A systematic scaling approach for the modeling of high-power/large-size HBTs is presented. The measured S-parameters of a three elementary-cell HBT are compared to those obtained with the scaled model and the commonly used lumped equivalent circuit model. It is shown that a better fit to the measured S parameters is obtained when the scaled model is used. The interconnections and parasitics between elementary cells are accounted for based on the actual footprint of the device.< >

Recently, an image matching theory has been developed in which the windowed Fourier phase (WFP) is introduced as the primary primitive for stereo matching as well as motion matching. Although the WFP has several desirable properties, its use raises a fundamental question about its completeness in representing signals: to what degree are signals determined by their WFP? In this paper, it is established that a signal, either continuous or discrete, is determined tip to a multiplicative constant by its WFP at any frequency. This result indicates that the WFP contains richer information than zero crossings and peaks. It also provides insight into why WFP-based image matching may achieve highly accurate and stable results. To experimentally demonstrate the completeness of the WFP, an algorithm is developed to reconstruct signals from the WFP.

A calibration and measurement method of a wideband tri-six-port network analyzer (TSPNA) is proposed. The scattering parameters of a three-port device under test are found to be the unknowns of a set of nine simultaneous complex linear equations. These equations are established via a group of three calibrated linearly independent excitations. No isolators are required for calibration and measurement procedures, Three unknown reciprocal two-port standards are needed for the calibration of the TSPNA. The proposed method is rigorous, explicit, and suitable for wideband on-wafer three-port device S-parameter measurements. It can easily be adapted for heterodyne automated network analyzers equipped with three reflection test-set units.

A novel, nonconventional family of power converters for low-voltage high-current applications based on a peculiar series connection of the primary windings is presented. On the secondary side, all the semiconductors are directly connected in parallel without resorting to the use of interphase transformers or any other current sharing means. The series connection of the primaries ensures current sharing while the zigzag arrangement provides the desired pulse number. Several prototypes were assembled to verify the validity of the theoretical analysis. All the results confirmed the analysis.< >

A method for characterizing printed circuit boards as sources of radiated emissions is proposed. The method uses probe measurements made in the very close vicinity of the device under test (DUT). These measurements can be processed to determine the emission level at any distance from the DUT. Due to its near-field nature, this technique does not require anechoic electromagnetic-compatibility (EMC) rooms or open area test sites, which makes it very attractive from an economical point of view. The key point of the characterization is the expansion of the current distribution on the circuit board into a set of filamentary current basis functions. The interaction between the basis functions and the near-field probe is calculated with the method of moments. Accurate field predictions were obtained for planar structures having a 1.25-mm wire spacing.< >

A new Markov chain approach to the evaluation of the frame error probability for the M-Algorithm is presented. Using this model results for values of M=1 to 64 and frame length of L=64 to 512 bits have been evaluated for a convolutional code of memory length v=19 and rate R=1/2. Simulation results are compared to the Markovian model showing that the technique is attractive for the performance evaluation of suboptimal decoding algorithms for convolutional codes.

A suboptimal breadth-first multiple-path bidirectional decoding algorithm for convolutional codes has been shown to provide very attractive error performances over the binary symmetric channel. In this paper, new computer simulation results for bidirectional decoding of convolutional codes over soft-decision Rayleigh fading channels are presented. Using a memory length v = 19 and rate R = 1/2 code, these results show that a gain near 5 dB can be achieved for a low frame error probability (P/sub f/ < 10/sup -3/) over the Viterbi algorithm of equivalent decoding complexity (v = 6, R = 1/2). The results also indicate that, depending on the length of the frames, a significant gain can also be achieved for low bit error probability (P/sub b/ < 10/sup -5/).
