Point process models for self-similar network traffic, with applications

Self-similar processes based on fractal point processes (FPPs) provide natural and attractive network traffic models. We show that the point process formulation yields a wide range of FPPs which in turn yield a diversity of parsimonious, computationally efficient, and highly practical asymptotic second-order self-similar processes. Using this framework, we show that the relevant second-order fractal characteristics such as long-range dependence (LRD), slowly-decaying variance, and 1/f noise are completely characterized by three fundamental quantities: mean arrival rate, Hurst parameter, and fractal onset time. Four models are proposed, and the relationship between their model parameters and the three fundamental quantities are analyzed. By successfully applying the proposed models to Bellcore's Ethernet traces, we show that the FPP models prove useful in evaluating and predicting the queueing performance of various types of fractal traffic sources. Multimedia annotation is of benefit to many multimedia applications in the enhancement of presentation, instruction, and communication. In the present paper, we make use of voice and electronic pen as annotation media in the designing of a multimedia annotation and playback system. Our contributions are as follows: 1) a time-based synchronization mechanism is developed which takes care of not only voice and electronic pen movement temporal synchronization issue but also electronic pen movement spatial synchronization problem; and 2) file storage and replay mechanisms are devised to handle multimedia storage process and to facilitate interactive presentation process during replay phase. We implemented the proposed system on the Microsoft Windows 95 platforms in the Multimedia Information networking Laboratory (MINE) at the Tamkang University.

We propose a system architecture of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW). In our approach, the overall system is divided into two subsystems, namely, the session management subsystem and the session processing subsystem. The session management subsystem is in charge of session establishment and complement, session processing monitoring, as well as file storage and retrieval. The session processing subsystem mainly deals with the participants' coordination, cooperation, and communication issues. We implemented a prototype in the Multimedia Information networking (MINE) Laboratory at Tamkang University.

An electronic document automation system serves the purpose of processing documents over networks in a paperless manner. Obviously, such a system is significantly beneficial to our working efficiency. We design and implement a multimedia document automation system. We make use of HyperText Markup Language (HTML) to construct the multimedia document formats. We also design a Web based document management system and a workflow control scheme to facilitate query and management processes. We implemented the proposed system on the Windows NT platform in the Multimedia Information networking (MINE) Laboratory at Tamkang University.

The routing techniques used in conventional packet radio networks are not suitable for dynamic multihop wireless networks because of their unique architecture. In this paper a new hierarchical multihop routing algorithm is introduced which balances the cost of location-update and path-finding operations by partitioning the terminals and mobile base stations to produce a virtual topology. Based on the virtual topology each network entity stores a fraction of the network topology information and maintains the routing efficiency. Finally, the performance of the hierarchical multihop routing algorithm is investigated through simulations.

In packet-switched networks, queueing of packets at the switches can result when multiple connections share the same physical link. To accommodate a large number of connections, a switch can employ link-scheduling algorithms to prioritize the transmission of the queued packets. Due to the high-speed links and small packet sizes, a hardware solution is needed for the priority queue in order to make the link schedulers effective. But for good performance, the switch should also support a large number of priority levels (P) and be able to buffer a large number of packets (N). So a hardware priority queue design must be both fast and scalable (with respect to N and P) in order to be implemented effectively. In this paper we first compare four existing hardware priority queue architectures, and identify scalability limitations on implementing these existing architectures for large N and P. Based on our findings, we propose two new priority queue architectures, and evaluate them using simulation results from Verilog HDL and Epoch implementations.

The article addresses the issues that arise in delivering video across Wireless Andrew. Wireless Andrew is the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) heterogeneous networking environment. It interconnects wideband and narrowband wireless and wired networks using off-the-shelf technologies. The authors design a video system where video servers distributed across the network deliver, upon request, video clips to clients scattered around the campus. The main novelty of the article is generative video (GV), a content-based meta representation for video that is well suited for the heterogeneous dynamic environment of Wireless Andrew. GV provides a framework for graceful degradation as end-to-end network throughput varies. GV reduces the video sequence to a small set of still images and side information needed to reconstruct the original sequence. The authors have demonstrated for three real live video sequences that GV delivers compression ratios in the range of 1000-10000 with good perceptual quality They develop a scalable implementation for the GV coder/decoder (codec). Scalability coding avoids duplicating the encoding of each video clip when servicing a wide range of throughputs, as in heterogeneous networks. They discuss the video delivery requirements, the video system architecture, the system implementation, and the trade-offs needed to ensure graceful degradation under real-life network operating conditions.

The Available-Bit-Rate (ABR) service that is being standardized by the ATM Forum dynamically determines the maximum transmission rate, so-called explicit rate, of a connection. A drawback of the ABR control scheme for calculating the explicit rates is that it tries to allocate the same bandwidth to all ABR connections regardless of the application type of the connection. In this study a multi-level explicit rate scheme is proposed that can allocate different explicit rates for different classes of connections. ABR traffic is controlled at three levels. At the topmost level, bandwidth is dynamically regulated between CBR, VER, and ABR traffic sources. At the next level, bandwidth is controlled between different classes of ABR traffic. At the lowest level bandwidth is distributed among connections belonging to the same ABR traffic class. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated in simulation experiments.

We present a comparative analysis of bandwidth access control schemes under nonstationary traffic conditions for heterogeneous circuit-mode traffic offered to a B-ISDN network link. A unified model for analysing the behavior of several bandwidth access control schemes is developed using a Markov process model with acceptance functions. Numerical techniques are used to solve the associated Chapman-Kolmogorov equations and determine the nonstationary behavior. Performance results are given for several common bandwidth access control schemes, namely: complete sharing, complete partitioning, partial sharing, classical trunk reservation, and the probabilistic reservation policy. It is shown that the use of the average arrival rate to estimate the average connection blocking rate may be an underestimate for a system with a time varying arrival process. Also, it is found that a nonstationarity in one traffic class arrival process can impact other stationary traffic classes and the degree of variability depends on the particular access control scheme.

This paper examines the process of image denoising to improve the efficiency of the reduced-search fractal block coding (FBC) of greyscale images by reducing the first-order entropy of the image. The reduced-search FBC is a lossy compression technique that exploits the block-wise self-affinity of an image where portions of the image are represented by scaled and isometrically transformed copies of other portions of the image. The efficiency of this process increases with increased redundancy which is the result of lowering the entropy. Image denoising is concerned with separating noise from an image and then suppressing the noise as much as possible without altering the image itself. In this paper spatial smoothing and wavelet denoising are compared. It is shown that denoising increases the efficiency of reduced-search FBC. Spatial smoothing, however, causes a loss of signal that wavelet denoising does not. In either case, the reconstruction qualities of the peak-signal-to-noise ratio at approximately 34 dB and compression ratios of 18.9:1 and higher have been achieved. This is an improvement over the 31 dB and 18.1:1 for non-denoised images.
