An energy-efficient collaborative target tracking paradigm is developed for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The network lifetime is prolonged by selecting a subset of sensors that are informative and provide non-redundant data so that a desired accuracy level is maintained. A distributed data fusion architecture provides the collaborative tracking framework. A mutual information-based sensor selection algorithm (MISS) is adopted for participation in the fusion process. MISS allows the most informative subset of the sensors to transmit data so that in the energy consumption is reduced while the desired accuracies of the target position estimation are preserved. Simulation results that demonstrate the performance improvement offered by the MISS algorithm are also furnished.

The agility, sense of smell, hearing and speed of dogs is put to good use by dedicated canine teams involved in Search and Rescue operations. Perhaps the weakest link in the human-dog team is the human. In comparison to dogs, humans hear less, cannot effectively follow a scent and actually slow the dog down when involved in area searches. To mitigate this problem the network-Centric Applied Research Team has been working with the Ontario Provincial Police to augment SAR dogs with a suite of supporting technologies to extend the dog's potential area of operation and allow a greater distance between dog and handler. Through Canine Augmentation Technology we hope to allow, canine handlers to see what the dog sees, hear what the dog hears, know where the dog is and be able to communicate with the dog at extended distances.

With the growth of Internet users and services, the IP address has been exhausted. In order to solve this problem, the short term solution was presented, i.e., CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing). The long term solution for insufficient IP addresses is the IPv6 protocol which was defined by IETF (Internet engineering Task Force)'. The length of IPv6 address is 128 bits that can avoid the IP address exhaustion. In this paper, a complete hardware for IPv6 routing lookup architecture is proposed. It is composed of routing lookup ASIC and memory set. In our system, the simple hash hardware is used to reduce the lookup time, and the CAM (Content Addressable Memory) is used to solve the collision problem effectively. In our performance analysis, 91.89% routing entries of the routing table can be searched in one memory access, and the worst case about 10% needs two memory accesses. The CAM in the ASIC is used as cache memory with FIFO replacement algorithm. The routing lookup system approaches 213.4Mlps (109.26Gb/s). It is enough to satisfy the high speed link OC-768 (40Gb/s) with 150000 routing entries.

Natural gas hydrates may contain more energy than all the combined other fossil fuels, causing hydrates to be a potentially vital aspect of both energy and climate change. This article is an overview of the motivation, history, and future of hydrate data management using a CODATA vehicle to connect international hydrate databases. The basis is an introduction to the Gas Hydrate Markup Language (GHML) to connect various hydrate databases. The accompanying four articles on laboratory hydrate data by Smith et al., on field hydrate data by Löwner et al., on hydrate modeling by Wang et al., and on construction of a Chinese gas hydrate system by Xiao et al. provide details of GHML in their respective areas.

The paper makes two contributions to the study of A/V streaming service: (1) introduces a service management mechanism for monitoring and controlling resource utilities to enhance quality of service guarantees;(2) improves the security of A/V streaming service and reduces the complexity of encryption computations by applying CORBA security services in conjunction of the wavelet compression and encryption technology for multimedia data. This letter presents a simple but accurate analytical model to evaluate the throughput of IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function in non-saturated conditions. The influence of offered load on the throughput of both basic and RTS/CTS access mechanisms are analyzed and compared. It's shown that basic access scheme can achieve the same maximal throughput as that of RTS/CTS mechanism in non-saturated conditions while the latter is robust to the number of contending stations compared to basic mechanism. The analytical results are validated by extensive simulations.
