Peer tutoring has already been proved to be effective for students' learning. This paper describes how students, with the support of a prototype system called P/sup 3/T, learn from peer tutoring in one-on-one computing environment. Collaborative learning is embedded in the designed models. In addition, two experiments were executed in the courses of graduate school, and after valuing the result, we improved this designed system. This paper discusses the design of P/sup 3/T models and system, and reports on what is found in experiments.

Jitter is a critical problem for the design of both distributed embedded systems and real-time control systems. This work considers meeting the completion jitter constraints of a set of independent, periodic, hard real-time tasks scheduled according to a preemptive fixed-priority scheme. Control over completion jitter is achieved by judiciously applying dynamic voltage scaling (DVS). Through simulation, the proposed method is shown to be an effective tool to meet jitter constraints on a variety of systems.

We present the MatlabTM Simulink model and its corroboration with experimental transmission of amplitude and differential phase modulation incorporating RZ, NRZ, carrier suppressed RZ formats over 320 km long-haul optical fibre transmission systems. This paper describes a collaborative learning supporting system, called PuzzleView. We raise several issues on designing mobile computer support collaborative learning (MCSCL) tool and propose novel examples to describe how those examples encourage students' participation. The design concept of PuzzleView is that the student can real-time view other teammates' annotations and information displayed on their tablet PCs, this function can facilitate the data communication in the group. With this feature, PuzzleView is useful to collaborative learning (CL), because CL emphasizes the importance of group members' communication and negotiation to accomplish the group's mission. We also propose some examples designed on PuzzleView. Through those examples we want to describe that some disadvantage can be avoided in CL activities and encourage students' participation with the appropriate design.

In RFID (radio frequency identification) systems, a tag reader or a tag interrogator communicates with tags, reads their identification codes, and accesses their related database through a network infrastructure. There are many research activities in RFID hardware systems, but there is few in software infrastructure, especially on mobile devices. This paper presents software architecture and implementation of a multi-protocol RFID reader on mobile devices such as mobile phones and PDAs. We have designed and implemented most functionalities of a RFID reader in software except for code modulation and demodulation to support multi-protocols and the next coming standards easily. Also, in order to embed RFID reader's functionalities on WIPI (wireless Internet platform for interoperability) based mobile devices, our firmware interacts with handset adaptation layer (HAL). Any WIPI application can access our RFID reader system and query tags' information from Internet through HAL interfaces. We have prototyped our system on the ARM-based Excalibur FPGA with iPAQ PDA.

The scientific results, present status, and future plan of the ADEOS-II mission, especially for AMSR and GLI sensor, are presented in the paper. Five specific sensors aboard the ADEOS-II satellite were designed for making overall observation of land, atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere from the sun-synchronous polar orbit. The AMSR and GLI are two of the primary sensors aboard the ADEOS-II satellite. The AMSR, a microwave scanner, retrieved the physical parameters related to global water cycle such as total precipitable water, cloud liquid water, precipitations and soil moisture. One the other hand, the GLI, a near ultraviolet to infrared imager, had captured many environmental events such as volcano eruptions, forest fires, and dust events with moderate spatial resolution of 250 m or 1 km. It also observed ocean colors, sea surface temperature, vegetation indices, aerosol and cloud properties, and precipitable water over land area. The ADEOS-II science activities continue in future. The primary objective of the next phase is the data utilization toward the future satellite missions, and the synergy of satellite data and climate models.

This paper describes how to construct a class of spaces-frequency (SF) codes by mapping the super-orthogonal space-time trellis (SOSTT) codes across OFDM subcarriers. Two mapping methods are employed: conventional repetition mapping and the proposed mapping methods with the design criteria of achieving full diversity including spatial and frequency at the maximum possible transmission rate. The proposed mapping method appears to outperform the conventional mapping counterpart with respect to coding gain when constructing the SF codes mapped from SOSTT codes. Simulation results show the performance gain of 0.5-3 dB under frequency-selective fading channels. In addition, the constructed SF codes mapped with both mapping methods are compared to the existing commonly known SF codes, i.e. the space-time trellis (STT) codes mapped with conventional mapping method. Apparently the SOSTT codes are superior to the STT codes in single-carrier narrowband wireless channel, the mapped SOSTT codes do not offer the same advantage over the mapped STT codes under the severely-frequency-selective fading channel when the codes having large number of states. Nevertheless, some performance improvement is observed for codes with small number of states.
