Coherent transport in single wall carbon nanotubes in the presence of spin-orbit coupling is investigated theoretically. Reflectionless contacts are used for probing the electronic transport through infinite SWCNTs for different spin polarizations. It is shown that the spin-orbit interactions give rise to flipping of the electron spin states for sufficiently long CNTs. Spin flip processes are clearly distinguished in the lowest conduction mode, while mode mixing in different conduction modes obscures the spin flipping length for higher energies of the incoming electrons. Spin flipping lengths are also calculated for single mode transmissions with estimated spin-orbit coupling parameters. Several considerations for the accurate measurement of the spin relaxation lengths (LC) and the spin-orbit coupling parameters are discussed. ©2004 IEEE.

This paper introduces a new centralized hybrid scheme for high speed wireless local area networks (WLANs), which combines the Out-of-Band Signaling (OBS), the Enhanced Distributed Coordination Function (EDCF) in IEEE 802.11 and the Deficit Round Robin (DRR) technologies to achieve better system performance for high-speed WLANs. We show via simulation that our overall system performance is higher than that of the EDCF in IEEE 802.11, and a certain quality of service and fairness are achieved. © 2004 IEEE.

The purpose of this study is to propose a new online and nonlinear PCA(OL-NPCA) method for feature extraction from the incremental data. Kernel PCA(KPCA) is widely used for nonlinear feature extraction, however, it has been pointed out that KPCA has the following problems. First, applying KPCA to patterns requires storing and finding the eigenvectors of a kernel matrix, which is infeasible for a large number of data N. Second problem is that in order to update the eigenvectors with an another data, the whole eigenspace should be recomputed. OL-NPCA overcomes these problems by incremental eigenspace update method with a feature mapping function. According to the experimental results, which comes from applying OL-NPCA to a toy and a large data problem, OL-NPCA shows following advantages. First, OLNPCA is more efficient in memory requirement than KPCA. Second advantage is that OL-NPCA is comparable in performance to KPCA. Furthermore, performance of OL-NPCA can be easily improved by relearning the data. For classification extracted features are used as input for least squares support vector machine. In our experiments we show that proposed feature extraction method is comparable in performance to a Kernel PCA and proposed classification system shows a high classification performance on UCI benchmarking data and NIST handwritten data set. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper we describe the design and implementation of ATEMU, a fine grained sensor network simulator. ATEMU is intended to bridge the gap between actual sensor network deployments and sensor network simulations. We adopt a hybrid strategy, where the operation of individual sensor nodes is emulated in an instruction by instruction manner, and their interactions with each other via wireless transmissions are simulated in a realistic manner. A unique feature of ATEMU is its ability to simulate a heterogeneous sensor network. Using ATEMU it is possible to not only accurately simulate the operation of different application on the MICA2 platform but also a complete sensor network where the sensor nodes themselves maybe based on different hardware platforms. In addition we also describe our implementation of XATDB, our front-end debugger/GUI for ATEMU. XATDB provides an excellent educational tool for people to start learning about the operation of sensor nodes and sensor networks, without requiring the purchase of actual sensor node hardware. The accuracy and emulation capabilities provided by ATEMU ensure that when and if actual hardware is used, the software will already have undergone rigorous testing and debugging on an accurate platform. This would provide the sensor network deployment community with a much more accurate estimate of the performance of various algorithms and protocols in realistic scenarios and platforms. © 2004 IEEE.

Recently honeycomb meshes have been considered as alternative candidates for interconnection networks in parallel and distributed computer systems. This paper presents a solution to one of the open problems about honeycomb meshes - the so-called three disjoint path problem. The problem requires minimizing the length of the longest of any three disjoint paths between 3-degree nodes. This solution provides information on the re-routing of traffic along the network in the presence of faults. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

In a previous paper we solved an open problem named as the three disjoint path problem on honeycomb meshes. In this paper we extend the technique used to solve the related problem on honeycomb tori. The result gives the minimum possible length of the longest of any three disjoint paths between two given nodes in a torus. The problem has practical benefits in the fault tolerant aspects of interconnection topologies. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

This paper describes TRAP/J, a software tool that enables new adaptable behavior to be added to existing Java applications transparently (that is, without modifying the application source code and without extending the JVM). The generation process combines behavioral reflection and aspect-oriented programming to achieve this goal. Specifically, TRAP/J enables the developer to select, at compile time, a subset of classes in the existing program that are to be adaptable at run time. TRAP/J then generates specific aspects and reflective classes associated with the selected classes, producing an adapt-ready program. As the program executes, new behavior can be introduced via interfaces to the adaptable classes. A case study is presented in which TRAP/J is used to introduce adaptive behavior to an existing audio-streaming application, enabling it to operate effectively in a lossy wireless network by detecting and responding to changing network conditions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper proposes and implements a policy-based QoS management platform for DiffServ enabled IP networks, which specifies QoS policies to guarantee QoS requirements. The proposed platform integrates the function of policy-based management and QoS monitoring by extending the original IETF policy-based management architecture. High-level QoS policies are represented as valid XML documents and are translated to EJB beans in the EJB-based policy server of the platform. The policy distribution and the QoS monitoring are processed using SNMP. This paper also describes the implementation of Linuxbased DiffServ routers with DiffServ MIB and analyzes the experimental results using a video streaming system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an application layer protocol that controls multimedia sessions of Third Generation Mobile networks. A major concern with SIP in 3G networks is ensuring the efficient use of the bandwidth constraints inherent in the wireless medium. Because of the significant size of SIP messages, 3G terminals can suffer from substantial set-up delays. IETF has proposed a general solution to this problem, named SigComp. This paper investigates the performance of SigComp, in particular how much time saving the scheme is capable of offering. A novel scheme that can replace SIP for increasing time savings and reducing the load of the SigComp layer is proposed. The scheme, referred to as Binary Hybrid SIP (BHSIP), is based on binary sequences and plain text. This paper evaluates the performance of the scheme, and compares it with normal SIP. The paper provides experimental results obtained when comparing the performance of SigComp/SIP versus Sig- Comp/BHSIP by using an emulated network environment, and discusses the benefits of using BHSIP. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Data Warehouses and On-Line Analytical Processing systems rely on a multidimensional model that includes dimensions, hierarchies, and measures. Such model allows to express users' requirements for supporting the decision-making process and to facilitate its afterward implementation. Although Data Warehouses typically include a spatial or location dimension, this dimension is usually represented in an alphanumeric format. However, it is well-known that a visual representation of spatial data allows to reveal patterns that are difficult to discover otherwise. Further, a multidimensional model is seldom used for representing spatial data. In this work we propose an extension of a conceptual multidimensional model with spatial dimensions, spatial hierarchies, and spatial measures. We also consider the inclusion of topological relationships and topological operators in the model. We analyze different scenarios showing the significance and convenience of the proposed extension.
