Broadcasting is one of the information dissemination primitives where a message is passed from one node (called originator) to all other nodes in the network. With the increasing interest in interconnection networks, an extensive amount of research was dedicated to broadcasting. Two main research goals of this area are finding inexpensive network structures that maintain efficient broadcasting and finding the broadcast time for well-known and widely used network *** the scope of this paper, we will mainly focus on determining the broadcast time and near-optimal broadcasting schemes in networks. Determination of the broadcast time of any node in an arbitrary network is known to be NP-hard. Polynomial time solutions are known only for a few network topologies. There also exist various heuristic and approximation algorithms for different network topologies. In this paper, we will present an efficient heuristic for the broadcast time problem in networks, where the nodes can be partitioned into two groups. © 2023 IEEE.

In the scope of this paper, we will mainly focus on determining the broadcast time and near-optimal broadcasting schemes in networks. Determination of the broadcast time of a node x in arbitrary network G is known to be NP-hard. Polynomial-time solutions are known only for a few network topologies. There also exist various heuristic and approximation algorithms for different network topologies. In this paper, we will consider a large subset of chordal networks. Motivated by the tremendous progress, we witnessed in recent years, this paper presents a survey of the scientific literature on the topic of Collaborative Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (C-SLAM), also known as multi-robot SLAM. With fleets of self-driving cars on the horizon and the rise of multi-robot systems in industrial applications, we believe that Collaborative SLAM will soon become a cornerstone of future robotic applications. In this survey, we introduce the basic concepts of C-SLAM and present a thorough literature review. We also outline the major challenges and limitations of C-SLAM in terms of robustness, communication, and resource management. We conclude by exploring the area's current trends and promising research avenues.

This research introduces a novel Probabilistic Graph Modeling-based Safety Classifier Algorithm designed for the purpose of classifying road safety in smart transportation systems. Leveraging a combination of numerical integration methods and Gaussian kernel density estimation models, the proposed algorithm offers an effective approach to assess and categorizing the safety levels of roads. The integration of these techniques enables a comprehensive analysis, allowing for a more nuanced understanding of the complex interactions within transportation networks. The algorithm's efficacy in road safety classification holds promising implications for enhancing traffic management and promoting safer urban environments. © 2024 The Authors. Performance microbenchmarking is essential for ensuring software quality by providing granular insights into code efficiency. While automated performance microbenchmark generation tools (e.g., ju2jmh) are proposed to alleviate practitioners from manually curating microbenchmarks, the high volume of generated benchmarks can lead to protracted benchmarking execution time, as many of the generated benchmarks are too short in nature to be valuable for evaluating performance. In this paper, we present a novel approach that optimizes microbenchmark execution through a batching strategy, i.e., grouping benchmarks with similar code coverage and treating them as a single unit to 1) reduce execution overhead and 2) reduce the bias from microbenchmarks that are too short. We evaluate the effectiveness of this enhancement across various Java projects, comparing the execution times of clustered and individual micro benchmarks. Our findings demonstrate substantial improvements in execution efficiency, reducing execution time by up to 89.81% while preserving high microbenchmark stability.

Architecture Analysis and Benchmarking of 3D U-shaped Deep Learning Models for Thoracic Anatomical Segmentation

Recent rising interests in patient-specific thoracic surgical planning and simulation require efficient and robust creation of digital anatomical models from automatic medical image segmentation algorithms. Deep learning (DL) is now state-of-the-art in various radiological tasks, and U-shaped DL models have particularly excelled in medical image segmentation since the inception of the 2D UNet. To date, many variants of U-shaped models have been proposed by the integration of different attention mechanisms and network configurations. Systematic benchmark studies which analyze the architecture of these models by leveraging the recent development of the multi-label databases, can provide valuable insights for clinical deployment and future model designs, but such studies are still rare. We conduct the first systematic benchmark study for variants of 3D U-shaped models (3DUNet, STUNet, AttentionUNet, SwinUNETR, FocalSegNet, and a novel 3D SwinUnet with four variants) with a focus on CT-based anatomical segmentation for thoracic surgery. Our study systematically examines the impact of different attention mechanisms, the number of resolution stages, and network configurations on segmentation accuracy and computational complexity. To allow cross-reference with other recent benchmarking studies, we also included a performance assessment of the BTCV abdominal structural segmentation. With the STUNet ranking at the top, our study demonstrated the value of CNN-based U-shaped models for the investigated tasks and the benefit of residual blocks in network configuration designs to boost segmentation performance. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

The latest breakthroughs in large language models (LLM) have empowered software development tools, such as ChatGPT, to aid developers in complex tasks. Developers use ChatGPT to write code, review code changes, and even debug their programs. In these interactions, ChatGPT often recommends code snippets that depend on external libraries. However, code from libraries changes over time, invalidating a once-correct code snippet and making it difficult to reuse recommended *** this study, we analyze DevGPT, a dataset of more than 4,000 Developer-ChatGPT interactions, to understand the role of library versions in code-related conversations. We quantify how often library version constraints are mentioned in code-related conversations and when ChatGPT recommends the installation of specific libraries. Our findings show that, albeit to constantly recommend and analyze code with external dependencies, library version constraints only appear in 9% of the conversations. In the majority of conversations, the version constraints are prompted by users (as opposed to being specified by ChatGPT) as a method for receiving better quality responses. Moreover, we study how library version constraints are used in the conversation through qualitative methods, identifying several potential problems that warrant further research.

Satisfiable data quality is the basic guarantee for data-based research, decision-making, and service. Today, new trends in the creation, collection, and utilization of data are constantly emerging. With the usage of massive data, the problem of data quality is highlighted. Several studies on the measurement, evaluation, and management of big data quality have been proposed, and the data quality problem in the big data environment has received attention. The big data characteristics Vs model describes the dimensions and attributes information of data sources in detail, which can be implemented in big data quality measurement. In this paper, a novel rigorous big data quality measurement architecture is proposed for automatically and parallelly quantifying the value of six big data Vs, which are Volume, Variety, Velocity, Veracity, Validity, and Vincularity according to the developed algorithms in every big data process step and time phase of the big data pipeline. Thresholds for the six big data Vs are provided correspondingly for analyzing the result values. The hierarchical measurement model is constructed with multiple-based measures, derived measures, and indicators. The model is verified by comparative experiments and experiments results indicate that the designed architecture can improve the outcomes of data source implementation. © 2022 IEEE.

Robustness of LiDAR-Based Pose Estimation: Evaluating and Improving Odometry and Localization Under Common Point Cloud Corruptions

Accurate and reliable pose estimation, i.e., determining the precise position and orientation of autonomous robots and vehicles, is critical for tasks like navigation and mapping. LiDAR is a widely used sensor for pose estimation, with odometry and localization being two primary tasks. LiDAR odometry estimates the relative motion between consecutive scans, while LiDAR localization aligns real-time scans with a pre-recorded map to obtain a global pose. Although they have different objectives and application scenarios, both rely on point cloud registration as the underlying technique and face shared challenges of data corruption caused by adverse conditions (e.g., rain). While state-of-the-art (SOTA) pose estimation systems achieved high accuracy on clean data, their robustness to corrupted data remains unclear. In this work, we propose a framework to systematically evaluate five SOTA LiDAR pose estimation systems across 18 synthetic real-world point cloud corruptions. Our experiments reveal that odometry systems degrade significantly under specific corruptions, with relative position errors increasing from 0.5% to more than 80%, while localization systems remain highly robust. We further demonstrate that denoising techniques can effectively mitigate the adverse effects of noise-induced corruptions, and re-training learning-based systems with corrupted data significantly enhances the robustness against various corruption types. © 2024, CC BY.

Hierarchical storage management in user space for neuroimaging applications

Neuroimaging open-data initiatives have led to increased availability of large scientific datasets. While these datasets are shifting the processing bottleneck from compute-intensive to data-intensive, current standardized analysis tools have yet to adopt strategies that mitigate the costs associated with large data transfers. A major challenge in adapting neuroimaging applications for data-intensive processing is that they must be entirely rewritten. To facilitate data management for standardized neuroimaging tools, we developed Sea, a library that intercepts and redirects application read and write calls to minimize data transfer time. In this paper, we investigate the performance of Sea on three preprocessing pipelines implemented using standard toolboxes (FSL, SPM and AFNI), using three neuroimaging datasets of different sizes (OpenNeuro’s ds001545, PREVENT-AD and the HCP dataset) on two high-performance computing clusters. Our results demonstrate that Sea provides large speedups (up to 32×) when the shared file system’s (e.g. Lustre) performance is deteriorated. When the shared file system is not overburdened by other users, performance is unaffected by Sea, suggesting that Sea’s overhead is minimal even in cases where its benefits are limited. Overall, Sea is beneficial, even when performance gain is minimal, as it can be used to limit the number of files created on parallel file systems. © 2024, CC BY.
