Exceptional point (EP)-based optical sensors exhibit exceptional sensitivity but poor detectivity. Slightly off EP operation boosts detectivity without much loss in sensitivity. This paper evaluates the QoE of video and audio transmission over a full-duplex wireless LAN with interference traffic through a computer simulation and a subjective experiment. We employ a simulation environment with a pair of audiovisual transmission and reception terminals and a pair of interference traffic transmission and reception ones. We investigate the effect of the transmission rate of interference traffic and communication distance in a wireless channel on the output quality of the video and audio stream at the reception terminal. We perform a subjective experiment with the output timing of video and audio obtained by the simulation.

EEG and fMRI are complementary, noninvasive technologies for investigating human brain function. These modalities have been used to uncover large-scale functional networks and their disruptions in clinical populations. Given the high temporal resolution of EEG and high spatial resolution of fMRI, integrating these modalities can provide a more holistic understanding of brain activity. This work explores a multimodal source decomposition technique for extracting shared modes of temporal variation between fMRI BOLD signals and EEG spectral power fluctuations in the resting state. The resulting components are then compared between patients with focal epilepsy and controls, revealing multimodal network differences between groups.

This paper investigates the effect of bitrate control methods on QoE of multi-view video and audio streaming with MPEG-DASH. We adopt three bitrate control methods for conventional single-view video streaming to the MVV-A system with MPEG-DASH. We conduct a subjective experiment changing available network bandwidth and investigate the effect of the methods on QoE.

A vast number of spatiotemporal datasets collected from a wide range of sources has motivated scientists to develop effective approaches to identify interesting patterns hidden in these datasets. In this respect, kernel density estimators, which belong to a class of non-parametric estimators in statistics, have been widely exploited in recent years. With this background, we have developed a novel kernel density estimator aiming to provide accurate analysis results. According to the evaluation with a real spatiotemporal dataset, which collected emergency medical service records in a county in the United States, the proposed kernel density estimator can approximate the probability density function significantly more accurately than a conventional kernel density estimator. Furthermore, we have exploited the proposed kernel density estimator to identify interesting patterns hidden in the real spatiotemporal dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

Opinion has always affected businesses and individuals especially from the Public. People react through social media and spread it incompletely. The situation was then accepted as public opinion. There are three categories of opinion i.e., positive, negative, and neutral. To investigate public opinion on a particular issue of interest, sentiment analysis might be employed. By offering a solution to the text classification challenge, this experiment focuses on the perception of airline tweets among the American public. We offer a method to classify tweets as positive, negative, or neutral using three machine learning classifiers: Random Forest Classifier, Naive Bayes Classifier, and K-Nearest Neighbors Classifier. We examined the performance of three machine learning classifiers in terms of accuracy, average precision, average recall, and average f-1 score. The results demonstrate that the Random Forest Classifier, which produces 82% accuracy, 80% average precision, 82% average recall, and 80% average f1-score, performs the best among the machine learning classifiers. © 2023 IEEE.

Image captioning aims to generate a description of visual contents with natural language automatically. This is useful in several potential applications, such as image understanding and virtual assistants. With recent advances in deep neural networks, natural and semantic text generation has been improved in image captioning. However, maintaining the gradient flow between neurons in consecutive layers becomes challenging as the network gets deeper. In this paper, we propose to integrate an auxiliary classifier in the residual recurrent neural network, which enables the gradient flow to reach the bottom layers for enhanced caption generation. Experiments on the MSCOCO and VizWiz datasets demonstrate the advantage of our proposed approach over the state-of-the-art approaches in several performance metrics. © 2022 European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO. Kidney stones are primarily crystals formed from ion oversaturation in urine. Currently, the diagnosis of kidney stones involves experienced professionals manually interpreting images of urinary crystals under a microscope. In recent years, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), many researchers have proposed various methods to assist in diagnosis, hoping to improve medical quality. This study explored the application of AI in the medical field, aiming to automate the interpretation of urinary crystal images, such as red blood corpuscles (RBCs), calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM), calcium oxalate dihydrate octahedron (COD-OCT), calcium oxalate dihydrate dodecahedron (COD-DOD), debris, and others, and to use image processing techniques to classify urinary crystal types. This research is expected to assist medical personnel in quickly determining the categories of urinary crystals. Ultimately, our model achieved an F1-score of 0.93, indicating that this architecture has significant potential. © 2024 Copyright ACM.

Describing the semantic content of an image via natural language, known as image captioning, has recently attracted substantial interest in computer vision and language processing communities. Current image captioning approaches are mainly based on an encoder-decoder framework in which visual information is extracted by an image encoder and captions are generated by a text decoder, using convolution neural networks (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN), respectively. Although this framework is promising for image captioning, it has limitations in utilizing the encoded visual information for generating grammatically and semantically correct captions in the RNN decoder. More specifically, the RNN decoder is ineffective in using the contextual information from the encoded data due to its limited ability in capturing long-term complex dependencies. Inspired by the advantage of gated recurrent unit (GRU), in this paper, we propose an extension of conventional RNN by introducing a multi-layer GRU that modulates the most relevant information inside the unit to enhance the semantic coherence of captions. Experimental results on the MSCOCO dataset show the superiority of our proposed approach over the state-of-the-art approaches in several performance metrics. © 2022 European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO.
