In this paper, a piecewise H infin controller design is proposed for a class of T-S fuzzy systems with time-delay. For a given T-S fuzzy system, we design the observer to estimate the states and the controller to guarantee the global stability with H infin performance of the resulting closed loop fuzzy control system. Subsequently, the controller design problem is characterized in terms of three LMIs, the first one is for the control gain with the current states, the second one is for the control gain with the time-delay states, and the third one is for observer gain. Finally, a simulation example illustrates the design procedure and demonstrates the performance of the proposed control strategy.

In this paper we develop a novel, comprehensive method for estimating the global human carrying capacity in reference to food production factors and levels of food consumption. Other important interrelated dimensions of carrying capacity such as energy, non-renewable resources, and ecology are not considered here and offer opportunities for future work. Use of grain production (rain-fed/irrigated), animal product production (grazing/factory farm), diet pattern (grain/animal products), and a novel water accounting method (demand/supply) based on actual water consumption and not on withdrawal, help resolve uncertainties to find better estimates. Current Western European food consumption is used as a goal for the entire world. Then the carrying capacity lies in the range of 4.5-4.7 billion but requiring agricultural water use increase by 450-530% to 4725-5480 km³, the range based on different estimates of available water. The cost of trapping and conveying such water, will run 4.5-13.5 trillion over 50 years requiring an annual spending increase of 150-400%, straining the developing world where most of the population increase is expected. We reconfirm estimates in the literature using a dynamic model. 'Corner scenarios' with extreme optimistic assumptions were analyzed using the reasoning support software system GLOBESIGHT. With a hypothetical scenario with a mainly vegetarian diet (grazing only with 5% animal product), the carrying capacity can be as high as 14 billion. Ecological deterioration that surely accompanies such a population increase would negatively impact sustainable population. Using our approach the impact of ecological damage could be studied. Inter- and intra-regional inequities are other considerations that need to be studied. © Springer 2006.

Cluster file systems and storage area networks (SAN) make use of network IO to achieve higher IO bandwidth. Effective integration of networking mechanisms is important to their performance. In this paper, we perform an evaluation of a popular cluster file system, Lustre, over two of the leading high speed cluster interconnects: InfiniBand and Quadrics. Our evaluation is performed with both sequential IO and parallel IO benchmarks in order to explore the capacity of Lustre under different communication characteristics. Experimental results show that direct implementations of Lustre over both interconnects can improve its performance, compared to an IP emulation over InfiniBand (IPoIB). The performance of Lustre over Quadrics is comparable to that of Lustre over InfiniBand with the platforms we have. Latest InfiniBand products can embrace latest technologies, such as PCI-Express and DDR, and provide higher capacity. Our results show that over a Lustre file system with two object storage fervers (OSSs), InfiniBand with PCI-Express technology can improve Lustre write performance by 24%. Furthermore, our experimental results indicate that Lustre meta-data operations do not scale with an increasing number of OSSs, in spite of using high performance interconnects

As multi-core systems gain popularity for their increased computing power at low-cost, the rest of the architecture must be kept in balance, such as the memory subsystem. Many existing memory subsystems can suffer from scalability issues and show memory performance degradation with more than one process running. To address these scalability issues, fully-buffered DIMMs have recently been introduced. In this paper we present an initial performance evaluation of the next-generation multi-core Intel platform by evaluating the FB-DIMM-based memory subsystem and the associated InfiniBand performance. To the best of our knowledge this is the first such study of Intel multi-core platforms with multi-rail InfiniBand DDR configurations. We provide an evaluation of the current-generation Intel Lindenhurst platform as a reference point. We find that the Intel Bensley platform can provide memory scalability to support memory accesses by multiple processes on the same machine as well as drastically improved inter-node throughput over InfiniBand. On the Bensley platform we observe a 1.85 times increase in aggregate write bandwidth over the Lindenhurst platform. For inter-node MPI-level benchmarks we show bi-directional bandwidth of over 4.55 GB/sec for the Bensley platform using 2 DDR InfiniBand host channel adapters (HCAs), an improvement of 77% over the current generation Lindenhurst platform. The Bensley system is also able to achieve a throughput of 3.12 million MPI messages/sec in the above configuration

Supporting scalable and efficient parallel programs is a major challenge in parallel computing with the widespread adoption of large-scale computer clusters and supercomputers. One of the pronounced scalability challenges is the management of connections between parallel processes, especially over connection-oriented interconnects such as VIA and InfiniBand. In this paper, we take on the challenge of designing efficient connection management for parallel programs over InfiniBand clusters. We propose adaptive connection management (ACM) to dynamically control the establishment of InfiniBand reliable connections (RC) based on the communication frequency between MPI processes. We have investigated two different ACM algorithms: an on-demand algorithm that starts with no InfiniBand RC connections; and a partial static algorithm with only 2 * logN number of InfiniBand RC connections initially. We have designed and implemented both ACM algorithms in MVAPICH to study their benefits. Two mechanisms have been exploited for the establishment of new RC connections: one using InfiniBand unreliable datagram and the other using InfiniBand connection management. For both mechanisms, MPI communication issues, such as progress rules, reliability and race conditions are handled to ensure efficient and lightweight connection management. Our experimental results indicate that ACM algorithms can benefit parallel programs in terms of the process initiation time, the number of active connections, and the resource usage. For parallel programs on a 16-node cluster, they can reduce the process initiation time by 15% and the initial memory usage by 18%.

A promising application for RFID tags is to trace valuable assets in an inventory. In such systems, the key challenge is to achieve reliable and energy-efficient tag reads. This paper proposes a novel tag reading protocol, Relay-MAC, which aims at reducing the information sent over the network and the energy spent in collision detection and handling by introducing deliberate sequencing at runtime. This paper provides an in-depth study of the design issues one may face in implementing such a protocol on RFID tags, and validates its feasibility using simulation studies. These studies clearly demonstrate that Relay- MAC can yield much better throughput and energy conservation when compared to a conventional select-and-read protocol.

InfiniBand is an emerging HPC interconnect being deployed in very large scale clusters, with even larger InfiniBand-based clusters expected to be deployed in the near future. The message passing interface (MPI) is the programming model of choice for scientific applications running on these large scale clusters. Thus, it is very critical for the MPI implementation used to be based on a scalable and high-performance design. We analyze the performance and scalability aspects of MVAPICH, a popular open-source MPI implementation on InfiniBand, from an application standpoint. We analyze the performance and memory requirements of the MPI library while executing several well-known applications and benchmarks, such as NAS, SuperLU, NAMD, and HPL on a 64-node InfiniBand cluster. Our analysis reveals that latest design of MVAPICH requires an order of magnitude less internal MPI memory (average per process) and yet delivers the best possible performance. Further, we observe that for these benchmarks and applications evaluated, the internal memory requirement of MVAPICH remains nearly constant at around 5-10 MB as the number of processes increase, indicating that the MVAPICH design is highly scalable

Study of a traffic splitting scheduling algorithm in multi-solution space for non-synergic nodes

Based on the multi-restrict traffic load balancing model, a multilevel parallelizable scheduling system is given to optimize the traffic engineering state in autonomous system which has multi outgoing links. A quantitative analysis formula of routing space splitting scheduling algorithm is given, and the approach of parallelization computing for IP header recomposing is realized. The actual experiments show that the network throughput increases, the bandwidth utilization ratio is improved and the network has rapid time response property in the whole routing space.

Electromagnetic theory is now a universal tool used in a wide variety of leading-edge applications such as nano-technology and environmental monitoring. Under the Technical Committee on Electromagnetic Theory (EMT), three investigating committees are now running to investigate particular subjects;namely, nanometer-electromagnetic waves and X-ray fields technology, natural electromagnetic phenomena and electromagnetic theory, and computational electromagnetics. Recent trends in these fields are briefly overviewed.

As the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and modeldriven development (MDD) become increasingly common in industry, many developers are faced with the difficult task of understanding how an existing UML model realizes system requirements. Essentially, developers are required to understand the structure and behavior of UML models that they may have not created. Understanding these relationships is non-trivial, because the interactions in the model are not readily apparent. Commonly, the only means to elicit these relationships is visual inspection and guided simulation. This paper describes an alternative approach termed REVU (Requirements Visualization of UML), a process for visualizing functional requirements in terms of behavioral interactions in a UML model. We illustrate the use of this process with the visualization of scenarios for an adaptive light control system.
