A new technique for manufacturing microelectrode arrays is described and assessed. This technique uses wire Electrical Discharge Machining (wire EDM) to form detailed array structures from a single sample of solid metal. Chemical etching can then be used to increase the electrode aspect ratios. Electrode lengths of 5 mm, widths of 40 μm, and spacings of 250 μm have been fabricated using this technique. Arrays of electrodes of varying lengths can also be fabricated. For intracortical recording applications, the signal paths are isolated from one another by securing an insulating substrate.

This paper deals with the problem of how to update a telecommunication network economically. A mixed-integer programming model that includes the update of the location and configuration (with respect to ports and multiplexers) of switches, the update of the access network, and the update of the backbone network is first proposed. Moreover, the use of multiplexers both in the access and in the backbone network is assumed. In order to find a solution, a starting heuristic, a tabu-based heuristic, and a post-optimization algorithm are proposed. Finally, a performance analysis of the proposed heuristics (using a lower bound) is presented.

A previous report identified several usability and learnability problems with integrated development environments (IDE) for Java. That report also cast these problems as examples of a conceptual gap between developer mental models and how programs are represented in IDEs. This present study extends the previous work through heuristic and psychometric assessment of problems reported by both experienced and inexperienced developers in their use of an IDE for C++. The results indicate that both groups identified similar kinds of ease-of-use problems, especially concerning program learnability and visibility (e.g., the usefulness of error and help messages). These findings are discussed in relation to other research results about developers' experiences with CASE tools and conceptual gaps between the tools and their users.

Porting an application on a hand-held device is likely to require a preliminary step of software miniaturization, plus the development of device drivers dedicated to the new environment and hardware architecture. This paper presents the process and lessons learned in re-factoring a large open source application to remove any excess, introduce shared libraries, remove circular dependencies among libraries and, more generally, to minimize inter-library dependencies. While the final goal was to fully exploit shared library capabilities, among the various possibilities we defined a process based on existing knowledge about the application, and aimed to minimize the maintenance effort required by miniaturization activities.

This paper presents a comparison of word length determination procedures. It is realized using an automated testbed that exploits a C/C++ fixed-point simulation utility to model the impact of finite word length on overall accuracy. Word length determination procedures find a combination of optimum bit resolutions by computing dissimilarities between fixed-point and floating-point simulation results. The comparison helps to select a procedure that minimizes these dissimilarities and finds an optimal combination of word lengths that meet user specified objectives, in a minimum number of iterations and hardware cost. This comparison was applied on various DSP algorithms.

Fabrication of a microelectrode array assembly for neural activity recording is described. The assembly forms the mechanical front-end of the telemetric electrode array system, a wireless intracortical recording device designed for motor cortex studies in nonhuman primates. The electrodes are manufactured by wire electrical discharge machining solid titanium. They are then secured in a polyimide substrate. A flexible printed circuit board connector cable connects the array structure to the electrical frontend. Parylene and platinum are used as the encapsulation materials. Results from the implantation of a prototype microelectrode array assembly are discussed.
