The growing use of digital media or social media has given a platform to the people to deliver their ideas and viewpoints openly. It is facilitating the rapid spread of contrasting opinions openly. Ultimately, this has developed echo chambers or polarized platforms. These platforms either encourage conspiracy theories or critical narratives. So, nowadays, it has become crucial for people to be aware of being part of such narratives. Moreover, it is also necessary for the organisations to identify the conspiracy creators or the ones who do not possess a conspiracy mentality. This can be made possible by the use of natural language processing techniques to do this task automatically. This study presents the solutions to the two most pressing challenges in today's era. The subtask one of this study provides a solution for the identification of conspiracy narratives and critical narratives using the BERT model. Our model achieved an MCC score of 0.80. Secondly, the other subtask helps to recognize the span of the topic relevant to the important constituents of both categories of oppositional narratives, i.e., agent, facilitator, victim, campaigner, objective, negative effect. The overall accuracy of the model is 95%. These models can be used for the development of an algorithm that can automatically classify the conspiracy theories and critical narratives. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

PDC-ViT: source camera identification using pixel difference convolution and vision transformer

Source camera identification has emerged as a vital solution to unlock incidents involving critical cases like terrorism, violence, and other criminal activities. The ability to trace the origin of an image/video can aid law enforcement agencies in gathering evidence and constructing the timeline of events. Moreover, identifying the owner of a certain device narrows down the area of search in a criminal investigation where smartphone devices are involved. This paper proposes a new pixel-based method for source camera identification, integrating Pixel Difference Convolution (PDC) with a Vision Transformer network (ViT), and named PDC-ViT. While the PDC acts as the backbone for feature extraction by exploiting Angular PDC (APDC) and Radial PDC (RPDC). These techniques enhance the capability to capture subtle variations in pixel information, which are crucial for distinguishing between different source cameras. The second part of the methodology focuses on classification, which is based on a Vision Transformer network. Unlike traditional methods that utilize image patches directly for training the classification network, the proposed approach uniquely inputs PDC features into the Vision Transformer network. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the PDC-ViT approach, it has been assessed on five different datasets, which include various image contents and video scenes. The method has also been compared with state-of-the-art source camera identification methods. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed system in terms of accuracy and robustness when compared to its competitors. For example, our proposed PDC-ViT has achieved an accuracy of 94.30%, 84%, 94.22% and 92.29% using the Vision dataset, Daxing dataset, Socrates dataset and QUFVD dataset, respectively. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading, Smart Grids (SG), and electric vehicle energy management are integral components of the Internet of Energy (IoE) field. The integration of software-Defined Networks (SDNs) and Blockchain (BC) technologies into the IoE domain offers potential benefits that have only been studied in the literature in a few works. In this paper, we investigate the state-of-art solutions that leverage both SDNs and blockchain within the realm of the IoE. We categorize these solutions based on the method of integrating SDN and BC into two categories. The first category is the blockchain for SDN, where blockchain enhances the SDN directly. The second category is blockchain and SDN, where both technologies are used to enhance the proposed solutions. We identify three distinct blockchain applications based on their usage: decentralizing the SDN control plane, serving as a decentralized platform, and improving security measures. Similarly, we observe that SDN serves as a performance enhancer, a substitute for traditional networking, and solely as a control and management framework. It is posited that integrating SDNs and blockchain into IoE leads to performance enhancements, improves security, enables decentralized operations, and eliminates single points of failure in the SDN control plane. Additionally, some unaddressed issues, such as energy efficiency, smart contract management, and scalability, are discussed as potential future directions. © 2024 IEEE.

December 2019 witnessed the outbreak of a novel coronavirus, thought to have started in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The situation worsened owing to its quick spread across the globe, leading to a worldwide pandemic that became known as COVID-19. To suppress the pandemic, early detection of positive COVID-19 patients has become highly important. There is a lack of precise automated tool kits available for use in diagnosing medical conditions, so auxiliary diagnostic tools are in high demand. Important information about this virus can be extracted from X-ray images, which can be used in conjunction with advanced artificial intelligence. This study addresses the unavailability of physicians in remote areas, and the complex algorithm proposed in this study can find potential matches for patients in rural areas who need care. This could help to improve access to care for those who need it most. The purpose of this study is to develop a novel model that can automatically detect COVID-19 by utilizing chest X-ray images. The proposed model incorporates binary and multi-class classification and can be employed by radiologists for timely detection of the COVID-19 virus in an effective manner. © 2023 The Institute of Electronics and Information Engineers.

Inpainting is the process of removing an unwanted object or region in an image without degrading the image quality. Inpainting offers a solution to problems such as repairing damaged images or removing unwanted parts of the image. In this study, we focus on the detection of brand logos in vehicle images and the removal of these regions using inpainting. The study consists of two main phases: First, the Haar-like features method is used to detect vehicle logos. Then, the detected logos are removed from the image by applying inpainting with the Fast Marching Method. As a result of the experimental studies, it was found that the methods successfully detected and removed the logos with an accuracy of 98%, and the PSNR value ranged between 25.36 dB and 25.41 dB, and the SSIM value ranged between 0.96692 and 0.96994 while maintaining the image quality. These results show that the proposed method exhibits high performance in removing vehicle logos efficiently. © 2024 IEEE.

Federated Learning (FL) offers significant advancements in user/data privacy, learning quality, model efficiency, scalability, and network communication latency. However, it faces notable security challenges, particularly with the emergence of backdoor attacks. The distributed nature of FL complicates the development of backdoor-resistant systems compared to traditional machine learning environments. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to turn the perceived curse of model inversion (MI) attacks into a blessing, using them as a tool for detecting backdoor attacks in FL environments. Leveraging MI outputs, we propose a K-means-based feature extraction and Isolation-Forest-based anomaly detection algorithm to analyze behavior and detect abnormal learning performance, thereby identifying backdoor attacks. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superior performance of our method in detecting backdoor attacks within FL systems. © 2024 IEEE.

An Empirical Study on Small-Sized Datasets Based on Eubank’s Optimal Spacing Theorem

Conventional machine learning methods for software effort estimation (SEE) have seen an increase in research interest. Conversely, there are few research that try to evaluate how well deep learning techniques work in SEE. This can be attributed to the relatively small sizes of SEE datasets. The goal of the study is to establish a threshold for small-sized datasets in SEE. Additionally, it looks into how well certain deep learning and traditional machine learning models perform on small-sized datasets. From the body of existing literature, plausible SEE datasets are extracted and ranked along with their attributes and number of project cases. The ranking of the project instances is discretized into three classes (small, medium, and large) using Eubank’s optimal spacing theory. Using the leave-one-out cross-validation, each small-sized dataset is used to train two deep learning models and five conventional machine learning models. Each model’s ability to make predictions is evaluated using its mean absolute error. Results show that, on small-scale datasets, deep learning models outperform traditional machine learning models in terms of prediction accuracy, which contradicts what is previously known. Recommender systems aim to filter information effectively and recommend useful sources to match users' requirements. However, the exponential growth of information in recent social networks may cause low prediction accuracy for recommendation systems. This article proposes a unified personalized recommendation architecture referred to as PSRec, which incorporates user preference and social relationship into matrix factorization framework. Specifically, PSRec generates two collections for textual reviews and contextual information respectively, and performs preference learning for each user via the Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic model. Moreover, PSRec exploits the inner relations within the social circle for recommendation, including direct trust relationship and indirect trust relationship. Additionally, it's certificated that PSRec can converge at a sub-linear rate via theoretical analysis. Experimental results over DoubanMovie, CiaoDVDs and Yelp demonstrate the superiority of the proposed PSRec, which can achieve significant improvements and provide much better user experience while compared with other benchmark models. © 2024 - IOS Press. In the domain of formal verification, translating natural language (NL) requirements into Computation Tree Logic (CTL) specifications presents a notable challenge due to the disparity between human-readable documents and formal specifications. This paper introduces a novel approach that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to automate this translation process, thereby enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of formal verification practices. We fine-tune three state-of-the-art LLMs - LLAMA3, Mistral, and Qwen2 - with a particular focus on optimizing the Mistral model due to its superior performance. Our methodology is supported by the Natural2CTL dataset, consisting of 2,095 NL requirements and their corresponding CTL specifications. We employ evaluation metrics such as validation loss, accuracy, semantic similarity, and Structural Operator Jaccard Similarity (SOJS) for a comprehensive assessment of model performance. Additionally, a comparative analysis with human translators, trained in CTL logic, underscores the LLMs' potential to match or even surpass human accuracy in translating NL requirements into formal specifications. Our findings reveal that the fine-tuned Mistral model significantly outperforms the other LLMs and human participants, demonstrating superior accuracy in generating CTL specifications. This study advances the field of formal verification by proposing a scalable solution to the NL-to-CTL translation challenge, setting a new benchmark for the integration of AI tools in complex specification tasks. © 2024 IEEE.

Pre-trained language models (PLMs) play a crucial role in various applications, including sensitive domains such as the hiring process. However, extensive research has unveiled that these models tend to replicate social biases present in their pre-training data, raising ethical concerns. In this study, we propose the TagDebias method, which proposes debiasing a dataset using type tags. It then proceeds to fine-tune PLMs on this debiased dataset. Experiments show that our proposed TagDebias model, when applied to a ranking task, exhibits significant improvements in bias scores. © 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.
