A human listener has the ability to follow a speaker's voice while others are speaking simultaneously;in particular, the listener can organize the time-frequency energy of the same speaker across time into a single stream. In this paper, we focus on sequential organization in cochannel speech, or mixtures of two voices. We extract minimally corrupted segments, or usable speech, in cochannel speech using a robust multipitch tracking algorithm. The extracted usable speech is shown to capture speaker characteristics and improves speaker identification (SID) performance across various target-to-interferer ratios. To utilize speaker characteristics for sequential organization, we extend the traditional SID framework to cochannel speech and derive a joint objective for sequential grouping and SID, leading to a problem of search for the optimum hypothesis. Subsequently we propose a hypothesis pruning algorithm based on speaker models in order to make the search computationally efficient. Evaluation results show that the proposed system approaches the ceiling SID performance obtained with prior pitch information and yields significant improvement over alternative approaches to sequential organization. © 2006 IEEE.

Data Warehouses (DWs) use an omnipresent time dimension for keeping track of changes in measure values. However, this dimension cannot be used to model changes in other dimensions. On the other hand, Temporal Databases (TDBs) have been successfully used for modelling time-varying information. Bringing together these two research areas, leading to Temporal Data Warehouses (TDWs), provides the necessary solutions for managing time-varying data in dimensions. In this paper, we introduce temporal extensions for the MultiDimER model, a conceptual multidimensional model. In our model we allow the inclusion of valid and transaction time, which are obtained from source systems, in addition to the data warehouse loading time. Our model allows a conceptual representation of time-varying levels, attributes, and hierarchies. For the latter, we discuss different cases depending on whether the changes in levels affect the relationships between them.

Performance in multihop wireless networks is known to degrade with the number of hops for both TCP and UDP traffic. For VoIP, the wireless network presents additional challenges as the perceived quality is dependent on loss, delay and jitter. Furthermore, small size of VoIP packets aggravates network utilization of the 802.11 based wireless mesh network. In this work, we evaluate the packet aggregation algorithms to reduce VoIP protocol overhead, compare the aggregation algorithms and propose a distributed packet aggregation mechanism. The experimental results demonstrates that the proposed distributed packet aggregation algorithm improves the VoIP quality and results in significant increase in the number high quality VoIP calls supported over multihop mesh. © 2006 IEEE.

In many cryptographic applications, the finite field is usually defined as the normal basis representation, and accordingly, many researchers on a fast implement of such a basis are reported. By restricting the characteristics of an optimal normal basis (ONB) of type-II, we use the palindromic representation of type-II ONB to derive a new linear array multiplier. This GF(2m) arithmetic circuit is designed to the flexibility requirement for allowing it to still operate as a GF(2n) arithmetic circuit with n&lem.

In a 802.11 based mobile ad hoc network (MANET), the routing protocol may wrongly assume that a route is broken due to temporal packet loss in connectivity arising from multiple packet collisions, which we term as a false route breakage. In this paper, we investigate the impact of false route breakages in MANETs. It is found that false route breakage is dependent on the size of packets transmitted in a network and the path length of a source-destination pair. We present a protocol enhancement to the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol which increases the reliability of wireless links by reducing false route breakages. We achieve the goal of alleviating false route breakages by initiating a HELLO message to the sender whenever the number of RTS received by a receiver exceeds a threshold. The simulation results show that the proposed modification substantially reduces the false route breakages and improves throughput by up to 35%

The Wireless Integrated MicroSystems (WIMS) engineering Research Center (ERC) has developed a broad comprehensive MEMS and microsystem curriculum suitable for upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, and industry professionals. Five core courses were in the initial curriculum design. The design had flexibility that invited development of other core courses, as well as related technical electives and breadth electives. The core courses provide instruction in MEMS, Microsystems, major design and laboratory measurements, and societal impact. The course enrollments have been strong. A master of engineering in integrated microsystems degree program was developed so that industry professionals would have a focused set of coursework, while providing flexibility that would permit custom tailoring of the total course package to serve specific needs. Distance education dissemination of the courses as whole courses, or as discrete portions of course materials, was intended to be available;that goal has been realized. The core courses originate at the University of Michigan (UM), and have been distributed to Michigan State University (MSU), Michigan Technological University (MTU), Howard University (HU), University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez (UPRM), and Western Michigan University (WMU). Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has used materials from the UM core courses in its offerings. Other institutions that have used the course web-streaming video and course materials are University of Lille, Darmstadt University, and Middle East Technical University. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

Achieving acceptable quality of service in highly dynamic computing environments requires not only adaptation and reconfiguration of individual components of the system, but also collaboration among these components. To address these issues in adaptive multimedia applications, we propose COCA, a contract-based collaborative adaptation infrastructure. COCA uses contract specifications to describe the relationships among different system components, to generate code that realizes adaptive functionality, and to govern system-wide adaptive behavior during execution. COCA also provides a set of reusable adaptation services that enable legacy components to be integrated into an adaptive system. We demonstrate the use of COCA to construct an adaptive multimedia conferencing system from a collection of existing components that were not originally designed for interoperation.

We present a simple, local protocol, pCover, which provides partial (but high) coverage in sensor networks. Through pCover, we demonstrate that it is feasible to maintain a high coverage (~90%) while significantly increasing coverage duration when compared with protocols that provide full coverage. In particular, we show that we are able to maintain 94% coverage for a duration that is 2.3-7 times the duration for which existing protocols maintain full coverage. Through simulations, we show that our protocol provides load balancing, i.e., the desired level of coverage is maintained (almost) until the point where all sensors deplete their batteries

Electromagnetic (EM) simulation of electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures is computationally expensive when multiple iterations are required. For the first time, in this paper, a novel synthesis method for designing EBG structures has been proposed. The method consists of three major approaches: current path approximation method (CPA-Method), border to border radius (B2BR), and power loss method (PLM). CPA-Method is based on the current flow on a periodically patterned power/ground plane. CPA-Method gives a final dimension of EBG structure for a desired stop band frequency. B2BR determines the maximum number of patches implementable within a given area. PLM calculates isolation level of an EBG structure based on the transmitted power. The proposed approaches have been combined together to synthesize an EBG structure for a given specification. The synthesized EBG structure with these approaches has been fabricated and verified with EM simulation and measurement. The EBG structure has shown excellent stop band and isolation level agreements with the desired specification. ©2006 IEEE.

In this paper, an adaptive fuzzy controller design is proposed for a class of time-delay system with input containing sector nonlinearities and dead-zone. First fuzzy systems are applied to estimate the bound of the lumped perturbation and the uncertainties. Based on Lyapunov theorem, a control law and adaptive laws are proposed to guarantee the stability of the overall system. Finally, a computer simulation example is used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed control strategy.
