An efficient novel frequency domain finite element approach for the analysis of photonic crystal resonant cavities is presented. This approach uses isoparametric triangular elements for the discretization and perfectly matched layers to limit the computational domain. Besides, it solves a linear system of equations instead of an eigenvalues problem, in this way, less computational effort is needed. The resonant frequency, the field pattern, modal area and the quality factor of the resonant mode of a finite-sized cavity are rigorously calculated.

As Internet growing exponentially, MPLS technology providing IP services has been developing to support highly demanded quality of services. For such demands, the MPLS networks are required with high reliability in case of network failure. One scheme for high reliability is LSP path protection in MPLS networks. In this paper we propose a mechanism of dynamic path protection, which allow traffic bypass the failure on link and/or node. Since the proposed mechanism chooses an appropriate path from already established paths without setting-up new backup path, fast path protection is performed. The proposed protection mechanism can be applied into MPLS networks with multiple failures for high reliability.

In an oceanographic campaign of seismic prospecting it is often needed equipments with geophones to measure the motion of the sea bed. Normally, the signal is weak compared to the noise because the source is a few kilometres away from the sensor. The noise is due to the ambient in the ocean (seismic activity, currents, etc) and the electronic noise in the equipment (sensor, amplifier stage, A/D converter, hard disc and connexions). In order to characterize the electromagnetic geophone sensor and the performance with amplifier stage we have found models of a geophone sensor and we have simulated them with different amplifiers to improve the ratio S/N.

For effectively browsing and navigation, the semantic annotation is essential for the visual content of movies. It is very important to show the particular object that the movie producer wants to highlight in educational videos or commercials. We propose an interactive and structure-based video annotation system, in which we can describe the video object and make multistory movies. The system provides a manual object-based interface for film producers to select the meaningful object and annotate it. We also provide a video story constructing function to interact with the audience.

With the rapidly development of distance learning and the XML (Extensible Markup Language) technology, metadata becomes an important item in an e-learning system. Today, many distance learning standards such as SCORM, AICC CMI, IEEE LTSC learning object meta-data (LOM), and IMS learning resource metadata XML binding specification, use metadata to tag learning materials, shareable content objects, and learning resources. However, most metadata is used to define learning materials and test problems. Few metadata is dedicated for assessment in learning. We propose an assessment metadata model for e-learning operations. With the support from the assessment metadata, we can collect information at the question cognition level, item difficulty index, item discrimination index, questionnaire style, and question style. The assessment analysis model provides individual questions, summary of test results, and analytical suggestions. The suggestions and results can tell teachers why a question is not suitable and how to correct it. Teachers can see the analysis of test result and fix problematic questions. With the cognition level analysis, teachers can avoid missing items in teaching. The mechanism developed also suggests an e-learning system, with adaptive learning content and individualized tests, as well as good advice for the teachers.

Sperm whales are known to dive to a depth of over two thousand meters and it is also known that they emit loud impulsive broadband sounds called "clicks" during their diving. But little is known about sperm whales' behavior because of a shortage of methods to observe them during their dives. Our attempt is to use autonomous the underwater vehicle (AUV) as an observation platform for sperm whales. The tasks of AUV are to recognize sperm whales individually and track them in real time by listening to sperm whale's clicks with 4-hydrophone array and detecting its direction. As the initial stage for these objectives, we set up an experiment for our observation system using a boat instead of AUV and a support boat. In the middle of August 2003, we carried out an experiment to test our observation system off Ogasawara Islands. Two boats each with a hydrophone array were deployed mainly in the west or southeast of Chichijima Island in ocean depth of about 1000 meters. During the experiments over five days we encountered at least fourteen sperm whales. The result of this experiment indicates our observation system is suitable for tracking of sperm whales in sub-real time. We also acquired sufficient sound data of sperm whale's vocalization for off-line verification. The analysis of the results is presently underway. This experiment can be considered as the preliminary step to apply this kind of technique to develop innovative observation for underwater ecosystem system using AUVs. © 2004 IEEE.

Many researchers used computer technology over the last decade to build a virtual learning community in Web-based learning environment. However, building and managing a sustainable learning community remains challenging. One of the goals of this study is to try to identify some major events that affect learning community growth, and another goal is employ these events to develop a regression model for forecasting accumulated effective users in learning communities in the future. This study uses a Web-based learning system, as a preliminary analysis environment. Four major events that influence learning communities were identified, and these events were used to establish a regression model for calculating accumulated effective users. Future works will attempt to prove that the forecast regression model affects community building.

Summary form only given. Introduction of an integrated energy service system in an urban area is assumed. An energy supply plant is installed in the area to provide integrated energy service. It supplies electricity, gas, cooling, and heating to consumers. To consider CO/sub 2/ emission constraint in the area, analyses of energy pricing, economic impact on energy consumers, and operation of the system under the constraint of CO/sub 2/ emission were performed. CO/sub 2/ emission and economic impact on the consumers and the supplier of various energy pricing scenarios were calculated using linear programming models. The solution that satisfied the CO/sub 2/ emission restriction, and was economically optimal to the consumers was chosen from the results. The chosen solutions are Pareto optimum solutions of a multi-objective problem that concerns both CO/sub 2/ emission and cost to the consumers.

In high-speed digital systems, most of the EMI from the system is caused by high-speed digital clock drivers and synchronized circuits. In order to reduce the EMI from the system clocks, spread spectrum clock (SSC) techniques that modulate the system clock frequency have been proposed. A conventional spread spectrum clock generator with a phase locked loop (SSCG-PLL) has been implemented by controlling period jitter. However, the conventional SSCG-PLL becomes more difficult to implement at higher clock frequencies, in the GHz range, because of the random period jitter of the PLL. Furthermore, the attenuation of EMI is decreased due to the random period jitter of the PLL. To overcome these problems associated with the random period jitter, we propose a spread spectrum clock generator with a delay cell array (SSCG-DCA), which controls the position of clock transitions. Measurement and simulation have demonstrated that the proposed SSCG-DCA is easier to implement and attenuating the EMI is more effective compared with the conventional SSCG-PLL. The proposed SSCG-DCA was implemented on a chip using a 0.35 /spl mu/m CMOS process and a 9 dB attenuation of the EMI was achieved at 390 MHz.
