The scalability of Clos-network switches makes them an alternative to single-stages switches for implementing large-size packet switches. This paper introduces a cell dispatching scheme, called Maximum Weight Matching Dispatching (MWMD) scheme, for buffered Clos-network switches. The MWMD scheme is based on a maximum weight matching algorithm for input-buffered switches. This paper shows that, with request queues in the buffered Clos-network architecture, the MWMD scheme is able to achieve a 100% throughput for independent admissible traffic, without allocating any buffers in the second stage and without expanding the internal bandwidth. As a practical scheme, a maximal oldest-cell-first matching dispatching (MOMD) scheme is also introduced. MOMD shows that using a finite number of iterations in the dispatching scheme, the throughout under unbalanced traffic pattern can be high.

All-to-all broadcast is one of the common collective operations that involve dense communication between all processes in a parallel program. Previously, programmable network interface cards (NICs) have been leveraged to efficiently support collective operations, including barrier, broadcast, and reduce. This work explores the characteristics of all-to-all broadcast and proposes new algorithms to exploit the potential advantages of NIC programmability. Along with these algorithms, salient strategies have been used to provide scalable topology management, global buffer management, efficient communication processing, and message reliability. The algorithms have been incorporated into a NIC-based collective protocol over Myrinet/GM. The NIC-based all-to-all broadcast operations improve all-to-all broadcast bandwidth over 16 nodes by a factor of 3, compared to host-based all-to-all broadcast operation. Furthermore, the NIC-based operations have been demonstrated to achieve better scalability to large systems and very low host CPU utilization.

Server replication is an approach often used to improve service access efficiency and availability for a large number of clients. This paper adopts a simple service model and investigates a set of efficient algorithms for server selection in an anycast group under the condition of imprecise network delay. The algorithms use ticket-based probing approach to search the path with short delay and probe the server load at the same time and try to optimize the server and path delay at the same time. The simulation results demonstrate that our algorithms are efficient in terms of server response time for sever selection compared with several other server selection algorithms.

In this paper, we study the performance of our earlier proposed out-of-band signaling (OBS) scheme for high speed wireless local area networks (WLANs). We employ the system approximation technique for modeling of the OBS scheme. An equivalent state dependent single server queue, that describes the OBS scheme, is constructed for the analysis of the throughput and delay performances. Moreover, we study the throughput optimization of the OBS scheme, which provides a means for optimizing the performance of the OBS scheme, given a particular network environment. Finally, we conduct several simulation experiments to validate our analytical results.

Priority queues are essential function blocks in numerous applications such as discrete event simulations. This paper describes and exemplifies the ease of obtaining high performance priority queues using a two-tier list-based structure. This new implementation, called the Twol structure, is amalgamated with three priority queues, namely, the Henriksen's queue, splay tree and skew heap, to enhance the efficiency of these basal priority queue structures. Using a model that combines traditional average case and amortized complexity analysis, Twol-amalgamated priority queues that maintain N active events are theoretically proven to offer O(1) expected amortized complexity under reasonable assumptions. They are also demonstrated empirically to offer stable near O(1) performance for widely varying priority increment distributions and for queue sizes ranging from 10 to 10 million. Extensive empirical results show that the Twol-amalgamated priority queues consistently outperform those basal structures (i.e., without the Twol structure) with an average speedup of about three to five times on widely different hardware architectures. These results provide testimony that the Twol-amalgamated priority queues are suitable for implementation in sizeable application scenarios such as, but not limited to, large-scale discrete event simulation. © 2005 ACM.

Sperm whales are known to dive to a depth of over two thousand meters and it is also known that they emit loud impulsive broadband sounds called "clicks" during their diving. However, little is known about sperm whales' behavior because of a shortage of methods to observe them during their dives. Our attempt is to use the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) as an observation platform for sperm whales. The tasks of AUV are to recognize sperm whales individually and track them in real time by listening to sperm whale's clicks with 4-hydrophone array and detecting its direction. As the initial stage for these objectives, we set up an experiment for our observation system using a boat instead of AUV and a support boat. In the middle of August 2003, we carried out an experiment to test our observation system off Ogasawara Islands. Two boats, each with a hydrophone array were deployed mainly in the west or southeast of Chichijima Island in an ocean depth of about 1000 meters. During the experiments over five days we encountered at least fourteen sperm whales. The result of this experiment indicates that our observation system is suitable for tracking sperm whales in sub-real time. We also acquired sufficient sound data of sperm whale's vocalization for off-line verification. The analysis of the results is presently underway. This experiment can be considered as the preliminary step to apply this kind of technique to develop innovative observation for underwater ecosystem system using AUVs.

QoS provisioning according to the DifTServ framework has raised the requirements for pricing mechanisms that preserve the potential and flexibility of DiffServ. At the same time, such mechanisms should reflect resource usage, allocate resources efficiently, reimburse costs or maximize service provision profits and lead customers to requesting services that will maximize their revenue. This work proposes a policy for pricing based on resource allocation by a particular category of DiffServ-based services for aggregated traffic in the case of transport networks. Our research takes into account the particularities that apply to the case of DiffServ services' provision over transport networks while imposing minimal overload and a-priori estimation of costs. The detailed pricing methodology is presented and experimentally evaluated.

The availability of high-speed transmission media and networking equipment in contemporary networks, as well as the evolution of quality-demanding applications has focused research interest on the provision of advanced qualitative services in addition to the traditional best-effort model of the Internet. A number of alternatives for service differentiation and QoS provisioning have been proposed and standardized, but in the case of backbone, transport networks the DiffServ architecture has prevailed, due to its scalability and deployment feasibility. The provisioning of services according to the DiffServ framework has in turn raised the requirements for interdependent, controlled resource allocation and service pricing, with particular needs for pricing mechanisms that preserve the potential and flexibility of DiffServ. At the same time, such mechanisms should reflect resource usage, allocate resources efficiently, reimburse costs or maximize service provision profits and lead customers to requesting services that will maximize their revenue. In this work, after reviewing related research, the principles that a pricing scheme for DiffServ-based services should follow are presented, stressing the differences form traditional Internet pricing. Based on these principles, an analytical approach to pricing a particular class of DiffServ-based services and a methodology for applying this approach in a real network are proposed and evaluated. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Progressive image transmission (PIT) transmits the most significant portion of a picture, followed by less important parts. The mechanism can be used in Web-based applications, while users are browsing images. Most PIT methods use the same pixel interpolation scheme for the entire picture, without considering the differences in different portions. We test several strategic decomposition mechanisms. Our contribution results in an adaptive image transmission mechanism, which takes the differences of pictures and picture portions into consideration. We tested 1500 pictures in different categories and parameters. The overall bit rates can be reduced significantly, with good PSNR values. An error recovery procedure is also implemented to guarantee the transmitted pictures that can be fully recovered.
