Optimizing auditory brainstem response detection through NSGA-II guided feature selection

Hearing-impaired people undergo auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing to assess their peripheral auditory nerve system. Audiologists apply diagnostic labels to ABR data using reference-based indicators such as peak latency, waveform shape, amplitude, and others. ABR test scoring errors may invalidate auditory nerve system integrity results. Machine learning, especially deep learning, may reduce human error in ABR analysis. This work offers a complete methodology to handle ABR analysis problems. First, extract ABR test images from PDF reports to create a dataset. The next step uses Elastic Distortion approach to create high-quality ABR images while conserving data. ResNet-50 deep learning extracts ABR image characteristics in the third phase. The fourth step finds the most relevant features using a trainable multi-objective non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II optimizer. Finally, ABR images are classified using machine learning algorithms. The proposed model achieved significant performance metrics: an accuracy of 99.46%, precision of 99.33%, specificity of 99.57%, sensitivity of 99.57%, F1-score of 99.43%, and a mean squared error of 0.0054 when using a support vector machine classifier with both augmented and original images. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of trainable feature selection and high-quality ABR images in improving ABR analysis accuracy. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

In Agile software delivery, complexity factors have become an important part that has been linked to the success of software projects, especially with highly structured plan-driven approaches. Although there are a range of known techniques, practices and structures aimed at improving communication, team, and organisational cohesion, there remains a poor understanding of how organisations and teams can effectively deal with complexity in Agile software delivery. While theoretical and management frameworks of complexity exist, nevertheless, little is known about the important complexity factors at play in the planning, design, and creation of Agile software at the various levels of organisational structures. To better understand complexity and how it may impact Agile delivery across organisational structures, processes and roles, a systematic literature review was undertaken to identify the known complexity factors, to identify gaps in our knowledge, and to identify the approaches that have been undertaken to date to address complexity. This review contributes a fresh perspective to the literature on complexity in Agile software delivery and forwards our conversation on complexity in IT projects, and their effective management. The review was structured around Remington and Pollack’s (2016) model identifying different types of complexity. The review’s findings indicate that complexities result from aspects in functional teams, organizational structures, roles, Agile tasks, and practice-related issues that were identified in distributed Agile projects. We conclude that there may remain a lack of understanding in practice of the complexity factors that are at play in an Agile software delivery context. These findings are relevant to researchers and practitioners seeking to identify areas of focus for addressing complexity in Agile software delivery. Copyright © 2023 Taniela Ramesh Stephen.

A new parallel file system and multi-core processor-based dynamic multimedia encryption method is presented in this study. Multimedia encryption efficiency and security were the main goals, addressing massive data sets and high-speed processing. We created a dynamic encryption algorithm for multimedia content, supported by a strong parallel file system and tuned for multi-core processing. Multiple tests showed significant improvements in encryption and decryption times, retaining short durations for real-time applications. After encryption, the system maintained multimedia content quality and accuracy with data integrity rates nearing 100%. Balanced CPU utilization showed efficient resource use and processor load management. The system's excellent throughput efficiency showed its capacity to process enormous amounts of data. These results indicate that parallel file systems and multi-core CPUs may solve multimedia encryption problems. Adaptable and scalable, the system supports many multimedia formats and sizes. This paper proposes a multimedia encryption system that improves performance data security and integrity, paving the way for safe multimedia processing advances. © 2024 IEEE.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease caused by several factors, including age, obesity, physical inactivity, inheritance, and unhealthy nutrition. Therefore, early stage detection of chronic diseases is of utmost importance for individuals. In this light, intelligent approaches are needed to predict the risk of diabetes mellitus. In this study, a new deep learning model was proposed to estimate the risk of diabetes disease. The performance of the new model was compared to the popular machine learning algorithms. In order to improve model performance, hyperparameter optimization was handled by the Grid Search algorithm. The proposed model achieved 98.71% accuracy, 98.74% precision, 98.71% recall, and 98.71% F1-score performance on the UCI diabetes data set. The proposed model outperformed compared machine learning models. © 2023 IEEE.

This study investigates the application of advanced fine-tuned Large Language Models (LLMs) for Turkish Sentiment Analysis (SA), focusing on e-commerce product reviews. Our research utilizes four open-source Turkish SA datasets: Turkish Sentiment Analysis version 1 (TRSAv1), Vitamins and Supplements Customer Review (VSCR), Turkish Sentiment Analysis Dataset (TSAD), and TR Customer Review (TRCR). While these datasets were initially labeled based on star ratings, we implemented a comprehensive relabeling process using state-of-the-art LLMs to enhance data quality. To ensure reliable annotations, we first conducted a comparative analysis of different LLMs using the Cohen’s Kappa agreement metric, which led to the selection of ChatGPT-4o-mini as the best-performing model for dataset annotation. Our methodology then focuses on evaluating the SA capabilities of leading instruction-tuned LLMs through a comparative analysis of zero-shot models and Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) fine-tuned LlaMA-3.2-1B-IT and Gemma-2-2B-IT models. Evaluations were conducted on both in-domain and out-domain test sets derived from the original star-ratings-based labels and the newly generated GPT labels. The results demonstrate that our fine-tuned models outperformed leading commercial LLMs by 6% in both in-domain and out-domain evaluations. Notably, models fine-tuned on GPT-generated labels achieved superior performance, with in-domain and out-domain F1-scores reaching 0.912 and 0.9184, respectively. These findings underscore the transformative potential of combining LLM relabeling with LoRA fine-tuning for optimizing SA, demonstrating robust performance across diverse datasets and domains. © 2013 IEEE.

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems are designed to convert spoken words into written text. These systems have the potential to greatly benefit individuals with speech impairments like dysarthria, improving their overall quality of life. However, there are significant challenges that researchers must address in order to develop an effective ASR system for atypical speech, specifically dysarthric speech. Among these challenges are the limited availability of dysarthric speech data and the need for an accurate interpretation model. In this study, we explored the development of dysarthric ASR systems, starting from traditional approaches that were specifically designed to recognize dysarthric speech. We then delve into deep-learning-based ASR systems and modern ASR engines that utilize transformers. Additionally, we highlighted the notable dysarthric speech collections and identified the key factors that impede the performance of dysarthric ASR systems. The findings indicate that although researchers have achieved gradual improvements in performance, further research is required to achieve practical performance levels. Likewise, it is important to establish guidelines and standards to accurately measure and benchmark the performance of dysarthric ASR systems in order to ensure their usefulness and effectiveness in real-world applications. © 2023 IEEE.

This research seeks to use parameter reduction optimization to improve the understanding of consumer behavior gained from Association Rule mining where the density of the data set is low. Low density occurs where small basket sizes are the norm, where very few and frequently only single items are purchased in each transaction and when there are large numbers of items being tracked across large numbers of transactions. The objective is to understand and optimize the aggregation levels that will provide consumer behavior insights of sufficient quality to the holders of relevant data sets. To achieve this goal, we analyze a publicly available dataset using a time-series Association Rule analysis for multiple time-period baskets contained in the dataset and at multiple item categorization levels with a view to optimizing the support levels of the output association rules. Purchases per consumer are viewed across days, weeks months and quarters to determine more suitable periods for analysis. The strength of the relationships is increased by also analyzing the data at the item category level where all items of a given category are correlated. We observe that increases to the support of the generated rules sets can be achieved, and that increase is dependent on the level at which the analysis is performed. ©2024 IEEE.

Security concerns have been one of the main hinderance for large-scale industrial internet-of-things (IoT) deployments. IoT is actively deployed in industrial sectors such as mining, power generation and transmissions, manufacturing, and transportation. Security breaches in any of these sectors would result in large-scale compromised infrastructure with potential losses far outweighing the benefits of cost-reduction enjoyed in IoT deployments. For these reasons, many levels of security checks must be included in IoT systems deployed in these sectors. Physical layer security solutions are amenable to delay-intolerant applications and are easier to implement than MAC-layer solutions. In this paper, we review promising approaches for Physical layer security solutions in IoT systems using radio frequency (RF) fingerprints from IoT devices. © 2024 IEEE.
