Aperture compensation technique is developed for achieving effectively strong coupling strength in the parallel-coupled microstrip line (PCML). This PCML is in this work characterized by an equivalent J-inverter network with the use of our SOC de-embedding technique self-contained in our fullwave MoM algorithm. Extracted parameters indicate that the coupling strength appears frequency-distributed and its maximum value rapidly rises up as the aperture becomes widened. Then, a pair of capacitively loaded line section is inserted between two identical PCML to formulate a new planar bandpass filter with multi-pole bandpass behavior. Our predicted and measured results show attractive properties of the proposed filter with BW=60%, |S/sub 11/|

Manual source code copy and modification is often used by programmers as an easy means for functionality reuse. Nevertheless, such practice produces duplicated pieces of code or clones whose consistent maintenance might be difficult to achieve. It also creates implicit links between classes sharing a functionality. Clones are therefore good candidates for system redesign. This paper presents a novel approach for computer-aided clone-based object-oriented system refactoring. The approach is based on an advanced clone analysis which focuses on the extraction of clone differences and their interpretation in terms of programming language entities. It also focuses on the study of contextual dependencies of cloned methods. The clone analysis has been applied to JDK 1.1.5, a large scale system of 150 KLOC.

This paper presents a class of hybrid integration techniques (HITs) of planar circuits and non-radiative dielectric (NRD) guide proposed for low-cost and high-performance millimeter-wave integrated circuits (ICs) and systems. Such platforms are in fact consistent with interconnect concepts of two dissimilar building blocks, which are developed on the basis of co-layered and multilayered arrangements of planar circuits and NRD-guide. Technical merits and design aspects of each integration scheme are discussed. Future research and development on this topic are also indicated with emphasis on a potential monolithic integration of the planar and non-planar geometries. © 2000 IEEE.

In this paper we introduce and describe the Multimedia Retrieval Markup Language (MRML). This XML-based markup language is the basis for an open communication protocol for content-based image retrieval systems (CBIRSs). MRML was initially designed as a means of separating CBIR engines from their user interfaces. It is, however, also extensible as the basis for standardised performance evaluation procedures. Such a tool is essential for the formulation and implementation of common benchmarks for CBIR. A common protocol can also bring new dynamics to the CBIR field - it makes the development of new systems faster and more efficient, and opens the door of the CBIR research field to other disciplines such as Human-computer Interaction. The MRML specifications, as well as the first MRML-compliant applications, are freely available and are introduced in this paper. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

The growing concerns regarding electric power quality and availability have led to the installation of more and more distributed generation. In parallel and in the context of an accelerating trend towards deregulation of the electric industry, the unbundling of services, many grouped under ancillary services, should create a market for some of these services. This paper discusses the potential of distributed generation (DG) to provide some of these services. In particular, DG can serve locally as the equivalent of a spinning reserve and voltage support of the AC bus. The main types of distributed generation with emphasis on the power electronic interface and the configurations appropriate to provide ancillary services are reviewed. The flexibility and features provided by the power electronic interface are illustrated. In addition to control of the real power, other functions can be incorporated into the design of the interface to provide services, such as reactive power, and resources associated with power quality. These include voltage sag compensation and harmonic filtering. The implications on the design of the power converter interface are discussed.

A new class of miniaturized multi-pole broadband microstrip bandpass filters is proposed and developed by using the parallel-coupled line with frequency-distributed coupling and a line resonator loaded with open-end stubs. The aim of the work is to verify the hypothesis which states that, "the use of dependency relations in the negotiation process will improve the balance between the need of the individual agents and the needs of the overall system". The application is an open virtual market place (L. Esmahi et al., 1999), where agents process their marketing transactions. We therefore present a generalized mediation model that provides support for a variety of transactions types, from simple buying and selling to complex multiagent contract negotiations. We also present a negotiation strategy (L. Esmahi et al., 1999), that takes advantage of the services of the market to construct beneficial contracts. Our market architecture is organized around three basic components: the market place and its manager, the customers (buyers/sellers), and the transaction sessions. We have shown in the experimental results, that the introduction of an explicit mediator can help resolve conflicts and add value to multiagent contracting, by allowing different types of contracts based on dependencies (L. Esmahi; J.C. Bernard et al., 1998).

The Nash arbitration scheme from cooperative game theory provides a natural framework to address the allocation of available bandwidth in network links which is network (Pareto) optimal and satisfies precise notions of fairness. In this paper we propose two distributed bandwidth allocation schemes that allocate available bandwidths to elastic sources according to the Nash arbitration scheme. We prove convergence to the desired allocations for both algorithms. Finally we show how such a scheme can be implemented in a real network.

We present in this paper a current mediated active pixel sensor (APS) with variable image size and resolution for power saving, electronic zooming, and data reduction at the sensor level. The circuit can perform averaging of output signals in blocks of adjacent pixels (kernels) of size 1/spl times/1, 2/spl times/2 and 4/spl times/4, allowing data reduction without aliasing effects. To achieve this, a current approach is used, thus enabling high speed operation and low power supply capacity. A novel fixed pattern noise (FPN) reduction scheme using a compact circuitry is presented. The circuit compensates for pixel transconductance mismatch in addition to offset error via analog to digital conversion reference current scaling. Hspice simulations using parameters of a 0.35 /spl mu/m CMOS process illustrate the advantage of the new technique over usual correlated double sampling (CDS) in current mode sensors. Parallel integrated analog to digital converters (ADC), a data line-buffer and digital control complete the circuit making data transmission easy and simplifying hardware needed for using the image sensor.

Microstrip line structure with backside aperture is developed for designing low-loss and high-impedance transmission line based multilayer integrated circuits. Applying a so-called "short-open calibration" (SOC) technique that is self-contained in our full-wave method of moments (MoM), we can formulate a unified equivalent CAD circuit model that is able to exhibit electrical properties of the proposed structure. We developed CAD model and structure are effectively used to design a multistage microstrip low-pass filter. Predicted filtering characteristics are well confirmed by our measurements.
