The applications of low rate convolutional codes in code division multiple access (CDMA) and high error rate channels is well known. Unfortunately. In searching for optimal long constraint length and very low rate codes the computational effort is prohibitive. In this paper. A method for generating quasi-optimum new very low rate (1/128/spl les/R/spl les/1/3) and moderately long constraint length (K/spl les/14) codes is presented. These codes have the interesting characteristics of being rate compatible and easy to generate. The codes presented in this paper provide superior performances to the known low rate codes of the same rates and constraint lengths.< >

A test approach and circuitry suitable for built-in self-test (BIST) of medium to high-resolution digital-to-analog (D/A) converter are described. Offset, gain, linearity and differential linearity errors are tested without using mixed-mode or logic test equipment. The proposed BIST structure presents a compromise between test cost, area overhead and test time. The BIST circuitry has been designed using CMOS 1.2 /spl mu/m technology. The simulations performed show that the BIST is applicable for testing D/A converters up to 16-bits resolution. By a minor modification the test structure would be able to localize the fail situation and to test all D/A converters on the chip.< >

Based on special pipelining techniques, a new methodology for increasing the clock frequency and communication speed in monolithic-WSI systems is proposed. Spice simulations show that the clock frequency on wafer scale systems implemented using a 1.2 micron CMOS technology can be operated well above 140 MHz, which is approximatively five times the maximum frequency of current systems. It is also shown that pipelining principles can be applied to communication links. That particular strategy allows to speedup communication transfers on 5 cm interconnection wires, such as those running across a wafer, by a factor between two and ten, as compared to the case in which no pipelining is used.< >

Laparoscopic surgery is a new type of approach involving the use of a laparoscopic camera and special instruments which are inserted into the abdominal cavity through the abdominal wall. Over the last five years, a variety of complex abdominal surgical interventions have been developed and are now performed according to the minimally invasive surgery principle. In this article, a surgical procedure for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) is presented that involves a robotic assistant. The robot manipulates the laparoscope and provides the video image as it moves into the abdominal cavity. The robot acts as a cameraman and replaces the surgical assistant. The concept of a robotic assistant is presented and the various modifications made to the robot are described. A motion control strategy permits easy teleoperation of the robot. Surgical interventions have been successfully performed, first on animals and then on 8 patients.< >

This paper describes a system dedicated to online handwritten sentence recognition. The prototype is made up of two basic processors. The first controls the data acquisition, pentip trace segmentation, letter identification. The second aims at identifying and correcting the words candidates by integrating syntactic and lexical information. Sentences are parsed to list the grammatical classes of each incorrect candidates then lexical query searches for words in a lexicon according to grammatical classes. A final decision is made using a string comparison algorithm. Tests of the complete system are reported at the end for a typical writer-dependent application.

A six-port-based multiharmonic load-pull setup is used to characterize a medium-power MESFET transistor for the design of microwave amplifiers. Complete load-pull measurements at the fundamental (1.7 GHz) and the second harmonic (3.4 GHz) are obtained for two bias points in class A and AB operation. It is shown that the power gain and the power added efficiency can vary up 0.6 dB and 6%, respectively, as the phase of the second harmonic load is changed. (C) 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
