Background: In this Innovative Practice Work in Progress, we present our initial efforts to integrate formal methods, with a focus on model-checking specifications written in Temporal Logic of Actions (TLA+), into computer science education, targeting undergraduate juniors/seniors and graduate students. Many safety-critical systems and services crucially depend on correct and reliable behavior. Formal methods can play a key role in ensuring correct and safe system behavior, yet remain underutilized in educational and industry contexts. Aims: We aim to (1) qualitatively assess the state of formal methods in computer science programs, (2) construct level-appropriate examples that could be included midway into one’s undergraduate studies, (3) demonstrate how to address successive "failures" through progressively stringent safety and liveness requirements, and (4) establish an ongoing framework for assessing interest and relevance among students. Methods: We detail our pedagogical strategy for embedding TLA+ into an intermediate course on formal methods at our institution. After starting with a refresher on mathematical logic, students specify the rules of simple puzzles in TLA+ and use its included model checker (known as TLC) to find a solution. We gradually escalate to more complex, dynamic, event-driven systems, such as the control logic of a microwave oven, where students will study safety and liveness requirements. We subsequently discuss explicit concurrency, along with thread safety and deadlock avoidance, by modeling bounded counters and buffers. Results: Our initial findings suggest that through careful curricular design and choice of examples and tools, it is possible to inspire and cultivate a new generation of software engineers proficient in formal methods. Conclusions: Our initial efforts suggest that 84% of our students had a positive experience in our formal methods course. This paper presents a novel approach of using unmanned vehicles for Automated Meter Reading (AMR) applications in rural areas where there are a few consumers scattered around a wide area. The proposed system does not require a fixed network infrastructure to transfer data to a central database, since data collection is carried out by unmanned vehicles. Compared to traditional meter reading systems, the use of unmanned vehicles for AMR brings several advantages, such as low cost operation, flexibility, and online system management. However, the realization of these potential gains directly depends on reliable communication capabilities of the deployed system and successful navigation of unmanned vehicles. Overall, in this paper, the design principles and challenges of using unmanned vehicles for AMR applications in rural areas have been presented. Also, the communication architecture of the proposed system has been explained and comparative simulation studies have been performed in terms of energy efficiency and navigation accuracy.

This paper describes the process of identifying the state of a computer system based on tracking changes in the file system under the condition that there is no reliable information about the state of objects in the external environment and the state of the system itself. In this case, the performance indicators of a computer system are random variables with unknown distribution laws. A method for identifying the state of the computer system based on tracking changes in the file system using classical discriminative analysis, taking into account the uncertainty of the input data, is proposed. For this purpose, a special method was developed for solving a fuzzy system of linear algebraic equations. The software was developed for tracking changes in the computer file system: creating, modifying, renaming, and deleting files and directories. The program also performs state classification based on a fuzzy discriminant classifier.

This paper aims to develop a sensor based monitoring and analyzing system for Neuro-Degenerative Disorder patients (NDD); this may consist on SpO2 sensor, Electrophysiological sensors, NIBP, Motion Capture sensors and Eye Monitoring sensor, taking into consideration an acceptable cost for the whole system. Recorded data will be sent to an embedded decision making unit where detection, analysis, classification, prediction and action control will occur. The sensors and the decision making unit will be implemented in a comfortable jacket that doesn't affect the patients' movements and that can be used by several patients with reduced sensor placement alterations. The decision that can be made is creating a stimulus to avoid falling in case of sudden stop while moving, initiating an alarm, sending a notification to a mobile phone application, and/or telemedicine monitoring features. Artificial Neural Networks will be used to classify and predict the abnormal cases where action should be taken, and since the sensors will be continuously recording, it is possible to achieve continuous learning for the ANN as a first phase. Initial models will be defined by testing normal behaviors and some known abnormal behaviors or symptoms related to the electrical activity and other characteristics of the heart, oxygen saturation level, eye activity and body motion.

Due to the networking expertise, services and technical support of telecommunications operators, Smart Grid (SG) operators prefer telecommunications operators for their communications needs instead of creating private networks. In this paper, the use of Next Generation Networks (NGNs) by telecommunications operators to provide services to transnational SG operators for SG applications is evaluated. NGNs are all IP networks which are packet based and use IP to transport the various types of traffic such as data, voice, video, and signalling over converged fixed and mobile networks. The main idea of transnational SG operators is simple. By creating a huge single infrastructure for energy, more than one countries and nations can be powered at once. For this, it is not needed to install very huge power plants. Simply creating a complex network of power grid connections to each participating country is enough. The results of a set of simulation studies are given to show the efficiency of the NGN-based communication infrastructure for SG applications in terms of important network performance metrics. The results show that NGN-based communication infrastructures can carry packets based on their priority levels and bandwidth allocations in order to meet the specific requirements of SG applications.

The research results of the Love wave propagation in the semi-space contact area and in a thin layer are presented. The dependences, which allow analyzing the effect of various conditions on the Love wave dispersion, as well as the dependence of the phase velocity on various parameters: the thickness of the layer, which is coated in semi-space;the relationship between the material characteristics of the media (densities, elastic moduli) are defined. The influence of film thickness on the value of phase velocity at a given frequency, but at different ratios between the density of the media are studied. © 2022 IEEE.

Budget analysis for water reservoirs using an autonomous sensor-equipped mini boat

Water is an inescapable necessity for all forms of life on Earth. Therefore, both man-made reservoirs and natural reservoirs play critical roles for several purposes. Evaporation is an important factor that should be taken into account in the case of surface water reservoirs in hot and dry environments, since it can cause significant water loss. In order to estimate the water budgets of reservoirs, the hydrologists are typically using specifically developed computer models which take into account the effects of evaporation. An important step in this repetitive process is to provide an as accurate as possible calculation of the current water budget of reservoir under study. A novel system for the required water budget calculation is proposed in this paper, providing an automated, fast and accurate solution, requiring no human effort as it is based on an autonomous sensor-equipped mini-boat. First, the autonomous mini boat follows predefined trajectories at a reservoir and builds a bathymetric map (depth map) of it. Then, an onboard computer calculates the water budget of the reservoir. The proposed system is portable;as a result, a single system can periodically serve at several water reservoirs. Following the description of the main components of the proposed system, that is the autonomous navigation system and water budget calculation application, the performance of the navigation subsystem and the system as a whole is evaluated based on simulation studies. This study concerns with singularly perturbed systems of second-order reaction-diffusion equations in ODE's. To handle this type of problems, a numerical-asymptotic hybrid method is employed. In this hybrid method, an efficient asymptotic method, the so-called Successive complementary expansion method (SCEM) is applied first and then, a numerical method based on finite differences is proposed to approximate the solution of the corresponding singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion systems. Partial Differential Equations (PDE) are the heart of most simulations in many scientific fields, from Fluid Mechanics to Astrophysics. One the most popular mathematical schemes to solve a PDE is Finite Difference (FD). In this work we map a PDE-FD algorithm called Reverse Time Migration to a GPU using CUDA. This seismic imaging (Geophysics) algorithm is widely used in the oil industry. GPUs are natural contenders in the aftermath of the clock race, in particular for High-performance Computing (HPC). Due to GPU characteristics, the parallelism paradigm shifts from the classical threads plus SIMD to Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD). The NVIDIA GTX 280 implementation outperforms homogeneous CPUs up to 9x (Intel Harpertown E5420) and up to 14x (IBM PPC 970). These preliminary results confirm that GPUs are a real option for HPC, from performance to programmability.

The use of induction motors is widespread in industry. Many researchers have studied the condition monitoring and detecting the faults of induction motors at an early stage. Early detection of motor faults results in fast unscheduled maintenance. In this study, a new artificial immune based support vector machine algorithm is proposed for fault diagnosis of induction motors. Support vector machines (SVMs) have become one of the most popular classification methods in soft computing, recently. However, classification accuracy depends on kernel and penalty parameters. Artificial immune system has abilities of learning, memory and self adaptive control. The kernel and penalizes parameters of support vector machine are tuned using artificial immune system. The training data of support vector machine are extracted from three phase motor current. The new feature vector is constructed based on park's vector approach. The phase space of this feature vector is constructed using nonlinear time series analysis. Broken rotor bar and stator short circuit faults are classified in combined phase space using support vector machines. The experimental data are taken from a three phase induction motor. One, two and three broken rotor bar faults and 10% short circuit of stator faults are detected successfully.
