The paper concerns the problem of path tracking control in the class of vehicles made up of two units with an articulation between the two. Each unit has two fixed (nonsteerable) wheels. Steering action is, thus, performed by changing the angle between the front and rear units. Such a vehicle is used for transfer of ore inside the relatively narrow and restricted underground mine galleries. The articulation in the middle helps also for better capability in curve negotiation. In operation, this vehicle usually moves with a low speed because of the environment. As a result, a number of issues, such as dynamic stability and aerodynamic forces which are important to road vehicles, do not come into effect. Furthermore, as far as the path tracking automation is concerned, the dynamics of the vehicle and tire deformation have little effect and can be neglected. Analysis and formulation of the path tracking problem, thus, can be based on the kinematics only. In this paper the control problem is formulated and verified. The synthesis of a feedback system to govern the steering action, then, becomes possible.

We report a new measurement approach to recover temporally overlapping incident and reflected signals near a discontinuity using time-resolved electrooptic sampling. The technique involves measurement at two closely spaced locations and enables decomposition of the measured waveforms into components propagating toward and away from a discontinuity. Feedforward power amplifier linearizers using complete digital adaptive control algorithms are proposed. Two different versions, one using frequency domain cancellation and the other using a power gradient approach, are developed. Simulation results, showing carrier signal cancellation in the first loop and distortion cancellation in the second loop for both methods, are presented. This study demonstrates that digital adaptive implementation of feedforward linearization is indeed a promising approach.

The hardware implementation of the fuzzy ART neural network applied to a demanding real time radar signal clustering problem is investigated. To obtain efficient solutions for implementing this neural network with dedicated hardware, the network's algorithm is reformulated, and then a novel fuzzy ART system architecture is proposed. This system architecture is composed of a global comparator and several identical elementary modules (EMs), each one emulating a number of neurons. The general architecture of each EM consists of a local comparator, dividers, neural processors, and a block of memory.

A new low-cost test method for analog integrated circuits, called oscillation-test, is presented. During the test mode, the circuit under test (CUT) is converted to a circuit that oscillates. Faults in the CUT which cause a reasonable deviation of the oscillation frequency from its nominal value can be detected. Using this test method, no test vector is required to be applied. Therefore, the test vector generation problem is eliminated and the test time is very small because a limited number of oscillation frequencies is evaluated for each CUT. Due to its digital nature, the oscillation frequency can be easily interfaced to boundary scan. This characteristics imply that oscillation-test strategy is very attractive for wafer-probe testing as well as final production testing. In this paper, the validity of the proposed test method has been verified throughout some examples such as operational amplifiers and analog-to-digital converter (ADC).

When programmers perform maintenance tasks, program understanding is required. One of the first activities in understanding a software system is identifying its subsystems and their relations, i.e. its software architecture. Since a large part of the effort is spent in creating a mental model of the system under study, tools can help maintainers in managing the evolution of legacy systems, by showing them architectural information. An environment for the architectural analysis of software systems is described. The environment is based on a hierarchical architectural model that drives the application of a set of recognizers, each producing a different architectural view of the system or of some of its parts. Recognizers embody knowledge about architectural cliches and use flow analysis techniques to make their output more accurate.

This paper presents a new load-pull measurement system for transistor characterization under N tone excitation signal where N/spl ges/2. The new set up uses an arbitrary wave generator (AWG) to generate the spectrum of any N desired tones to be applied to the transistor and a microwave transition analyzer (MTA) as a receiver. With such system, constant output power contours and intermodulation rejection (IMR) contours in the /spl Gamma//sub L/(fo) plane can be obtained. Using such system, one can experimentally investigate intermodulation distortion in transistors as function of their loading and the number of tones.

Presents a new method integrated in Bell Canada's software acquisition process to assess software. This paper is focused on the assessment of the understandability of the inheritance graph of object-oriented software. The method is based on metrics and on the graphical illustration of the inheritance graph. A technique to decompose the inheritance graph of an object-oriented program into sub-graphs using metrics is described. Metrics are also used to identify complex sub-graphs. On the selected graphs, a technique to improve the understandability of the graphical illustration representing the inheritance graph is also described. This technique is based on extracting the main tree on the inheritance graph. A C++ case study containing 1080 classes is presented, on which this assessment method was applied.

This paper presents an integrated intelligent power system global controller. The developed system consists of three different knowledge bases. The tasks are voltage regulation, transmission line overload alleviation, and correction for steady state voltage stability. The base of the correction for the entire global controller is the analysis and use of the sensitivities of the power system variables to the existing VAr control tools. Results of tests conducted on a 6 bus test system and on a 118 bus IEEE test system have shown fast responses and effective corrective actions for the three paths.
