If the number of reduced regions between two adjacent segmentation rounds arrives a threshold, CT will be performed to prevent edge disappearing. Experiments show that this significant segmentation is resulted from CT's properties of boundary keeping and denoising, the method is superior to many other PDE approaches.

Transfer-based statistical translation of Taiwanese sign language using PCFG

This article presents a transfer-based statistical model for Chinese to Taiwanese sign-language (TSL) translation. Two sets of probabilistic context-free grammars (PCFGs) are derived from a Chinese Treebank and a bilingual parallel corpus. In this approach, a three-stage translation model is proposed. First, the input Chinese sentence is parsed into possible phrase structure trees (PSTs) based on the Chinese PCFGs. Second, the Chinese PSTs are then transferred into TSL PSTs according to the transfer probabilities between the context-free grammar (CFG) rules of Chinese and TSL derived from the bilingual parallel corpus. Finally, the TSL PSTs are used to generate the possible translation results. The Viterbi algorithm is adopted to obtain the best translation result via the three-stage translation. For evaluation, three objective evaluation metrics including AER, Top-N, and BLUE and one subjective evaluation metric using MOS were used. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms the IBM Model 3 in the task of Chinese to sign-language translation. © 2007 ACM.

This paper discusses the personality of genetic robot and its evolving algorithm within the purview of the broader ubiquitous robot framework. Ubiquitous robot systems blends mobile robot technology (Mobot) with distributed sensor systems (Embot) and overseeing software intelligence (Sobot), for various integrated services. The Sobot is a critical question since it performs the dual purpose of overseeing intelligence as well as user interface. The Sobot is hence modelled as an artificial creature with autonomously driven behavior. The artificial creature has its own genome and in which each chromosome consists of many genes that contribute to defining its personality. This paper proposes evolving the personality of an artificial creature. A genome population is evolved such that it customized the genome satisfying a set of personality traits desired by the user. Evaluation procedure for each genome of the population is carried out in a virtual environment. Effectiveness of this scheme is demonstrated by using an artificial creature, Rity in the virtual 3D world created in a PC.

This paper proposes the evolutionary generation of an artificial creature's personality by using the concept of multi-objective optimization. The artificial creature has its own genome and in which each chromosome consists of many genes that contribute to defining its personality. The large number of genes allows for a highly complex system, however it becomes increasingly difficult and time-consuming to ensure reliability, variability and consistency for the artificial creature's personality while manually assigning gene values for the individual genome. Moreover, there needs user's preference to obtain artificial creature's personality by using evolutionary generation. Preference is strongly depend on each user and most of them would have difficulty to define their preference as a fitness function. To solve this problem, this paper proposes multi-objective generating process of an artificial creature's personality. Genome set is evolved by applying strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA). To facilitate the individuality of generated artificial creature, complement of (1-k) dominance and pruning method considering deviation are proposed. Obtained genomes are tested by using an artificial creature, Rity in the virtual 3D world created in a PC.

The Stark shift of the hyperfine coupling constant is investigated for a P donor in Si far below the ionization regime in the presence of interfaces using tight-binding and band minima basis approaches and compared to the recent precision measurements. In contrast with previous effective mass-based results, the quadratic Stark coefficient obtained from both theories agrees closely with the experiments. It is also shown that there is a significant linear Stark effect for an impurity near the interface, whereas, far from the interface, the quadratic Stark effect dominates. This work represents the most sensitive and precise comparison between theory and experiment for single donor spin control. Such precise control of single donor spin states is required particularly in quantum computing applications of single donor electronics, which forms the driving motivation of this work.

This paper presents the components and overall architecture of the ubiquitous robot (Ubibot) system developed to demonstrate ubiquitous robotics, a new paradigm for integrated services. The system has been developed on the basis of the definition of the ubiquitous robot as that of encompassing the software robot Sobot, embedded robot Embot and the mobile robot Mobot. This tripartite partition, which independently manifests intelligence, perception and action, enables the abstraction of intelligence through the standardization of sensory data and motor or action commands. The Ubibot system itself is introduced along with its component subsystems of Embots, the position Embot, vision Embot and sound Embot, the Mobots of Mybot and HSR, the Sobot, Rity, a virtual pet modeled as an artificial creature, and finally the middleware which seamlessly enables interconnection between other components. Three kinds of experiments are devised to demonstrate the fundamental features, of calm sensing, context awareness and seamless service transcending the spatial limitations in the abilities of earlier generation personal robots. The experiments demonstrate the proof of concept of this powerful new paradigm which shows great promise.

The WATERS network (WATer and Environmental Research Systems network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. In this paper we discuss key architecture and design considerations associated with the development of a control plane capable of dynamic provisioning in this heterogeneous multi-domain, multi-layer, multi-service hybrid network environment . We present a framework for addressing the heterogeneous nature of the hybrid networks via the development of a flexible set of mechanisms which address the key control plane functions of routing, path computation and signaling. An interoperable set of constructs are proposed based on GMPLS and Web service for seamless provisioning across heterogeneous data and control planes. This paper also includes a discussion of our recent design and implementation efforts to instantiate these concepts on ESnet, USN, and the Internet2 networks.

We investigate the differences of the influences between robot and virtual learning companions on students' engagement. From the analysis of our experimental result and interview, we found that virtual learning companion and robot learning companion both rose up students' motivation and engagement. The differences between these two types of learning companions is that one of them made subjects more concentrated on the task and the other extended subjects' time on task. We shall offer some advices for the researchers who design learning companion systems.
