We propose a new protocol for efficiently managing large ad hoc networks, i.e., networks in which all nodes can be mobile. We observe that, since nodes in such networks are not necessarily equal in that they may have different resources, not all of them should be involved in basic network operations such as packet forwarding, flooding, etc. In the proposed protocol, a small subset of the network nodes is selected based on their status and they are organized to form a backbone (whence the name "backbone protocol" or simply B-protocol to our proposed solution). The B-protocol operates in two phases: first the "most suitable" nodes are selected to serve as backbone nodes, then the selected nodes are linked to form a backbone which is guaranteed to be connected if the original network is. The effectiveness of the B-protocol in constructing and maintaining in face of node mobility and node/link failure a connected backbone that uses only a small fraction of the nodes and of the links of the original networks is demonstrated via simulation. The obtained results show that both the selected backbone nodes and the links between them in the backbone are considerably smaller than the nodes and the links in the flat network.

We present our implementation of TeleMIP, a two-level architecture for IP-based mobility management. TeleMIP essentially uses an intra-domain mobility management protocol (IDMP) for managing mobility within a domain, and mobile IP for supporting inter-domain (global) mobility. Unlike other proposed schemes for intra-domain mobility management, IDMP uses two care-of addresses for mobility management. The global care-of address is relatively stable and identifies the mobile node's current domain, while the local care-of address changes every time the mobile changes subnets and identifies the mobile's current point of attachment. The paper describes our TeleMIP implementation based on enhancements to the Stanford University mobile IP Linux code and presents performance results obtained through experiments on our test-bed. Finally, we use analysis to accurately quantify the savings in signaling overhead obtained when TeleMIP is used in environments where mobiles change subnets relatively rapidly.

A Web-based tool is described, called the Supplementary Reading Provider (SRP), devised to find related readings according to the learners' lexical level which offer repeated exposure to the target vocabulary. The SRP exploits text retrieval techniques based upon the hypothesis that there is a parallel between text similarity measurement on the one hand and the pedagogical task of providing supplementary readings which offer repeated exposure to new vocabulary on the other. Two criteria are compared for finding supplementary passages from a corpus of reading: one matches keywords of the original passage and those of the corpus passages, the other matches target vocabulary words without regard to keywords. The integration of SRP into a Web-based language learning platform called IWiLL is described as well.

The authors describe the design and implementation of a tool called the Lexical Difficulty Filter (LDF) intended to help learners or teachers in selecting sentences appropriate to the level of students for English vocabulary learning. The LDF serves as a bridge between learner and information resource bank. It selects suitable sentences from the output of standard English corpus concordancers. The core technology in the design of LDF is a fuzzy expert system. The results obtained are very encouraging in this pioneering work. We achieve 94.33% accuracy rate in imitating the judgments of a human expert in determining the degree of difficulty of a sentence for a given learner level.

This paper presents a new routing strategy, termed incremental virtual circuit connection (IVCC), that is ideally suited for a class of call requests that promise to underlie future high-speed networks. IVCC aims to reduce the idling of reserved resources, thereby improving the sharing of network resources among users and increasing call success rate. Under IVCC, the subsequent subpaths, starting at the source node, are computed, reserved, and utilized incrementally. Initially, the source node (SN) computes the entire path all the way to the destination node (DN), but propagates the call admission control (CAC) to reserve network resources only for a subset of the entire path, where the choice of the subpath is based on the organization and topology of the network. This paper hypothesizes that the efficient use of resources in IVCC will significantly reduce the probability of failures. Thus, IVCC's uniqueness consists of two key elements. First, the actual route for a source traffic is successively and dynamically refined, utilizing up-to-date information on the state of the network, but always keeping an "eye" towards the destination. Second, traffic cells are launched from the source node or any of the intermediate nodes only after the network resources along the subsequent subpath have been reserved. IVCC has been modeled for two representative ATM networks, a 15-node network spread over the continental US and a 50-node network extending throughout the world, and extensively simulated for a large number of realistic input traffic stimuli utilizing an asynchronous distributed simulation algorithm running on a network of workstations. For a comparative analysis, ATM Forum's P-NNI is also modeled and simulated for identical networks and under identical traffic conditions.

There exist some studies in proportional scheduling algorithms for differentiated service networks which schedule the packets between different classes proportionally based on certain metrics, such as bandwidth, loss and delay. In this paper, the behaviors of RJPS (Relative Jitter Packet Scheduler) and another proportional delay scheduler (WTP), as well as its influence on the playout buffer, which uses the Concord delay adjustment algorithm, are examined. Our simulations show that RJPS is more convergent and produces a smaller delay than WTP via the same network with the same loss rate. Finally, we propose a network using both RJPS and WTP for minimizing the network delay of each class. © 2001 IEEE.

We present an optimum multiuser receiver for detecting K cochannel asynchronous partial-response pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) signals. The receiver generalizes the optimum multiuser detector developed by Verdu (1983, 1986) for asynchronous full-response PAM signals and the optimum single-user receiver developed by Ungerboeck (1974) for the detection of ISI-corrupted PAM signals.

This paper describes a prototype test bench used at the Intel Corporation's Oregon Design Center to functionally test ASICs. The test bench uses an evolutionary algorithm, but a direct approach is not used-i.e., the evolutionary algorithm does not explicity evolve the test patterns. Instead, an indirect approach is used where the evolutionary algorithm evolves a set of control parameters, and it is these parameters that the test bench uses to create the test pattern set. Preliminary test results from a moderate size ASIC are presented to show the effectiveness of our method.
